I was not at all aware of this, but it makes sense. If you are in the unhappy position of having to negotiate forgiveness of a credit card or other debt and actually succeed, you will owe federal income tax on the amount of the forgiven debt. I would never have thought of this and it was a complete surprise to me. I know some members have posted about trying to seek help with debt management, which sometimes involves debt forgiveness, and thought this would be good information.
