I need to vent about my city and the school system

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2006: I need to vent about my city and the school system
By Tonya on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 10:20 pm:

Timmy is a the same elementary school that I went to and my parents went to it. Now our city that sucks has managed money really badly and Timmy has to go to a new school next year. He has ADHD and is not great with change. So this year he finishes where he is next year he goes on a long bus ride to a new school with kids from his school and then kids from the other school. Then for the 2008-2009 if we are lucky we will be moved into a country type smaller town area where the schools will be way better for my kids.

I am angry that the city I was raised in and live in now has gone down hill so fast. Their motto here is a great town for a great family. They are building homes all over the place but keep forgetting about the families they have here now. ARGH!!!

The obvious things are so far out of their site it is crazy. I just want to scream.

Thanks for letting me vent ladies I appreciate it.

I totally understand your frustrations!! The public school system where I am at is not any better than yours. Our home was moved out of one middle school district and moved into another that is farther away than the original one. Almost 80% the kids in my kids elementary school will attend the school that is closer to our home and only the other 25% will attend the school farther away. It workes out that all of the girls that my dd plays sports with and has friendships with are in the 80% going to the closer school.

I just don't understand the reasoning behind what the heck they are doing.

They are closing 2 elementary school and moving those kids to other schools. Then changing the boundries for the other elementary schools in the city. Taking 1 of the 3 junior highs and turning into in a 6th grade school only. So we will have 7schools K-5th grade, then 1 school with all of the entire cities 6th graders then 2 schools with the 7-8 graders then 2 large schools with 9-12th graders. And the 6th graders for then that will be a transition year so no sports or clubs or events or cheerleading nothing!!

Tell me how any of this makes sense to you. But they are having so many issues with out schools systems and kids having class in portable rooms (trailers) outside of schools cause there is not enough room in the schools they are going to close 2 schools. But yet they have open enrollment for kids from everywhere else to come to our city to attend school.

Dam@ how stupid is our board of education directors. Plus they are building our city adding tons of new housing communities everywhere inviting families to bring their kids in. What about the families that are already here shouldn't they be trying to help us before bringing in more issues.

I am so mad for my son that he is going to have to go through this circus. Man if we didn't already have a goal to move in 18 months that would sure be the goal now!!!

I want a smaller city with smaller class count and smaller amounts of students in districts.

So, how do the do band? Or don't they?

We are so lucky that the city and school board are very supportive of the music program. We have about 10,000 kids in our school system. How many does yours have?

I know Milwaukee has lots of problems, but they have about 10 times the kids we have, at about 900,000 or so, in a recent year.

They said 6th grade will not get anything. Now again they just voted yesterday to close these 2 schools and make these changes so they have the rest of the year to change everything again. But I just know that this is going to push allot more kids out of this district including ours. We will go with 1 more year only because we cannot move yet but this has sealed the deal.

So, they get a year of band in 5th grade and then nothing for 6th grade? Good grief!

Tonya I would swear that we live in the same city. The very same things that are happening where you live are happening here. I have had many heated discussions with the board. I'm sure I am on their "naughty" list. It is so bad that I have looked into private school...probably not an option for us with 5 kids.

I feel your pain it is almost as if they put all the schools in one hat and all the neighborhoods into another and pull a name from each hat and that is how you are assigned a school. We too have an issue with out of district kids attending our school (called option students here). This is why many of our schools are overcrowded. Last year they attempted to stop all option enrollments but they were working 5 days a week to hear all the appeals that they decided to scrap it. So those of us who do live in the district have to drive our kids to schools farther away from our homes or when bussing is offered the kids will sit on the bus for 1 hour EACH way.

Tonya, could you email me, where you live? I would like to read more about it.

I still can't believe that they would make kids go a whole school year, without any extracirricular activities.

Dawn I live in Taylor, MI Right now there is not too much to read about it. Everything I know is from going to the board meetings and talking to other parents who have been to meetings I have missed. Plus the principal at our school has been telling us as well things she is told in her meetings.

Other than telling us what schools closed and what the restucture plan is we are not suppose to know anything. They have not released the issues about school activities and bus schedules and stop issues yet.

I figure we will start hearing about all of that in February or so.

I found this article, but you're right, it doesn't say that much.

Sheboygan has a school district of about 10,000 students, too. I think we are keeping them filled, for the most part.

Last year: Predicted was 10,227 and they got 10,180.

For this year: Predicted was 10,132 and actual was 10,152.

This issue for you, is making me appreciate where we live.
