Why were you named your name...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Why were you named your name...
By Marg on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 08:15 pm:

I recently thought about changing my name, sorry Margaret well, what can I say.

How many Margaret's do you know under the age of 40?

I was the only girl in our whole school named Margaret.

Why did your parents name you the name they chose?

My name is Margaret Elva, yes, teased greatly in school. My mom called me Margaret Elva until she passed away. Nicknamed Marg by my dad, that stuck. But now the nickname marg has no fond memories, thought about going by Elva for a while.

I was named Margaret Elva because that was my great grandmother's name. My grandmother had two daughters to her first husband and named one Margaret Elva. She is a southern belle and fits the name well.

I could never change my name due to those reasons.

Dh often calls me Elvie.

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 08:34 pm:

I LOVE the name Margaret! I thought of it for our daughter's name, but my DH didn't like it enough. I think Meg is a sweet nickname, and I love the full name, too.

I was named Deanna Marie after a great grandparent somewhere along the line whose last name was Dean. No meaning for the Marie.

My daughter's name, Natalie Marie, has no significance whatsoever. We just liked it!

By Ilovetom on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 08:37 pm:

I am Patricia after an old great aunt I never knew. So.

My daughters are Leanna English- after an aunt and Shawn Caroline after my best friend in college who was a boy. She hates her name, but I love it cuz I still love him so. :)

I think of him everytime I hear that Vienna song by Billy Joel.

Boy that was rambling.

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 08:39 pm:

I have heard that my grandmother named me Sandra(Sandy). My daughter's name is the same as mine but she was named Sandy at birth by her biological mother 20 months before we even met her. She was named after an aunt. We think it's pretty neat that we both have the same name but it tends to be a pain sometimes too. (Big Sandy, Little Sandy, Dr.'s records, etc...)
BTW, I like the name Margaret :)

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:21 pm:

I do not know why I am named Yvonne but I have always appreciated having a unique name. My daughter Jessica hates that her name is common. Addison appreciates his unique name. Well...until he saw Addison (a woman) on Greys anatomy LOL. He doesn't like a girl "having his name".

By Kateg on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:26 pm:

I was named Kathleen after a friend of the family and Elizabeth after a great aunt that my dad thought highly of. I've loved my name even though I rarely go by it...it's usually just Mama, Kat, Kate or an endearing comment from DH. :)

My DD is Emily (only name the ex & I could agree on) and Suzanna (after my sister) and Ruth (after ex's deceased mother). She really likes it right now, but she's 9. :)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:28 pm:

My sister's name is Margaret, and I MEAN Margaret! LOL! She went ballistic if you called her Maggie, so now even at the age of 43, she is still Margaret.

My name is Dawn, because I was the first child in the family and Dawn starts the day, like I started the family. (also, I think it was a cool 60's thing that my parents did, but I don't think that entered into it, at the time. I was born in 1960!)

I love being a Dawn Marie, because it's like belonging to an exclusive club. There are so many of us, but not every Dawn has Marie, for a middle name. It seems special to me, even if it is common.

It's also better than Darrell Scott, which is what I would have been, if I'd been a boy! Although, I'm thinking Darrell isn't THAT bad of a name, now. I hated the thought, when I was a kid and was glad I'd been a girl, instead.

By Hol on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:42 pm:

Great thread!! I am told that I was named Holly because it has a Celtic derivation, and I am English. It supposedly means "friendship" (according to my Mom) :). A co-worker of DH's once told him that my name suits me because I am always so "bubbly". (That was 35 years ago. My "bubble machine" has since been dented by some hard knocks in life. I think, maybe now, in my more mature years, I am more subdued, but have the same sincerity and love for people and animals). Okay, that was probably more than you wanted to know. LOL!

Truth be told, I just think my Mom liked "different" names. I was born in the late "40's, and my sister was born in the early '50's. Her name is Kimberly. They are both fairly common names now, but back then, not so. Teachers always thought my name was a typo, and on the first day of school, would call me "Molly" or "Polly". I also hated the fact that all the other kids could find pencil boxes and barrettes with their name on it, but not me. My DH was born the same year as I and his name is Robert. I think 40% of our graduating class was Robert or Linda.

My middle name is Norma (I'm not fond of it), because it is my Mom's first name. My Dad wanted to give it to me as a FIRST name.

