Trying to register ds for school (a long vent)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Trying to register ds for school (a long vent)
By Tunnia on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 04:20 pm:

Ok, I'm officially irritated! I have been trying to register my ds for 1st grade and it has been one thing after another. First I tried at the beginning of June, but was told to come back closer to school starting so that the person who handles the new registrations would be there. Ds went to a private kindergarten and that's why he is a new register. So right before I left town for a week I called to see if I could now register him and what all I needed and when I was told that two of the things I would need was two proofs of residency I asked them "Why?" because my dd has been going to school there since kindergarten (she is going into 5th grade this fall) and I volunteer at the school and everyone knows me, everyone has known ds since he was a toddler and the music teacher is my neighbor so it's not like the people at the school don't know that we belong in this school! They said that they had to have it so I figure it's stupid, but not a battle worth fighting. I got back from vacation this weekend and today I run errands and then go to the school this afternoon only to find out that even though the office is open until 3:30pm they only do new registers from 8am-noon. Gee, I wish I had been told that when I called!!! I was told that I'd have to come back tomorrow morning. I wasn't thrilled, but said ok and asked if they would look over my paperwork and make sure I had everything so I wouldn't have to keep coming back again and again. I was told that I needed a new vision and hearing sheet because ds's was dated in June 2005 and was over a year old. Now, if they would have let me register him at the begining of the summer it wouldn't have been expired (GRRR!), but it's expired now so they need a new dated form. I asked if he actually has to have the hearing and vision tests again and was told no, only a current dated form was needed. So I get home and call the ped and they tell me that the schools have to have a valid form and for ds's form to be valid he has to have the tests done again and they won't do the tests without a check-up since it's been a year since his last check-up. I explain to the lady that he's already had one vision and hearing done by them and one vision by an opthamologist because his older sibling has a lazy eye and a hearing by an ENT because he was a late talker and we were making sure his hearing was fine. No dice! We have to have the tests done before he can register and he has to have the check-up. So I ask them if we can post-pone the check-up and just do the vision and hearing since dh recently changed jobs and we won't have insurance until Sept 1 and that was a "no-go" as well. So Wed morning I have pay $200+ out-of-pocket to take my child who is up-to-date on shots and is only late for his annual check-up by 1 month (I was waiting until Sept when we have insurance again to get his annual done) to to ped and get him a check-up he could really wait 1 month for and have a vision and hearing test done for the third time in 6 years when he has never ever had any vision or hearing issues! I'm sure glad that I went ahead and asked the dentist for an updated for when ds had his cleaning a couple of weeks ago so I don't have to go by the dentist's office too.

Thanks for letting me vent! I'm just so frustrated right now!

Hmmm I might talk with the school about the insurance situation. Say, look our new insurance kicks in, in sept. Can I register with this form and get a new updated one in a couple of months. They may be willing to work with you.

The other option is to change the date on the doc form...hmm is that illegal?

Ugh, what a mess!!!

Is it a public school? If so, they should do the vision and hearing and screening for free. That's ludicrous!!!

Wow, what a runaround.

Well, I feel a little better this morning, or I guess resigned is more what I feel. I'm still feeling somewhat irritated by it all, but what can I do about it???

I did explain to the school about the lack on insurance and they told me that it wouldn't be a problem because I wouldn't have to have the screenings done again, but it turns out that the woman in the office didn't know. I looked it up last night and any child registering for the first time in a school in our county has to have had vision, hearing, and dental screenings within the last 12 months. The dental isn't a problem since he goes every 6 months, but his vision and hearing certificate expired in June and would have been valid if I had been allowed to register him the first time I tried.

Yes Pam, it is a public school, but they do not provide the testing. I have to get that outside the school system and that means I have to pay for it. Before I can register ds I have to provide the following: 2 forms of proof of residency in the district, birth certificate, social security number, last report card from kindergarten, a special GA form signed by ped proving he's had all his shots, a special GA form signed and dated proving he has had a vision screening, hearing screening, and dental cleaning within the last 12 months, plus two forms (three pages) I had to print out from the school's website and fill out. Oh and then they'll evaluate him too, to make sure that he can academically go into the 1st grade. What a lot of hoops to jump though so that ds can go to the 1st grade! Anyway, I've got everything together except the vision and hearing screenings now and after tomorrow morning I'll have those too so maybe I can register him and be done with it!
