College instructor vent

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: College instructor vent
By Anonymous on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 01:38 am:

I havent been on the board for some time, because my user name is easily searchable and it has been made known to me that people at my college have figured out who I am. I am entering nursing school and can not afford to have my own opinion come back to haunt me.

So what is my problem? My instructors. I have muscled through so many classes that I normally would have filled a grievance against. I had a teacher that I feel was actually a sexual preditor. I ended up enrolling for that class in another county and have been commuting to one college 60+ miles from my home, going home and then commuting another 40+ miles in a completely different direction to another college to avoid him. I have to take another class from him in the fall because there is no wiggle room in time for making sure I do my clinicals and such and avoid this turkey. There is no other instructor for this class. I had an instructor teaching anatomy and physiology tell the class that you can do dialysis through your skin by sitting in a tub full of water and baking soda. I had another instructor state that the proper way to get rid of people in prison who have no chance of parole is to leave pills or a rope in their cell and hope that they do the right thing. I just finished a class that I started in June and I have not gotten ONE grade back, and I cant say anything because the class was on ethics and he could just decide that my work wasnt up to par and I wouldn't have anything to stand on, sure I could file a greivance but I cant afford to stick my neck out. I have to get above a C to make sure that my acceptance to the program isnt revoked. I cannot tell you how many times that I have been just so emotionally upset by creapy/stupid/ignorant/intollerant/ fill in the blank instructors.

I just figured out that I have to come up with almost $2000 for books this term. Apparently the instructors needed the flexability to decide when they were going to teach what, so instead of having us purchase texts as needed throughout the year they all needed to be picked up now. Of course they want the online access to the publishers as an option so I cant even buy them used.

I had to do a criminal background check, which I dont object to, but they used an online service that identifies almost ALL of my SS # to anybody that looks, and then added on more fees because I had a different last name 20 years ago and another charge because somewhere somebody still thinks I live with my mom, I have been away from home since the 1980's

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

Thanks for letting me vent, I think I am getting really burned out. I know some of you are going to be saying why are you getting into nursing if you cant deal with people. I can deal with people, I am approaching 40 and I never have met such weird and freaky people as the individuals that are supposed to be teaching, and mostly young and impressionable kids to boot. I can say you are full of bologna but I worry that these kids dont have enough experience to know the difference. And I hate paying them because I feel like I am getting it right in the rear end.

I am going to go get a new user name, I miss chatting with you all.

Wow, I'm sorry you are in such a strange and uncomfortable situation. I really think you should file complaints if the instructors are that out of line. These people are teaching students to provide medical care, that's a serious thing to be giving misinformation about. You are absolutely right about the younger students, which makes it even more important for you tospeak out. I know that I feel that way with certain things we deal with in the military, like if I don't speak out, or reach out to the younger, less experienced wives, it's neglectful on my part. If someone is trying to screw me, but I know better, I can't just ignore it, because they could pull the same thing with a PVTs spouse, and that spouse might not know how to handle it. (((((Anon))))) Keep us updated!

Can you change colleges or do it online?

Are you positive they are an accredited institution.

Sounds strange to me.

Hmm I am curious which school you are at. I live very close to a very good nursing program and the stuff you mention is just bizarre and not at all like the experiences I have heard from friends.
