Anyone have an electric scooter?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Anyone have an electric scooter?
By Breann on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:00 pm:

My DD (7) has been asking for one for a year now. Several kids in the neighborhood have them. We are considering getting her one for Christmas. Does anyone here have one? Any reviews/suggestions?

I think we would like to get her one that has a seat on it, not just the stand up kind. There is one made by schwinn that we are looking at.

This is the one we are thinking about:

It says ages 12 and up. :( Are there any for younger kids? The kids in the neighborhood here are definitely not 12 and up.

To me 15 mph seems pretty fast for a 7 year old. My dad got my son one (the one you stand on) for christmas 2 years ago. He was 7 then and it was way to fast for him. He is just now starting to be able to really use it. Has she tried one before? Was she able to handle the speed?

By Breann on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:58 pm:

Yeah, she rides with all the neighbor kids. She has driven one before, but didn't go full speed on it.

That is good to know about your DS though. Thanks :)

I think the twelve and up thing is because they need the ability to steer, control, and balance the scooter. So you'll have to go from there on the age limit thing.

Have you checked the scooter laws for your area? I thought they were cool, but the age thing, 12 and up, scared me off. My son is 11. There are no little kids in our area using them at all. The neighboring city forbids them on streets and sidewalks.

By Breann on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 02:21 pm:

As far as I know, there are no laws prohibiting them. We live in a small area and it's common for kids to be out riding around the streets on scooters, atv's, dirt bikes, etc.

Several dks in our neighborhood have electric scooters. However, they are older....I know my neighbor got one for her 12th birthday. So, I would say that most of them are around 12. My ds is 8 and I think I would be concerned with his ability to control one.

My DD has one she bought with her own money.. Well my mom went in 1/2 on it. And she loves it. She is 11 and still doesn't go full speed because our sidewalks are very bumpy. I think her's is a schwinn and it has a removable seat. She has had ti for about 2 years. Just make sure she can handle the one you are getting.. ask your neighbors what kinds their kids have that she has been riding. I know the boys across the street have razor ones and they are a litle smaller and easier to handle than the one DD has. Good luck and you know your DD best, if you think she can handle it I am sure you are right.

Our friend's ds received one for his birthday this month. He's 10yo and very athletic and used to these types of toys (has his own go-cart and mini-bike) but he's had some trouble with the scooter. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable allowing a 7yo to ride one but if she's ridden the neighbor's and done well, it has to be up to your own judgement.

I told my son that he is not to have one until he is 13. He needs to be mature enough to understand the responsibility that goes with it. I insist on a helmet and knee and elbow pads, etc, when he is on his skates, and he doesn't like them and often resists. I am amazed that there are absolutely NO other kids in my neighborhood that wear helmets on bikes or skates.

But as has been said, you need to use your own judgement. I am dealing with a boy, and you with a girl. Good luck!
