Painting rooms color

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Painting rooms color
By Tonya on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 10:18 am:

I am tired of white walls. We are getting ready to gut the kitchen / dining room from the middle down all counters and cabinets on the floor plus all wall paper and paneling. We are going to paint and put in new floor cabinets and counters.

Plus the utility room is right next to the kitchen and dining room so do I paint it the same as the other 2 rooms but only use 1 shade or could I use a 3rd shade of green for that room.

I want to do 2 shades of green. 2 walls 1 shade and 2 walls a different shade. What do you ladies think?

Plus then we are doing our room. I want to do 2 pastel colors. Like light purple and yellow or light blue and yellow.

Help ladies I need ideas.

Your best bet is to use colors in the same family. You can use colors like yellow, blue, etc but make sure they are the same tone. When you look at paint samples you can usually tell by the location on the swatch if they are the same tone (example 3rd down on blue and 3rd down on yellow should be in same family). My house (with exception of kids rooms) has browns, reds, and yellows, with some black & white. It works because the colors are all in the same family. If your utility room is completely seperate from all rooms you can paint in any color. I like the flow of one room to another so I tend to choose colors that work together. Hope this all makes sense. have fun painting! I LOVE to paint!

you can use their site to paint rooms with a view into other rooms so you can see what it would all look like together.

The 2 walls one color, 2 another is completely your decision. I do not like that look because it breaks up your room too much. Better to have one accent wall or keep then all the same. Visually it gives a bigger looking room.

Yvonne has great ideas, as usual! :)

My friend has a pale yellow/ light blue bedroom and it seems very soothing.

Thanks Yvonne. I decided we are going to do the kitchen, dining room and utility room all in the same 2 green tones. The kitchen and dining room are connected the 2 small walls will be the darker green and the 2 bigger walls will be the lighter green. The the utility room will be the darker also.

And we are going to do the light blue and yellow in our room. Rich said no purple please so I am going to give him that much since it is him room too.

We are going to be painting our house, and we ordered a CD from Benjamin Moore that will allow us to scan a photo into the computer and then virtually paint it. It'll also work for other rooms, not just the outside. Maybe it'll settle our indecision and let us move forward with the project! :)
