Ankle Injury--Any Advice?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Ankle Injury--Any Advice?
By Kate on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 12:36 pm:

Okay, I was walking my daughter's Razor scooter up the driveway as well as trying to help my younger daughter up the slight hill on her bike. Because I wasn't careful, the scooter's back part got lifted up and then SWUNG HARD at my ankle and smacked my ankle bone with a direct hit. I couldn't even move for a few minutes, and then I managed to walk up to the house. Then pain mostly went away and all I had was broken skin. I was wearing socks with a folded part where the scooter hit. Okay, so now an hour later the pain has come back and I'm limping. Could I have chipped a bone?? There is no swelling around the bone.

I HATE Razor scooters!!! This isn't the first time I've done this! That back end ALWAYS swings dangerously if you lift the wheels up as you're walking it around. The other times it has hurt, but not like this and only for a minute, and no limping. This time the back end went in the opposite direction and then swung hard in a 180 turn to my ankle. Sigh.

I do not know about chipping it. I have hit my ankle bone before and the pain was horrible. I suggest you elevate it and ice it right away. Take some pain meds to reduce inflamation.

RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression (only if a sprain though), Elevation

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 01:17 pm:

RICE is the way to go, as Pam points out. And, she is right, if it is just a bruise you don't want compression (elastic bandage), but you'll know in a few hours whether it is more serious than just a bang to the ankle. If it keeps on hurting through tomorrow, I'd see a doctor, because that's the only way you'll know if it is a sprain, chipped bone, or just a bad strain. In the meantime, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off with ice will help keep the bruising down. (I don't know, but wonder if there is a nerve cluster in ankles like there is in elbows - when you hit your un-funny bone.)

See a doctor and get it x-rayed. It's the only way to know if something broke. If not broke, you have the peace of mind. Ice and elevation in the meantime sound good to me!

Any news on your ankle this morning???

By Kate on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 01:54 pm:

Hello, thanks for the advice and concern. It still twinges a bit today if I move it wrong, but it is MUCH better than yesterday. A few hours after it happened yesterday my ten year old took a major spill off her bike in the road about two houses down, so naturally I just RAN to her, which I'm sure didn't do my ankle any good, LOL! But I'm fully functional and able to even do the stairs pretty normally whereas yesterday the stairs were pretty tricky...anyway, I seem to be on the mend with just a bad bruise. No discoloration on the outside, though...you'd never know I had banged it.
