Disneyworld question?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Disneyworld question?
By Mrsheidi on Monday, August 14, 2006 - 09:05 pm:

I'm going to an army family readiness group convention and we are able to go to Disneyworld on Saturday night, after 4pm.

Since I won't spend too much time there, what attractions are the best? (Keep in mind I'll be with other adults only.) :)

Are there any nightclubs that aren't seedy? I'll be staying at the Hilton Disneyworld Hotel.

How fun Heidi! Can I come along? :-) I'm so glad you are having a weekend away. I hope you have a great time!

Sorry no recommendations, as I haven't been to Disneyworld yet. I'm sure someone will.

Have a really fun weekend!

(Just wondering, what is an "army family readiness group convention"?)

There are 4 parks in Disney World (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Studios and Animal Kingdom) and Downtown Disney (shops, restaurants, and clubs at Pleasure Island). Each park requires a separate admission ticket and I believe the clubs at Pleasure Island require a cover charge (not sure since I've never visited them).

Do you want to ride the attractions? Magic Kingdom has the most rides, but the Studios and Epcot have some of the newer and most talked about rides. The newest attraction is at Animal Kingdom, but it may be too late in the day for you to see that park.

If I had one day at Disney World, I'd probably visit Epcot, but then again, I could never do just one day! :)

Visit AllEarsNet for info and DisBoards or Passporter forums if you'd like to ask the opinions of really avid and knowledgeable Disney fans.

If you tell us what you're looking for or what appeals to you, we can help better.

Magic Kingdom has Space Mountain--roller coaster in the dark

Splash Mountain--log flume ride going thru scenes of Song of the South (very cute, several small drops, then one large drop at the end, then you still go back thru the scenery and you get WET)

Big Thunder Mountain RR--roller coaster thru a mining mountain (NOISY!!)

Pirates of the Caribbean--newly updated to include the new movie people--boat ride thru a pirate community

MK also has Cinderella's Castle and children's rides, including the famous Small World and Peter Pan and Pooh. It also has other attractions too numerous to mention.

At the end is Spectromagic, the electric light parade, and then Wishes, the fireworks.

Epcot has two parts, Future World and World Showcase. Future World has Test Track where you 'test' a car in adverse conditions, speeding, going thru hot zones, cold zones, hairpin turns, etc. They also have Soarin' where you 'ride' over the California landscape. It's a SHORT ride, and you never move, you just dangle while a large screen movie plays before you and you feel like you're flying. Mission Space is a controversial ride (several people have died on it) which now has TWO versions, a tame one and the original one. In each version you are in a space capsule and you are simulated on a trip to space. The original version has you spinning a lot, altho you're not supposed to feel like you're spinning...you're supposed to feel pressure from take off and the atmosphere and such. On the tame version you don't spin, you shake. Beyond those three headliners, there are various smaller attractions including cool ones about energy and dinosaurs, and hydroponics and food growing. You can also go in a communications ride in the 'big ball' of Epcot.

In World Showcase you can walk around and visit several countries including the UK, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, American, Norway....can't recall them all. I find it boring but you can shop for 'authentic merchandise' and have 'authentic food'. Illuminations is the big fireworks display at the end.

Studios has Tower of Terror where you go thru a heavily themed hotel of the 1930s and go up an elevator that goes into the Twilight Zone and you are dropped several stories, over and over again.

Rockin' Rollercoaster is a wild roller coaster to the tunes of Aerosmith?? I think that's the band...not sure. It's in the dark, I think, with Hollywood icons and such all lit up.

Great Movie Ride takes you thru some famous movie scenes and shows you how some special effects are done. I can't recall any other major stuff...there are lots of shows, like Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, Beauty and the Beast, etc., but I don't know how late those performances run. At the end is Fantasmic, a big performance of fireworks and music and characters. It's quite spectacular, but you need to get good seats ahead of time.

Animal Kingdom has a new roller coaster, Expedition Everest that is supposed to be very cool. It also has Kiliminjaro Safaris where you ride a safari thru the African jungle. I hate Animal Kingdom and find it hot and boring and think it's a glorified zoo. As someone else pointed out, you'll be too late for AK anyway as they close at five o'clock.

If you have specific questions, ask away!

Pleasure Island is part of Disneyworld, and has several clubs. You pay one fee(I think it is $21.00) and you get access to all of them.

Also, for one night, I would either go to Magic Kingdom, or Epcot. Epcot doesn't have a lot of rides, but I love walking around the countries. And, the food is great there. Magic Kingdom has great classic rides like Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Mansion, and Space Mountain, to name a few. I would go to one of the Disney websites and see what each park has, and then decide what you are most interested in doing.

I think that if i had one night to spend in DisneyWorld without kids, i would probably go to Epcot. It has a cool new ride called Mission: Space. It is a simulator ride, it feels like you are in a Space Shuttle going up to the moon. It was really cool. That is really the only "thrill" ride there (i think). I love walking around and looking at all the countries, shopping and browsing there is really neat too. The food is awesome.
I have never been to Pleasure Island, so i have no input on that.

All great suggestions! Epcot is the place to be at night as far as the atmosphere and GREAT places to eat. DH and I have been to Disneyworld several times without kids (never with kids!) and Epcot is our favorite place! Pleasure Island has some great shopping andm I've heard of a great jazz club there but we never went. Don't miss the firworks show at Epcot at 9pm (I think). If you've never seen it you will be AMAZED literally. It's absolutely fantastic. The countries and the food are just the best. I highly recommend the Marakesh (in Morocco) and the steak place in Canada.

The Brown Derby is an EXCELLENT restaurant and I think it's in MGM if you go there.

Mission Space offers puke bags to everyone upon entry. NOT for me!!:)

Hope you have a great time!

Keep 'em coming!! You guys are getting me psyched! :) Oh, and no spin type rides for moi...I get sick easily but I DO love rollercoasters! And, Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands!!

Heidi - we just spent three glorious weeks in Florida & loved Epcot & Animal Kingdom. The rollercoaster Expedition Everest was AWESOME & the Safari was incredible!!!! Our favorites by far.

I loved Epcot's World Showcase as I got to wonder from country to country. What is better than French patries at a street cafe??? LOL

Have FUN!!! :)
