Words that people commonly missssssspelllllll.....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Words that people commonly missssssspelllllll.....
By Mrsheidi on Friday, June 23, 2006 - 11:22 pm:

If you put the word "full" at the end of a word, it is actually "ful" with ONE L.

Examples:
Thoughtful
Thankful
Eventful

Urgh....any other words that drive you crazy?
1. Desperate
2. Weird (another exception to the rule i before c)
3. A lot (2 words)

Anyone who wants to shoot me for bringing this up? I just read an email from a high school graduate that makes the mistake above...urgh...drives me nuts. Of course, I told her. I don't want her going into an interview and having to write things down like that.

By Cat on Friday, June 23, 2006 - 11:34 pm:

"a lot" REALLY bugs me!!! lol That's one of my pet peeves. My mom spells a lot of words wrong. She was a reading teacher, not spelling. :) One that she does is "latter" for "later". So she'll sign emails, "Talk to you latter". Ugh! lol I've told her reading her writing is like deciphering code! Now I'm not the greatest speller in the world, but I try and if I don't know and can't find it, I'll use another word! I can't thik of any more that bug me right now, but give me time. Grammar is another pet peeve of mine, but that's another post...

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 12:08 am:

Separate (should have "a rat" inside it)

Prolly, for probably!

The girl's toys are picked up. (proper use of apostrophe)

The toy's were picked up by the girls. (improper use of the apostrophe, probably my BIGGEST pet peeve!)

By Tink on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 12:30 am:

Congratulations misspelled as Congradulations really bothers me and quiet can not substitute for quite. Loose is the opposite of tight and lose is the opposite of win or find. Then there is the whole their, there, they're issue. The apostrophe issue is a huge hot button for me! Not properly punctuating when using quotes is another (non-spelling) peeve. I will admit to "alot" every once in a while, even though I know it's wrong. I'm just typing too fast to bother with the space. Yes, the ultimate in lazy!:)

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 08:11 am:

Oh yeah, Tink, I didn't think of those last night, but those bug me, too!

By Cocoabutter on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 11:14 am:

I don't like it when you see some people use the shortcuts in a message board that they do while in an intstant message chat, like ur for your, or ppl for people, etc. LOL is about the only one that doesn't bother me, but when I am reading on a board, I like to read words.

By Vicki on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 12:28 pm:

Oh lord, I must drive you guys crazy!! LOL I am terrible at spelling and apostrophes!

By Hol on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 12:33 pm:

Boy, now I know that I'm not the only one! My mother was an English teacher, and gave us a love of the written word. She used to say that you need to be able to express yourself properly, both by speaking and writing, to get by in this world.
I have worked with teenagers and their spelling makes me cringe. Now, with the use of text messaging, no one needs to properly spell anything. Writing is becoming a lost art (how many friends and relatives write you nice long letters anymore?) Emailing is nice for speed, but a letter can be cherished long after the person is gone. You know that they touched the paper, and it is in their handwriting, which is a form of expression in itself.

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 09:22 pm:

OOOhhhh, yes!
I hate it when people use "ur" and "prolly". Urgh.
Ah, yes, separate...the long lost "a" in the middle of the "p" and "r".
These just reminded me of all those words! :)

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 09:50 pm:

Cocoabutter, my kids usually type in "words" on their message boards. The MANY misspelled words on the teen message boards DRIVE my kids nuts. What drives me nuts, is when the young kids make cute little graphics and then misspell the words on the graphics.

Emily is always pointing REALLY bad spelling and grammar on her boards.

By Reds9298 on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 10:34 pm:

In real life, I hate to hear poor grammar or read misspelled words in newspapers. On this board though, I really could care less! :) I know how fast *I'm* typing sometimes, with other things going on around me, so I'm sure others do it, too. I also think that sometimes (especially on the debate board) you're typing so fast with so many thoughts running through your head, that mistakes are bound to happen.

My husband was valedictorian in H.S and at the top of his class in college, and spelling takes a bit of thought for him. It has always come easily to me. I don't think anyone's spelling errors mean anything...just that you don't always have time to think it through or it was just a typo. That's why it doesn't irritate me or drive me nuts! :)

By Hol on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 11:09 pm:

How about graffiti on buildings, overpasses, and bridge abutments, and it is spelled wrong!! LOL!! :)
(Did I spell abutment correctly? How about graffiti?)

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 11:45 pm:

I think you spelled abutment and graffiti correctly.

I hate when I type "you", when I mean "your!"

Or when I sign my emails and it comes out "dawn" instead of "Dawn!" I try to type too fast sometimes!

By Marcia on Sunday, June 25, 2006 - 04:20 pm:

I've seen some people write SALL for SAW.

By Tripletmom on Sunday, June 25, 2006 - 05:21 pm:

Ditto Reds!!!!

By Breann on Sunday, June 25, 2006 - 06:10 pm:

I agree with reds too :):)

One word that I see spelled incorrectly a LOT, is DEFINITELY. People sometimes spell it DEFINATELY. And, I always giggle when they do it in all caps. It's like shouting out that they are messing the word up, hehe ;)

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, June 25, 2006 - 11:34 pm:

Judgement for judgment

Not sure why that bothers me though.

My problem is that I CAN write beautifully but I talk like a country hick. That used to drive my English teachers nuts in high school. I made straight A's in English but soke like an ogre.

By Missbookworm on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 08:46 pm:

spelling mistakes, grammar errors the works all drive me crazy!

I can't read a book without wanting to fix it and at work EVERYONE brings things to me to edit even AFTER the boss has proofed it. Lol!