I named my birth kids Deborah and Daniel. Mostly because they are both strong heroes in the Bible, but also because I love the actress Deborah Kerr. To me, she was the epitome of English femininity. Also, to me, Daniel is a strong masculine name.

I didn't name my two youngest DS's, Shawn and Michael, as they are adopted, but I love their names.

My grandaughter is Megan, but we call her Meg.

BTW: I LOVE the name Margaret. It was my paternal grandma's name (tho people called her "Annie"...go figure). I am Episcopalian, and I chose Margaret as my confirmation name. :)

By Hol on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:47 pm:

I was supposed to be Colin Bruce if I was a boy.

Dawn, be glad you were born when you were. In the '70's, when I had my birth kids, people were calling their kids "Moonbeam" and "Sunshine". LOL! We had people stationed with us in Massachusetts, who called their son "Pax" because it means "peace" in Latin. It was during the Vietnam era.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:05 pm:

I'd much rather be named Dawn! LOL! Hol, I could NEVER find stuff with my name on it, when I was a kid! Now, they have tons of stuff with Dawn on it! I'd get so frustrated. Cheryl and Margaret could always find their names! LOL!

Sarah was picked by Gary, after a dear family friend, of the same name. Joy, was my mom's middle name. When Sarah was in the daycare, when she was little, there was an Emily and I thought that sounded like a cool name. Her middle name is Marie, too, because I thought Emily Marie sounded really well together! I picked it one night, at work, while I was at "lunch" at 2 in the morning! (I worked nights!) I was trying Emily with all kinds of other names and probably driving my co-worker crazy! Anyway, that's how we got Sarah Joy and Emily Marie.

Oh yeah. I was trying to avoid, Ashley, Amanda, and Jennifer, which I thought were getting to be overused, back in 1989 and 1992. Little did I know how popular Sarah and Emily were getting to be! LOL! Oh well. You just never know how the names will play out, 5 years later, when they start school.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:13 pm:

I guess my parents just liked the name Patricia. They were going to call me Trisha but my brothers, who were teenagers at the time, knew a girl named Trisha and she was ugly and mean (that's the way the story goes, really) so they didn't want to call their little sister Trisha, that's why i ended up with Patti. My brothers and sisters liked the name Lynn as well, so that's why my name is Patricia (Patti) Lynn.
I think it is neat that my 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters helped name me.

Marg, my cousin's name is Margaret and she is under 40! I do like that name because it's not so different that no one has ever heard of it, but it is still a bit of a uncommon name. It's pretty.

I liked the name Isabella for my dd way before she was even conceived. There was a character on Days of Our Lives named Isabella years ago and i have loved the name ever since. I thought it was quite an uncommon name. Of course once she got to school i realized that there were several other Isabella's around.
Joseph was picked for my son (and this is a lame reason for naming a child) because it's the ONLY name dh and I could agree on for a boy. But he is definitely a Joey and loves that Joey is another word for baby kangaroo .

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:20 pm:

My father's name is Chales Joseph III, and I would have been named Charles IV had I been a boy. Since I was a girl my mom wanted to name me Nicole, which my grandmom didn't like, so she suggested I be named Crystal Jennifer to have my father's initials. Crystal was one of the top names of 1982, so I was one of many in school. I realized after the fact that I've done the same to my daughter, there are TONS of Madisons around her age!

By Mommmie on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:31 pm:

My girl's name was Margaret, but I had a boy. I love the name Margaret. I know one Margaret under 40 and she goes by Meg. I would not have shortened it had I used it.

By Hol on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:36 pm:

At least no one calls their kids "Hazel" or "Ralph" anymore! LOL!

By Tink on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:49 pm:

Oh Hol, Julia Roberts named her girl twin "Hazel"!! I'm sure it will become popular again.

My mom named me after Corrie Ten Boom, a woman who lived through the Holocaust and wrote a book about it. Her mother told her it wasn't something I would want to be called once I grew up so my name is Corinne but I guess I've never grown up because I prefer Cori. My father's name is Jack so my middle name is a feminine version of that.

Samantha Joy Lynn: DH loved the name Samantha, I would have been named Joy if my grandmother hadn't talked my mom out of it, and Lynn is in both grandmother's and both aunt's names so no one had their feelings hurt.

