DD completed her first triathalon.

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: DD completed her first triathalon.

I am so proud of her. She completed the race! She was not her usual self racing yesterday, but that's okay. She stuck with it and didn't quit or chicken out. She was very nervous heading over and kept complaining that her tummy was all bubbly.

Watching the older kids do the race before us just added to her fears. Some girl puked right infront of us. Thankfully, I missed it. But DD saw it and it really made her think she would do this too.

It was HOT and humid, so not the best for a race, esp since we are out of practice with school having been out for over a month. She was grounded from activity for two weeks while she let her foot heal from an injury right after we signed her up for race.

DH said when she got her drink after the run, she stopped and enjoyed it like a nice glass of tea, ROFLOL. Then she headed for biking. I was already there waiting for her. She could not for the life of her figure out how to get that helmet on correctly. I was screaming at the top of my lungs "ASK FOR HELP!" but she never did, and the staff immediately in front of me never made an effort to figure out who was needing help. ERRG. She now has her helmet on backwards and the strap across her chin (not under). I'm yelling "HER HELMETS NOT ON RIGHT!" and finally a person stops her. Does he help fix her helmet? NO! He just tells her she needs to be walking the bike until she reaches the safe zone. So off she goes for 2.5 miles with her helmet covering her eyes. Like her "cool glass of tea" she enjoys the moment of the bike ride. It was like a stroll in the park. But I figure, "shoot, she can't see, so I don't want her going fast" She passes us and slows down even more to give us a BIG smile and a wave. She is so sweet! Around she goes again for the second lap.

Finally, the bike part is over. I am already at the pool area. Now she is finally RUNNING. She ran from the bike are to the pool area. She starts her swim. She does very well considering she is not a swimmer. She can doggie paddle and dive under the water really well, but not a swimmer. She swims on her back so that she can breath better. She gets near the end of the swim but doesn't realize she needs to swim to steps to finish. We get her moving. Now she stops again not knowing she has to continue to the finish line. She looses about 20 seconds more. Runs thru the end and gets a HUGE surprise hug from a friend of ours. She was helping w/ the race. We had no idea she was there. So that was a special ending for DD to be able to get such special attention since parents were not allowed in that area.

We are so proud of her! Now that she has done it, she won't be so scared next year. And perhaps she will actually "race" next year.

All the kids got a medal. She came in 10th for girls age 8. There were 3 other girls behind her. She came in 174th out of 211 total racers of all age groups.

I can't wait for next year!

I'll have to get a photo from DH's camera. I just got video. Horrible video at that. I was wanting to watch her rather than look thru the view finder. But enough to know she was part of a race LOL.
