Hurricane Ernesto

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Hurricane Ernesto
By Karen~admin on Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 08:21 am:

I know everyone on this board from TX to FL is so sick of worrying about hurricanes right about now.

This morning it looks like FL is more in danger of being hit. However, yesterday when LA was in the cone, DH made reservations for us in Birmingham (the closest place we could find a room ALREADY!) *just in case*. Last year for Katrina, he was working in Pensacola when Katrina was in the Gulf. He came home on Saturday thinking he was leaving the danger zone. Little did he know we would be leaving in less than 24 hours to escape it.

Tomorrow he is leaving for Birmingham for the company's Halloween meeting, and is due to be back on Wednesday. This feels like deja vu. LOL

So, all you moms who could be in the path of this one, what are your plans? Are you leaving, and where are you headed??

Karen, I will be praying for and thinking of you and all of the people in the New Orleans area and other areas that may be in the path of this hurricane. I've just been reading that the levees are still not safe, and saw something on TV last night that most of the pumps - that are supposed to pull water out of New Orleans areas if the canals have to be closed - are not working or are likely to break down. Sheesh - they've had a year to work on this. You'd think they'd have gotten it right by now.

{{{Karen}}} I will be thinking of you. I sure hope you don't have to go through anything like Katrina, ever again. Now, it looks like it is going straight towards my grandparents!

Don't get me wrong, this isn't *about me*. LOL It looks like FL is going to be the target (this morning, anyway - that could change), I'm just wondering what everyone else is going to do.

DD Jen is living in a 5th wheel right now, and she's really concerned about all her stuff - everything she owns is in it, plus they have 3 dogs - kinda big dogs. LOL

If it hits FL, Kim, Annie and others are going to have to evac.

Oh Karen, I know what you are saying. You don't want it to hit you, but then you don't want it to hit anyone else. {{{hugs}}}

Karen, my Mom is alerady packed and looking for reservations too. Pretty sad that you have to do it a week in advance before you even know where its going? But my Mom is a worry freak too. That cone could change 5 times in the next five days. I don't sweat it anymore. If we have to leave I will pack Thursday night. All I take are clothes and kids anyway. The kids however are another story.....We've pretty much lost everything protecting us because of Ivan and Dennis. Its all cleared out. One child thinks she would stay here....I have news for her....

Just what we all need right now.

The bad thing is I would have to stay longer than normal to help secure the property that I work at. But I am not going to sweat that either.

Everyone in Ernesto's path will be in my thoughts and prayers!

Not too concerned right now. We've always stuck it out and would probably do the same. It couldn't get much worse than Ivan for us. Knock on wood!

Yikes! I will be keeping my eye on that one! I was already worried for my co-worker's daughter, who is going to med school in Dominica, along with another co-worker's son. They are on one of the islands that are just southeast of Puerto Rico, but Ernesto is already past that point.

A third co-worker's daughter lives in Pensacola, FL. She moved down there, just days, before Ivan hit!

Will keep all of you in my prayers!

Just heard it's been downgraded back to a tropical storm. Knock wood! Looks like Louisiana is in the clear now. Hopefully this thing won't strengthen too much in the next couple of days and FL will not get slammed.

It is interesting how a year can change things! Hubby's company was meeting on sat to make a plan just in case. We were already talking about evac plans for us. It does look like it has turned towards fl, so all our thought was for not this time. Just out of curiosity, our evac was a nightmare, is florida this way too? Are the towns just smaller, or do more people just not evac? Really until last year I don't even remember really thinking about hurricanes, I mean we would take notice, but nothing serious.

Also on a side note...part of the 7th grade ss curriculum is tracking hurricanes :)