Seth Robert Vincent: DH liked the name Seth, Robert is DH's name and Vincent is my FIL's name.

Isabella Rose: I finally got to choose a first name and I watched some stupid Hallmark movie called "Amy and Isabelle" and I liked the name. Rose is DH's grandmother's name and it just went well with Isabella and our last name. VERY Italian.

By Hol on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:56 pm:

You're right about Julia Roberts. I forgot that. Also, Tracy Ullman (on HBO) named her daughter Mabel. :)

By Cat on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 10:58 pm:

My parents like the name Cathleen and my mom's name is Elizabeth. So I guess I'm the second Cathleen Elizabeth on here! (spelled with a "C" though, instead of a "K"--my parents had to be different. I have a brother named Bryan with a "Y" instead of an "I"). If we had a girl now we'd name her Rachel (because we like the name) Elizabeth Marie (after both my mom and grandmother). Yes, it'd be a long name but imho, beautiful. Robin's middle name is Galen, after dh and his dad and half his family (both his sisters have it in their names and so does his neice). Randy's middle name is William, the same as my dad's middle name, my brother's and my nephew's. My other brother's middle name is Russell after my dad's first name.

By Hol on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:13 pm:

When you name something, you make it yours. That's why God had Adam name all of the animals in the Garden of Eden. I think that's also why DH gets nervous whenever a stray kitty shows up here, and I name him/her. He knows they'll never leave. :)

By Tarable on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:16 pm:

Well my name is Tara Nicole and it was picked right out of a baby name book my mom says but.. i kinda wonder since Gone with the Wind is her favorite movie... But she definately liked "different" names because my sister's name is Sonya Felice.

As for my kids my 1st DDs name is Alexis Taylor. Alexis was a compromise because her father's family hated what we picked first, it was supposed to be Zoe Taylor. Found both in a name book and loved them. Alexis fits her better though. If she was a boy her name would have been Nathaniel Alexander... Just love those names together.

DD #2 is Jordan Nicole.... Her name was picked by my ex SIL in the delivery room because we were told that DD was a DS from the sonogram.. well they were WRONG... So we had to come up with somehitng kinda unexpectedly... She said she loved the name Jordan for a girl and her father and I both like it so then it was just coming up with a middle name.. we diecided on Nicole after about an hour because it is my middle name.. sounded good and we could agree on it. Since we thought she was going to be a boy we were going to use Nathaniel Alexander since we couldn't on Alexis...

This is a ver interesting thread.. I love finding out why people are named what they are...

By Kate on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:31 pm:

Oh, Tink, that's awesome!! I LOVE Corrie ten Boom! You didn't say what your feminized version of Jack was though, for your middle name....is it Jacqueline?

By Mom2three1968 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:37 pm:

My mother always liked the names Kelly and Susan so when she adopted me first I looked more like Kelly than a Susan so Kelly it was... My middle name is Dawn, that was given to me to be named after my father who's name was Donald. My birth name was Carol Ann, that was the name of my birth mother's best friend whom she stayed with while she was pregnant with me...

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 12:23 am:

My name is Bobbie Jo, I was names after a character on Petticoat Junction. Which was a black and white sitcom that ran from 1963-1970. There were three daughter on the show, Betty Jo, Billie Jo and Bobbie Jo.

Oldest DD is Callie Dawn. Callie is Rob's great grandmother and Dawn was the name of a family friend. We were going to name her after Rob's grandma but Gladys Ermal just didn't do it for us. LOL

DS is Dillan Michael. Dillan because we liked the name and we wanted him to be able to go bye Dill which he does. Michael was Rob's oldest brothers name.

The girls are Emily Marie and Katelyn (Katie) Marie. I chose the first names because I liked them. Marie was Dawns middle name. Dillan was to be Katelyn Marie but I don't think he would be happy with that name now.. If the girls had been boys they would be Cody Joe and Colton James.

By Kaye on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 04:53 am:

Kimberly Rae, named after a cousin my mom babysat and my dad's middle name.

My children, Nicole Rae (just like the first name). Douglas Charles, again liked the first name and the middle name makes him the 6th generation charles in my hubby's family. And the baby is Andrew Michael, hubby's middle name and then my mom died while I was preg and her middle name was Ann, so he is named after her.

