School registration

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: School registration
By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 06:46 pm:

We went this afternoon to register for school. Dropped $95/kid!

$30 registration fee
$50 activity fee, allows you to get into games for free and includes a yearbook
$4 student planner
$11 band uniform cleaning fee

With fall sports, that would have been another $25! LOL! My kids aren't jocks, though, and you don't have to pay the activity fee, for band, other than the cleaning fee.

There were hardly any other people there, so we went through the process quickly! They also take pictures ($20.75 and Emily wanted a sweatshirt ($26 for a pullover hoodie, with her name on it.)

The library where you register is nice and cool. Then we went into the school to show Emily where her classrooms were. That was HOT! When we were done, we had to walk a block to the car! I'm all nice and cool now, though!

Is this public school? I've never heard of paying a registration fee for public school....

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 08:43 pm:

Yes, it is a public school and "registration" is what they call the $30 fee. I'm not really sure what it's for.

Here in Illinois the fees are $70 for my fifth grader, and $75 for my eighth grader, here they are called book fees, it infuriates my dh he said at the end of the year the books should be sitting on our book shelf...

We had to pay a student fee for our kids in ohio, but we do not have to do that here in tx. I think it has something to do with the difference in property taxes.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 10:03 pm:

Trust me, our property taxes are already high enough, in Sheboygan. You pay one way or another!

Here in Fl we dont have book fees but we do have to send in school supplies..Its not alot. DSD#4 starts 6th grade on Monday...seems like she just got out for the summer.

I'm getting ready to go shell out $83 & $86

By Tarable on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:42 am:

My sixth grade dd has her schedule pick up on tuesday and I figured out with all the fees I have to pay that day that it is going to cost me $92 and our we live in TX... and out property taxes are outrageous! at least there are no fees for elementary school but i did have to buy $70 worth of school supplies for my 4th grader.

By Joy~bundles on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 01:20 pm:

I had to shell out $105 in registration fees for my DS, who is going into 4th Grade (public school). This, in addition to a large tax increase that was passed in the Spring. When do I get to keep any of the money I make??

By Ilovetom on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 07:47 pm:

Well, private school here.

15.00 PTA
25.00 Atheletic
20.00 air condition. LOL.
30.00 room fee.
At least 200.00 per child for books.

Multiply by 2 cuz they are twins. I would be pleased with 105 or so. And I pay taxes too. :)

Not complaining though. It's all we have and so.

Do you have to "register" the kids every year? We register once before entering Kindergarten and that's it. There are no fees at the elementary level, but we do have to buy basic school supplies.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 09:31 pm:

We register EVERY year, the first week in August! We also have to buy school supplies, EVERY year.

By Tink on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 11:07 pm:

We don't have any kind of registration fees here. High school extracurriculars do have fees associated with them and yearbook, Student Body Cards, etc all have to be paid for but there are no fees for basic education. What happened to a free and public education for everyone? We do purchase basic school supplies and the teacher sends home a classroom wishlist so we try to send in as many of those things as possible. I'm totally blown away at the fees you all have to pay!

Ilovetom, if you don't pay the air conditioning fee, do your twins have to sit out in the hall???:)
