Have You Heard of the "Red Box" for Movie Rentals???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Have You Heard of the "Red Box" for Movie Rentals???

We just got this in our local grocery store. You pick a movie title, scan your debit or credit card, and you get to keep the movie until 7:00PM the next evening. It is one dollar. If you don't return it by then, it is a dollar a day until you do. If, at the end of 25 days, you still haven't returned it, the rental charges cease, and you get to keep it.

I just got "Firewall" for DH last night, and "The Ringer" for the kids. Of course, we forgot to watch them today, so I have until 7:00PM tomorrow night, and pay another dollar each.

I guess it's not a bad idea. We have Netflix, but I always forget about them, and never get my money's worth each month.

The "best" part is, Shawn works at Blockbuster. He can get FREE rentals, but he uses them for video games. Once in a while, he'll bring home a family movie. :)

I believe this started out at McDonald's. So for us the coolest thing is, they don't have to be returned at the same red box you rented. So if you are on the road, you can rent for the car dvd and drop it off when you get there.

How do you know if your store has this?? And they're at McDonald's, too?? Is this in the video department, or a different area? Do they have lots of titles? $1.00 a rental is very appealing!

I have never heard of this or seen it at any stores around here... How new is it?

check out redbox.com. It is a new venture by mcd's and coinstar. it is a video kiosk. Ours are only at mcd's, they are both just right out side the door (think vending machine)

We just got this in our area grocery stores. We've really enjoyed it. I just pick up a movie on the way out of the store while the kids are in the grocery cart still. It's been great for us. Although, we do have to still pay tax. So, it's $1.06.LOL:)

We don't have them at McDonald's. Ours is in a big grocery chain here called Stop & Shop. And yes, there is a Coinstar machine next to it. I love that, too. You bring in your change jar, dump it in the machine, and you get a voucher that you bring to the register for cash, or you can apply it to your grocery order, etc. There is also a provision on there to donate it to a charity. I think they give you several choices.

I always throw all of my change into the bottom of my purse, then I keep it in a canning jar until it is full. Last time I filled it, DS Mike's school was collecting money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The classes were having a competition to see who could collect the most. He asked me if we could donate my change jar. Well, I could have used the money for something else, but I thought it would be a great lesson to the kids on giving. So, we took it to Coinstar. They do take a surcharge. I can't remember how much, but it is a small percentage. It is worth it, tho, when you don't have to count and roll all that change. Turns out, after the surcharge, we had about $80.00! He added twenty out of his own money, and we wrote a check for $100.00. His class collected a lot, but they got beaten out by the middle school kids (he goes to a small private school), so that was good.

Yes, you do pay tax on the movie rental. For us, it is 7% on the dollar. Mike works at Stop & Shop, so I just give them to him to return. The machine IS right by the door, so it is very convenient.

They have about 100 titles. Mostly the newest movies.