By Christylee on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 05:58 am:

Christina Lee - Christina after my great Aunt Tina who helped my mom and dad alot (she always called me Tina, when I went by Christy because she went by Tina) and the Lee because it is both my mom's and dad's middle names. We all have the same intials.

Brendan came along after Chuck and I were driving down the street and we'd just found out he was going to be a boy he said " guess we should think about names" and I said I like "Brendan Michael". Nothing else was said really and the next month at a Christmas party someone asked what were going to name him and we both replied "Brendan Michael". From then on that's who he was! lol..Pretty easy!

If he would have been a girl or if I ever have another and it is a girl she would be Bethanie Rae.

By Kittycat_26 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 07:43 am:

This is really neat.

I'm named Amanda after my Great Great Grandmother. I was going to be and Amanda Lynn until during labor my mother realized she was going to call me and instrument. It was then that I became Amanda Lee.

My son is named Timothy for my dad. It's his middle name. Timmy's middle name is for my DHs brother who died shortly before I met him.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 07:54 am:

Kaye, I LOVE your middle name!! I love that you used it for your DD as well. My coworker's first name is Petrea, and her DD's name is Cady Petrea. My friend's middle name is Lyn and both of her girls have the same middle name.

I have *no* clue why I was named my name. All I know is I hated it growing up. LOL Every other person was named Karen when I was a kid in GA. Quite a few of them here also. Not even going to say my middle name because that's the part I hated so much. My mom and dad did a lousy job picking middle names for all 3 of us. LOL

When I met my X, his 1st two kids had *J* names. When we had Jeff, we continued that (at his suggestion). Then when Jen came along, we (he) felt we HAD to continue it, so all 4 kids have a *J* name. I was against that, but at least I won out on Jen's middle name.

Juliet Anne
Jason Lee
Jeffrey Lee (don't even ask me why they have the same middle name - Lee is my sister's middle name, and that had something to do with using it for Jeff, I have no clue why Jason has the same middle name)
Jennifer Lauren

By Vicki on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 08:11 am:

Vicki Sue: My dads name is Victor (Vic) and my moms name was Susie... So they put it together and named me Vicki Sue.

Named my dd Staci Ann: Staci just because I always liked that name. Seemed just so girlie or something. Spelled it with an "i" like my name and I just liked the way it looked. Ann was my moms middle name so I picked that after my mom. Dh liked it too, so I was lucky. I had that name for any girls that I had since I was like 8 or something. LOL

By Fraggle on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 08:24 am:

Meredith-after Meredith Baxter Burney, who was very popular when I was born. I hated my name when I was growing up since it was so different. Now, I love my name.:-)

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 08:32 am:

If we'd had a boy, I would have liked the name Gregory Allen.

By Tonya on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 08:45 am:

I was named Tonya after a soap star in the late 70's and Lynn after nothing.

Last name for kids is Stone
My kids are Timothy Rolan (Rolling Stones) Rich wanted Rolan first I said no way and I loved Timothy so that is what stuck for him.

Remember the last name OK DD is Jade Mildred

Rich thought that Jade had to have a first name that went with the last just like Timmy did so that is where hers came from. Until I was 8 months it was going to be Sprea (long "E" sound) and Mildred was after my grandma (my dads mom) she passed away right before Timmy's 2nd birthday. I am head strong just like my grandma and I want my daughter to be just that way too so I thought giving her grandmas name was a good head start for her. If she is half the person grandma was then she will be a very strong women.

By Sunny on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 08:56 am:

I was named after the Beatles' song, "Michelle".

By Melanie on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 10:35 am:

Mine is Melanie Sue. My mom says she always just loved the name Melanie and Sue was the only name she could think of that sounded good with it.
When our daughter, Peyton, was born, we decided on the middle name, Suzanne, for her. My mom's name is Susan, my middle name is Sue, and Suzanne was another variation on that name. :)

By Dandjmom on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 10:36 am:

Well I'm Letishe, I think my name came form someone on television, be it the soap opera;s new, or just a tv show have no idea.

BUt I have always believed that you are suppsoed to be named after soem oen in the family or soem oen that hads touched your parents lives.

