Why give catnip to a cat?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2006: Why give catnip to a cat?
By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - 05:06 pm:

I have never on purpose given catnip to my previous cats. But I was reading the other day about a good start for your new kitten and it said to provide catnip treat or catnip toys or sow some catnip in a sturdy plantar for them. Why?

From what I've read, it's kind of like giving your kid L*S*D, which I wouldn't do. So why do I give it to my cat?

A lot of people use it as a training device - rubbing it on a scratching post etc. I would not plant it in a planter, I did that once and the cats destroyed the plant.

I give it as an occasional treat, just for the sheer fun of watching my cat wack out! :)
Not kittens, though.
