I scheduled a Dream Dinner session!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: I scheduled a Dream Dinner session!
By Truestori on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 11:01 am:

It took me a year to justify this Dream Dinner thing in my mind. LOL

But after going over how much we spend going out to dinner, I figured we would give it a try. I am bringing my daughter, who absolutely LOVES to cook, so it serves as a great bonding experience! This summer I have truly only cooked a handful of times(blushing), so before school I figured I would get back in the swing of things. :)

By Colette on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 11:21 am:

What is it? A cooking class?

By Truestori on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 01:34 pm:

Colette,

Its where you go and prepare meals to freeze for the whole month. They have everything on hand that you need. Its all cut and ready to assemble.
(Ok, just typing that makes me feel lazy..LOL)

By Colette on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 01:45 pm:

I've never heard of it. Sounds neat!

By Tonya on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 01:53 pm:

What does it cost?

By Kaye on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 01:53 pm:

We have several popping up here too...

one called dinner thyme
and dinner creations

I feel the same way, like I should pony up and do this. It is a little expensive, but we really eat out way too much.

By Truestori on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 02:06 pm:

Tonya,

It is pricey. Usually between $17-$25 per meal, but it does feed up to six people pretty well.

Kaye,
I recently started working 2 jobs and I think in the long run the stress it will save will be worth it. Still expensive but worth it. This is truly going to be a luxury for our family.

I don't recall whom it was, but we had a mom here on the board that was thinking of doing this as a business of her own at one time. I never heard if she went through with it or not.

Does anyone else recall this conversation?

By Breann on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 02:25 pm:

How fun! When do you go? You'll have to let us know how it turns out.

I wish we had one here. We eat dinner out several times a week at about $40 a pop.

By Tarable on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 02:50 pm:

My sister did this when she was pregnant with her youngest son (she has 3 boys) and told me that it was wonderful but since hers are all pretty young (or were then) that she could split the meals in half and that would feed her family for a meal. I think I am going to try this because School and everything is getting crazy and we are eating out a lot more than I want to, that is if I can find stuff my picky kid will eat there.

By Paulas on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 03:49 pm:

Do you have a link or something where we can check it out?

By Reds9298 on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:14 pm:

I think Andi was a part of this kind of thing a while back. I haven't heard of anyone doing it around here though. Sounds interesting.

By Bellajoe on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:14 pm:

I think we have something like that around here. It's new and I have heard ads for it on the radio. This one is called "my girlfriend's kitchen"

sounds like fun!

By Bellajoe on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:17 pm:

https://secure.mygirlfriendskitchen.com/

this is the one we have in our area

By Melanie on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:39 pm:

We have one called Fresh Prep Kitchen near us and I have heard great things about it. I am intending to try it once these kids are in school.

By Andi on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:39 pm:

I do something similar to that and I love it. I am going to do it again the second week of September.

It's 7 meals that feed 6 people for $113. It's all packaged and ready for my freezer when I get home.

I love it!

By Tarable on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 04:42 pm:

there are 2 around here...

dinnerstation.com

and

supersuppers.com

My sister likes dinner station better because they have more stuff her boys will eat, but she said the other one has good food too.

I don't know how to make links yet.

I have done Dream Dinners several times and love the convenience. It's alot of fun if you can get some friends to go together and make it a girls night. We usually have 7-8 of us that go together. They do allow you to split the meals. Most of what we have tried we like, there have been one or two that have been just OK but certainly edible. I thought that $17-$20 was reasonable. Most of the chicken meals come with 6 chicken breast and the pork chops also with 6. I think that most of the meals are worth it. I don't do meals like the meatball hoagies or calzones because they are fairly inexpensive and easy to do at home. But the chicken, pork and other roasts and such are wirth it. Good Luck and have fun!

By My2girlygirls on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 06:30 pm:

that would be "worth " it......

By Yjja123 on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 08:26 pm:

I love the idea of it but we try to cook strictly heart healthy meals. I may try to cook more and freeze meals for those days when the day slips away on me. Lately we seem to have to scramble for meals on Thursday because Jessica has 3 dance classes. It messes up my schedule. The basis of this is that you freeze the meals right?

By Truestori on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 09:48 pm:

The meals seem pretty healthy. I checked the fat content etc. and its really pretty low. I am making 12 meals so I will probably freeze 10 and keep two meals out. The idea is you can add different ingredients to your liking, so say you hate mushrooms or onions just elimanate them at the time you prepare the dish. I'm excited to see if the meals I picked my kids like also. They tend to eat everything except fish so I am pretty fortunate! I will let everyone know how it goes. :)

We have a Main Dish Kitchen around by us and some of my co-workers are just RAVING about it.

Plus, you can make meals for someone else, so they have been making meals, for the co-worker who is home with her husband, recovering from a bad car accident AND open-heart surgery.

Which reminds me, I should make her some food. Maybe next week, when I have off.