Case in point, my first born my daughter. Davongah, name came from all of my male cousins. I knew that I was having a girl so naturally I looked to my female cousins, didnt' work, then I started writing the boy's mnames down and noticed that all of my male cousins had one thing in common. Either in the first, last, middle or nickname was eithre the name Devonta, Devon, Davon, Deon. and I rememner i went to school wtih a girl with a similiar sounding name so we came up wtih Davongah, her father didnt' liek ti at first, but soon as she was borna dn just before he was murdered , he told me that he loved the name Davongah and how it jut seemed to fit her.

And then with my second child my son, my kids have tohave similiar names. So it didn't take much thinking but I knew I was having a boy and after all my daughte had been names after boys, so could I pull it off and make her name work for a boy without it being the same name? Sure with just a drop of a few letters my daughter''s name becaue my son's name backwards/reversed, how ever you see it, ( an dby the way did I mention that my daughter's middle name came from both of her grandmothers )

so there for I have:
Davongah Justin Martin
Justin Davon Martin

By Andyjoy on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 11:04 am:

My name is Andrea Joy. Andrea means "womanly" or "woman of God", and my parents hoped that would be true of me.

They named me Joy because they were trying for kids for 5 years and were told they probably wouldn't conceive. When I was born they said I brought much joy to their lives, so they had to name me that.

If they had produced a son, he would have been Jason. They never had a son, but I married a Jason instead, so they still got their Jason!

By Kay on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 11:21 am:

I'm not really sure why my parents named me Kay - I think my mother heard it and liked it. Kay is not really a little kid's name, but they called me by both names - Kay Lynn (we're in Texas, so the double-name thing fits LOL).

My oldest son is named after his father and grandfather, so there was no thinking involved. :)

My oldest daughter is Catherine Colleen, named after a great-great-grandmother from Ireland named Catherine, and the Colleen came from her aunt's middle name.

My 'baby' (yes, at 15 she's still my baby) is Amy Elizabeth - Amy after the character in Little Women (and I have always loved the name), and Elizabeth after a beloved relative.

By Tink on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 11:39 am:

Kate, my middle name is Jacquelle. Don't like it, prefer not to say it unless I have to. :) So I'm Corinne Jaquelle...see why I just go by Cori?

By Kate on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 11:42 am:

Well, Cori, your middle name is very unique! Corrie's real name was Cornelia--are you glad you're Corinne instead?

Cori is a pretty name. I used to babysit a Cori Lynn. :)

By Karen~admin on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 11:48 am:

Kate, my friend's DD (who I mentioned above) is Cori Lyn. Her other DD is Kati Lyn.

Since several of you have the same middle name as I do, I will go ahead and give it: Karen Sue. And I always hated it. LOL

By Mommyof5 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 12:34 pm:

I am Tammie Sue. My sister and my Dad named me. A few days before I was born they were watching one of the Tammy and the Bachelor shows so I am a Tammie. The Sue comes from one of my dads cousins that my sister really liked.

My kids are Holly Renee - Holly because her Vietnamese name was Hong and so we kept the first two letters and Renee is my sister's middle name.

Megan Emma - Megan was just a name we liked and Emma is dh's mother's middle name and two of my great grandmother's middle name.

Cassandra Lillie - Cassandra (call her Cassie) a name we liked and Lillie after dh's grandmother who passed away a few months before cassie was born.

Tessa Sue - Tessa is greek and means 4th born..and she was our fourth. Sue is my middle name.

Simon Henry - Simon's Chinese name was She Hui (she pronounced Shay not she like the female pronoun). We decided to keep both the S and the H. We liked the meaning of the name Simon and Henry was dh's grandfather.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 01:00 pm:

LOL Karen. The way you talked about your middle name, i thought it would be something like Gertrude or Helga or something. There are much worse names out there. But hey, if you don't like, you don't like it.

For my kids i went with the standard Marie and Anthony as middle names.
Isabella Marie and Joseph Anthony

IT was hard enough figuring out first names LOL!

By Mom2three1968 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 04:43 pm:

My youngest son is named Gary AlbertIII, it will be interesting to see if he names his son after him if he has a little boy!!

