Bike Trailers/Strollers

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2006: Bike Trailers/Strollers
By Heaventree on Friday, April 7, 2006 - 11:34 pm:

I'm off tomorrow to buy a bike trailer/double stroller. I want this mostly for walking and running, not sure if I'll use it with my bike or not.

I want it for a few reasons.

1. I want to start running again and with DH traveling so much I can't always get my 3 runs in a week. If I have the double stroller, I might not be able to run with it but I could get a good walk in. I hate my current double stroller.

2. We are moving to a community that has a lot of green space and people are very out door orientated. They have an incredible dog run where I would like to take my dog every day, however it is an off leash park and I would not be able to take my kids there in a regular stroller ~ too dangerous. With the bike trailer I can zip them up and not worry about strange dogs leaping into the stroller.

3. The trailers have sun protection and better weather protection than double joggers and are great for days out to the zoo and that sort of thing.

I know we had a thread running on this about a year ago, but I can't find it and I was sure someone's DH owns a bike store, but I can't remember who it is.

There are two trailers in the flyers this week on sale.

The Schwinn for $199.99 and The Little Tikes for $169.00.

The Schwinn looks like it has better construction with the frame and the wheels, however the Little Tikes has storage. Still I'm leaning towards the Schwinn. Neither store has a display set up so I can't see what I'm buying.

Does anyone have any experience with either model. Any suggestions/comments/advice?

TIA

I LOVED my Burley cart. They also have a stroller attachment for it, but we never got that! My kids loved riding in it, too. They always fell asleep.

Check with Kym, her dh owns a bike shop and can probably point you in the right direction.

I've heard wonderful things about the Burley. We're also considering getting a bike trailer (actually for our bikes), and if we do, I'm going to highly consider the Burley.

Well, I'm off to buy the Schwinn, wish I had more time to consider but there is only one left and they were just advertised yesterday. Probably trying to clear out old stock.

Haven't seen a Burley, not sure if they are sold in Canada.

I saw a beautiful one at the baby show last year but it was $500 and then you had to buy all the extras like the stroller wheel. I can't afford, nor do I want to spend that much money. The Schwinn is regularly $249 and is on sale for $199.

Thanks for the comments.

Burley Burley Burley:) I'm not sure if they are sold in Canada, they are sold through bicycle retailers, so your local bike shops would be a better bet than mass merchandiseres. We've always had one and they are great and the stroller attachment is an easy coversion from the bike attahcment. I don't have experience with other brands but have heard from customers that this is difficult with others! The wheels are also vey lightweight and built well, 5 pt harness, light weight safety bars and tinted windows:)
When it comes to items like these I usually shop for quality not price, but if price is a big issue, they are definately more expensive than 199, I think they retail for about $360.oo in our store with the strollre attachment.

Oh I just noticed you are off to buy the Shcwinn, didn't see before I posted! Sorry,

Enjoy your new toy!

Thanks Kym, I bought the Schwinn. It seems ok. It took me less than 45 minutes to put together and no tools required. Matthew helped of course and had a ball, he loves, loves, loves it! I'll post some pictures of him working on it.

I like it so far, however I assembled it in the family room not sure how I'm going to get it outside.

It folds down for easy storage, appears to be fairly good quality, will take it out for test drive tomorrow.

That's cool that Matthew had a blast helping you put it together! I would love to see the pictures!

Burleys have tinted windows now? Mine is old, so it just has clear windows. We did buy the cover for it, though, which helped keep the bugs away from the kids and had a raincover if we would have ever needed that. I think we used it a few times.
