Kids can be so mean

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Kids can be so mean
By Paulas on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 03:16 am:

My DD (10) was so excited to get mail today. She hardly ever gets mail so it was a big deal. It was addressed to her, had postage stamps on it but no location mark. You know, the kind they place on the stamp as it leaves the post office of orgin. Anyway, the letter was a short note saying, "I DO NOT like you". It also said that Maddy (a friend of DD's who recently moved away) has never liked DD either. Maddy knew nothing of it and was quite hurt that someone would say that about her.

I took it back to the post office but the supervisor wasn't there. Hopefully tomorrow I will get some answers. I felt so bad for DD. I wanted to cry. I seemed to take it worse than she did, which I guess is a good thing.

It just erks me that a kid could be so mean. Thanks for letting me vent.

By Debbie on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 06:02 am:

Wow. I am just floored that someone would do that. {{{hugs}}} I just can't believe how mean some kids can be. It is just so sad.

By Colette on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 07:41 am:

Your poor dd!! That is just terrible!

By Kim on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:02 am:

I am so sorry that happened to your DD. I remember grade school well because I was picked on for being fat. I don't think it will be possible for you to trace it. BUT, if you send me your address I can send her some REAL mail! My DD iss 8 and wants a penpal really really bad! Hugs to your DD Paula!!! Kelkav00 (zero zero) @ y a h o o . c o m.

That's terrible. I know kids can be mean but that just crosses a line.

By Mom2three1968 on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 08:46 am:

My goodness, I'm so sorry to hear that!! The poor baby! I was shy and was picked on in school too. But I cannot believe that at that tender age they are already sending out mean and hateful mail like that!! Where is the parent?? I'm sure the child had to ask mom for a stamp, if it where me I'd have wanted to know what for and to whom she was writing. I would be happy to send her a card or something fun, I have a ten yr old boy and I know how excited he gets when he receives mail. ((( Big Hugs)))

Hi Paula,

Sorry to hear about that, I can't believe someone would go so far out their way to be so mean.

Did you ever sign your kids up for that monthly mail program that I posted about months ago? I remember you said you were interested.

If not maybe you could sign her up and she could get something fun in the mail.

Happy Mail For Kids

By Dawnk777 on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 09:14 am:

Do you think those kids just placed that mail, in your mailbox, without actually "mailing" it?

Send me your address, too. My kids and I would love to send her a card, too!

I'm so sorry, that is so incredibly hurtful to a child.

By Luvn29 on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 10:09 am:

I have a dd that just turned ten, so this is really bothering me. I can just imagine the excitement she felt and then BOOM, that. I could almost cry for her, the poor thing.

Kids can be so mean. And what was the point of that? More than likely, two girls were together and one thought they'd show off in front of the other and do that without even considering how your dd would feel.

It's terrible. Just terrible.

I wish we moms could set up pen pals somehow with some of our children who are close in age. I know my dd would love it, and so would my ds(6).

By Paulas on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 10:15 am:

Thank you all so much. I will email those that have offered to send her mail. She will be trilled!

Dawn, our mail boxes are at a post office rather than a rural box so it would be difficult to just place it in our box. You would have to have access from the back.

The letter is at the post office today. I have to stop by this morning and see the supervisor. Later, we are going to visit "Maddy" so I am going to take the letter with us. Perhaps she might recognize the handwriting of one of her other friends,

Again, thank you all so much. Oh, and I did send her Happymail at Valentines Day. Thanks for the reminder though. Perhaps it's time to order it again.

Adena, I just realized that our kids are the same age. My DD just turned 10 in June and I have a 6 year old DS. My email is:
cp(dot) s m i t h (at) t e l u s (dot) c o m

if you want to set up some penpals

By Pamt on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 10:41 am:

That's horrible. So sorry for you and your DD Paula. We all love her and think she's awesome!! :)

By Tayjar on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 10:49 am:

So sorry to hear about that. My DD has gone through this with 2 girls and I know how it made her feel.

By Shellyg on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 11:51 am:

Girls are so mean! I am not looking forward to these sort of things with my now eight year old.

By Crystal915 on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 12:08 pm:

How awful!!! You know, little girls are mean, and I'm finding some adult women aren't much better. What is it about us that we feel the need to cut others down? Hugs to you and your DD!!!

By Cocoabutter on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 02:12 pm:

I have a son, and I am glad. Even tho he gets into tiffs with his friends, they get over it in a day and play together like nothing ever happened, which sometimes bothers me. :) But I have seen the way the girls at school act around eachother. They are a totally different species. They are downright cruel and selfish. I hope your dd gets through these next few years without too much heartache. (((HUGS))) to you and your dd.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 04:45 pm:

My kids have pretty much avoided these kinds of encounters, with other kids, thank goodness.

My kids and I will get something together this weekend, for her.

By Cat on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 05:22 pm:

It's hard to believe that a child that age would be malicious enough to write a nasty note, address the envelope, put a stamp on it an mail it! Talk about premeditated. Very sad. I'm sure her parents would be disappointed if they knew (although I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't care :(). Big hugs to both you and your dd.

By Nicki on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 09:03 pm:

This is so heartbreaking. I feel so bad for your daughter.
Sending a hug to both of you!

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 06:52 pm:

Paula, a little package is on its way. I tried to email you, but your email box was full.

By Emily7 on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 07:16 pm:

I just saw this & think it is horrible. If it is not to late I would also like to send her some mail. Please email me at mom of 2 at bresnan dot net

By Reeciecup on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 09:33 am:

My heart is breaking for your dd. Please give her hugs and kisses from all of us at MV. Let her know how amazing she must be that someone would feel so jealous and threatened by her to do something like this.

By Paulas on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 01:31 am:

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. We discovered who it was. It was actually the little girl that the letter was about. She lied to everyone about it b/c she was so embarrassed. Apparently, she and her sister had had a huge fight and she vented by writing this letter to DD. Her parents were mortified and have apologized profusly. The little girl has also apologized.

Sorry about the full mail box Dawn. We were on holidays.

By Cocoabutter on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 10:46 am:

Glad it got all sorted out.

How does your dd feel now?

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Wow. That little girl, must have been pretty upset, to vent her anger, in that fashion.

Did DD like her package?

By Paulas on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 06:59 pm:

Yes Dawn, she loved it. It arrived today. Thank you so much. What a wonderful gesture. She asked me how you knew that she loved horses. :)

DD is feeling better and is looking forward to a visit from this little girl the end of September. I'm still unsure as to why DD got the brunt of the anger though. I think the move (the little girl had just moved away) along with the fight with her sister left her very upset but why she chose to write to DD I'll never know.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 10:23 pm:

How wonderful. I was going on an assumption, that a 10yo would probably like a horse story! LOL! I would have, when I was her age, and both of my kids would have probably read the book, too! LOL! I'm glad she loved it!