By Karen~admin on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 05:01 pm:

Patti, I will tell you the reason I always hated it. When I was in elem. school, I was very tall and skinny, taller than everyone in the school other than 2 boys, and I was a sickly kid and missed a lot of school. I got picked on all the time for those 2 things, and I mean ALL the time. A bunch of kids used to call me like they were calling a pig.........sooey.........sooey...........sooey........and it made me miserable. So you can see why I hated my name. LOL

By Luvn29 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 05:21 pm:

I'm Adena Lee. They were trying to come up with something original, and boy did they manage! I have lived my entire life correcting people because they can't pronounce it, and try to add an "n" or "r" in it somewhere for some reason. It's said just like it is spelled Ah-dee-nah.

Little did my parents know that there is an entire town in OH, where I was born, called Adena! And even an Adena Elementary School, so I told my husband we need to move there!

Lee is my father's middle name.

DD is Emily Kaitlyn. I loved the name Emily, and at the time, it wasn't really that popular. Till the year I named her that, now they are everywhere! And I just thought Kaitlyn sounded good with it. My family is also really bad for sticking nicknames on kids, so I was also trying to find a name I liked without too many possibilities for bad nicknames. Then Ashton came along and started calling her Mimi all of the time, so that stuck and I still call her Mims all the time, pronounced "meems".

DS is Ashton James-Lee. I grew up collecting Ashton Drake porcelain dolls, and so I loved that name for a boy. My husband wanted to name him after his grandfather, which is where James came in, and I knew he was our last grandchild, and I didn't want my father left out, so that's the Lee part. I hate two middle names, so I hyphenated it so it is technically one name.

By Lorebunde on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 06:51 pm:

Joan , named after Joan Crawford.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 07:31 pm:

I am surprised how many people have the middle name of Lee. I thought it was odd, growing up, that my sister Kathy's middle name was Lee - her name is Katherine Lee. I just didn't realize so many women had Lee for their middle name. My other sister is Nancy Kay. She legally changed her name to Nikki because she hated her name. I think a lot of us don't like our names.

Since we are on this subject, what nicknames came out of any of your names?

I have an aunt who used to call me Kay Sue and I hated it. No one else ever called me anything like that. Now though, 2 people call me Kay - Hal and oldest DD. I can remember when we were very little, my dad called Kathy by *Woffie*. My mom often called her Kat.

Parents! We do horrible things to our kids. ROFL

Apparently Lisa was a popular name in the late 60's. I think my mom named me after the character Lisa on As the World Turns.

By Annie2 on Thursday, August 3, 2006 - 10:04 pm:

My name is Anne because my mom always liked the name. She put an E at the end of it which I like.
Many people I knew growing up had the middle name of Ann but I only knew one other girl with Anne as a first name.
Everyone calls me Annie except for Dh who calls me Anne.
My siblings and I do not have middle names. My last name was long and my mom thought two names were enough. I have never met anyone else who does not have a middle name. I find that unique.

My kids are Kelsey Mae, we liked the first name and she was born in May, and her middle name is also the middle name of my maternal great grandmother.
Makenna Rowe. I say I named her that because I liked Mikayla but was becoming too used and there was a tv show on in 94 called Mckenna. Dh says he named her because of a beloved beach in Hawaii. Rowe is a family name on dh's side, also dh's middle name.

Kaylin Julia is next. We could NOT find a first name for her. After she was born we went through the baby name books for hours. I think Kaylin stuck because the OJ trial was going on and Kato Kaelin was in our heads. My dad was terminally at the time of her birth and his mom's name was Julia.

Riley Bernard Clyde, our fourth child and only son. My dh heard this name from a tv show. My dad had just died and Bernard was his name. My MIL thought that her father should be on the list, too, hence the reason he has two middle names! LOL

If I was a boy my mom wanted to name me Peter.

Adena, My Emily goes by Meems and Mimi also. The teachers at the girls school call her Miss Em. However, that started before she went to school there. Most of the teachers knew the girls through oldest DD and DS, 12 year history with the same school system and most of the same teachers.

Dillan goes by Dill. The teachers and the kids at school call him Grandpa.. They say he has the wisdom of an old man. I say he just complains a lot. LOL

Callie goes bye Caie (Kay).

And Katelyn goes by Katie as I already said.

My extended family called me BJ or Bobbie Jo and my immediate family just calls me Bobb.. My husband is Robert Dwayne and we dated for several months before it dawned on us that we had the same name.. He goes by Rob, so we are Rob and Bobb.. Robert because it was a strong name and Dwayne after his mom's cousin.

