Question about Kindergarten Physical...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2006: Question about Kindergarten Physical...
By Conni on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 03:44 pm:

I have an appt to get ds Kindergarten physical in mid May. They are going to take blood and do blood work and he gets to go in a cup, etc... He also needs immunizations. So instead of doing all that in the same visit I had time to drop in this afternoon and get his shots done. (you dont need to make an appt for shots at our dr's office) They told me that he could not get his shots until after his physical? Huh? Why is that? The girl couldnt answer why for me. lol He has never had to get a physical before shots in the past?

Is this typically how they do Kindergarten physicals / immunizations? Physical first for some reason and then the shots? If not I guess I will call my doc and ask him whats up with the nurse in the shot room. :) I am kind of irritated he has to get shots and his finger pricked in the same day. ugh

Just a guess, but I would assume that the doctor needs to exam them to assure that they are free from any illness and can safely have the immunization.
Or, it may be that the nurse needs to have written orders from the doctor first.

If you find out, let us know. You have me curious, too. :)

My memory is foggy, but I believe there is a time limit/requirement involved as to when the shots are given. It never involved my kids because they both have summer birthdays and had their physicals and shots right before school started.

He is having bloodwork done maybe the shots would interfere with that.

I had my kids' 5yo shots done at the health department, since it was cheaper. I'm sure I had the physical done later. I would just call and ask why. I have no idea why it would have made any difference.

The pediatrician did it all in one day. Physical, urine, drew blood from the arm and immunizations I agree with not wanting to do it all at once,it was not pleasant for the DD.She gave her 2 needles-1 in each arm.Ugh

I just got back to this post have been getting ready for garage sale that I let the neighbor lady talk me into. Oh I am so regretting it now!

Thank you for all the replies! I am going to call my doc and our nurse in the morning. If I know my doctor like I think I do- he will get a kick out of this. lol It might have something to do with the bloodwork tho? Who knows. I will let you know what they tell me.
