Brat-eating Contest

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Brat-eating Contest

Bratwurst Days is this weekend. I'm looking forward to the parade, but plan to be somewhere else, during the Brat-eating contest! ESPN is coming to Sheboygan, to cover it. Last year, the woman who won, ate 35 brats. Yuck. I never eat more than one at a time, when I have them! I just can't imagine.

Brat Days

We drove past the park tonight and it was FULL of people! Tomorrow, we will be able to hear the music and smell brats cooking the WHOLE day! The park is about a mile from my house, I think. I love brats, but if we have any tomorrow, we will get them at the store and cook them at home. It's a fundraiser, so the food is expensive. Besides there are plenty of other people who do go and buy the expensive food.

I remember having bratwurst a couple of times in my pre-vegetarian days, tho here, Italian sausage is more popular. Even if I DID eat meat, I can't imagine eating 35 brats!! What would that do to your digestive system, not to mention your cardiovascular system as well! :)

I hope you get good weather, since it is fund raiser. What is the money used for?

In any event, it sounds like fun :)

The Jaycees put it on, so probably their operating budget. I'm looking at their website and can't find anything specific.

I love brats, but one is enough for me!

Good grief. I thought 35 brats last year was bad enough. This year's winner ate 58 brats!

I hope they gave he/she a Lipitor "chaser" after all that! LOL!

How big ARE these things?

We were watching something on the food channel on cable yesterday, while some of those shows are *entertaining*, I just don't *get* the point of some others. Why eat enough to actually make yourself puke?? It's no wonder that people in this country have obesity issues, considering the amount of food they consume. I guess I just don't understand the reason for these food eating contests...........

By Luvn29 on Sunday, August 6, 2006 - 10:05 am:

I have always questioned the reason for these, myself. They just don't make sense, and I couldn't watch them because of the other people who went beyond their limit, having to throw up!

Bratwurst are pretty big! Abut 4-5 inches long and an inch thick. Each brat, like he ate, is 290 calories and has 800 mg sodium in it! Like I said, one is quite enough.

The standard sandwich, in Sheboygan, is a double brat, on a hard roll! LOL! I have never eaten one. I just get a single, if I'm at a brat fry.

I totally agree on the food eating contests. Yes, I too, saw in the TV listings yesterday, that there was "Brat eating 'championship'" somewhere in the country.

I don't want to sound preachy, but imo, that is pure gluttony; eating more than you need to nourish yourself. Eating until you have to vomit just seems so wrong. Not only is it a terrbile waste of food, but it's somehow morally repugnant. We have such abundance in this country, and waste SO much. Just let your mind flash back to pictures we've all seen of little children in different parts of the world, who are nothing more than living skeletons. Just because we HAVE the food doesn't mean we have the right to waste it. I would like my legacy to be something better than the fact that I could eat 35 of ANYTHING!

May our blessed abundance always continue, but I hope we learn to become better stewards of it.

Hol, I totally agree with you! We only live 6 blocks from the park. I could hear an announcer and people cheering. I think it's kind of disgusting and have a hard time figuring out how people find this entertaining. When I saw the results on our local paper's website, it made me want to throw up! Just think of how many people those 58 brats could have fed!

That is SO Nauseating!!

We had a jello eating contest in high school once. It was a fund raiser thing (i think for prom). I was in the Jell-O eating contest. It was just a small plate of Jell-O that we pretty much inhaled in so many seconds. I didn't win, but i did run to the bathroom as soon as it was over because i was pretty sure i was going to puke (i didn't though). So that was just a small plate of Jell-O, i can not imagine eating more than one brat in a sitting.
Like i said before...That is just Nauseating!!