Karen, if you reread this.. I knew what your middle name was.. LOL We have visited this topic before... Basically things could have been worse.. Most everyone I have ever met asked me what my real name was. It got so annoying to the kids in school that they would answer the new teachers/subs and tell them that Bobbie was my real name. I honestly never really hated my name.. But my dad confessed a couple of years ago that he had thought better of my name as I got older and he half expected me to ask for it to be changed. I told him I was fine with my name.. It is me.. And it could have been worse..

That's so funny, a lot of my uncles and aunts call her Miss Em, and so do the teachers at school! Must just suit the name, huh? It must be the type of person, too, though, because I know another Emily, a total tomboy, wears nothing but basketball shorts, and NO ONE even thinks to call her a feminine nickname! Hmmmm....

Karen, I am in texas, sue is very common here. So much in fact when I moved north I jokingly call all my neices whatever sue...amanda sue, carson sue, etc.

By Melanie on Friday, August 4, 2006 - 11:58 am:

That's interesting, Kaye. I've never known anyone else with "Sue" as a middle name until this thread. In fact, several times I have said that Sue is my middle name only for the person I told it to say, "Melanie Susan" and I have to correct them and tell them it's not Susan, just Sue. LOL.

I was named after two grandmothers. Beatrice Virginia. Unfortunately they both had long names. I hated my name as a kid, but can honestly say I think I've grown into it. I still rarely use Beatrice, but prefer Bea.
My mother's name is Margaret, and I know lots of Margarets. They go by Marge, Margie, Peg, Peggy, Maggie, Madge, and Meg.

By Tarable on Friday, August 4, 2006 - 12:32 pm:

I know a ton of people with the middle name Sue. In TX it is a pretty common occurance, or at least used to be. My aunt's name is Reba Sue... for that matter my Mom and her sisters were always called by both 1st and Middle names by their families. there was Ruth Ann, Ruby Jane (my mom) and Reba Sue. I think it is kinda neat but something that is becoming less frequent as time goes on.

As far as nicknames go, my oldest goes by Sami most of the time but her affectionate nickname for the family is Sami Sue. She loves it. One of the reasons I agreed to Seth's name was the lack of nicknames but he was "Bubba" as a baby and toddler and he loves to be called "Sethman" (think Batman and the theme song). Until about a year ago, Isabella thought her real name was Bella since she is never called by her full name. Recently, my oldest has been calling her "Isabelly" and, since she was a baby, I've called her "Lellabelle" but I have no idea why.

Ditto Sunny!:) I, too, was named after the Beatles' song "Michelle." My mom wasn't sure how to spell it, so mine is one "L," but that is not too uncommon. (Michele Lee from Knot's Landing is one L!)

I'm Catherin Lydia, Catherin after my grandmothers and lydia because my parents liked it. My dk's are Scott (liked it) Lorne William (after both his grandparents), Nikholas Deangelo (just because we liked the names) and Sharrayh (pronounced like Shark without the k and a ray of sunshine, and it's a variation of Sarah)Lexy Catalina. Lexy was this completely adorable little girl I met at my last doctor's appointment and catalina is like Catherin in spanish :)

By Luvn29 on Saturday, August 5, 2006 - 11:42 pm:

Catherin, I love your dks names! Especially Lorne and Sharrayh, and I love how you spelled Nikholas.

By Marg on Sunday, August 6, 2006 - 08:12 am:

It's funny Bea, mom never liked any of those nicknames, it was always Margaret.

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, August 7, 2006 - 12:44 am:

Kate G and Cat--
Dh let me name our dd and I came up with Kathryn Elizabeth. The book I had said Katherine and its variations meant 'pure' and Elizabeth was 'consecrated to God". That is what I wanted for her. But we shortened it to something I call a huggable name and call her Katy Beth.

I have no idea why I'm named Deborah except in the late 50's and early 60's it was popular. My mom mentioned once that Deborah was a judge in the Bible so maybe that was why. Just don't know.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, August 7, 2006 - 01:12 am:

My sister will ALWAYS be Margaret! She would draw blood, with her fingernails, if my other sister and I ever called her Maggie! (Yeah, even with the threat of pain, we still had to push her buttons!) Mom tried to get Meg going for a while, but at that point, I was so used to calling her by her full name, that I couldn't change!
