Crockpot overheated!!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2006: Crockpot overheated!!!
By Sandysmom on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 - 02:53 pm:

We just purchased a new Rival Stainless Steel 5.5qt capacity digital crockpot, Model #5855 C. Today was the first day I've used it and I plugged it in and it immediately started smelling funny, like electrical burning. Also, almost immediately, the surface got so hot that I could not even touch it. I unplugged it and called the company and they said that that model was not recalled and it was just that particular unit. I wanted to share this in case anyone has bought this crockpot recently. I'm glad I didn't plug it in an leave. Our house could have burnt down. Be Careful!!!!

I am asking this only because I have done this did you leave any plastic in between the removable glass dish and the actual crockpot? I did this and it melted and man did it stink.

Sorry aobut this glad you didn't leave.

I made sure all the plastic was off and I even examined it thoroughly. I also examined it when it cooled off and again, I found no evidence of having left something in there. It had to be the unit because the surface got so hot so quickly that I couldn't touch it. :(

Wow, how scary!

If it's a new model, maybe it hasn't been out long enough for them to have received enough complaints to officially recall it. I would call back to the customer service dept and make sure they have a record of your complaint, and see if they can send you a replacement themselves.

That is scary! Glad you were home.

I have owned a number of crock pots and I just never felt safe enough leaving them on while I was working during the day. Call me paranoid. LOL I am just too afraid of fire.

Karen, I've left a crockpot on, when I've been gone!

I love my crockpot.I use it alot and I do leave it on and go out.I've never had a problem. My favorite meal is a stuffed pork roast. Its tender all the time.

We do have an older crockpot that is very trustworthy, but felt we needed a bigger one. I have left the house with no reserves when using our old one that is why I'm so bummed about our new one. I can't fit a whole chicken in our old one, but our new one had plenty of room. We will take it back and get another one though. BTW, you should post your stuffed pork roast recipe because it sounds scrumptious! :)

I would also love the recipe! LOL

I use my crockpot about 2-3 times a week and I always leave the house...that is the whole point of a crockpot.

I have a Rival Stainless Steel one also.

Andi, is it the one with the digital timer? Our *bad* one had the digital timer on front.

BTW, Sherri(tripletmom) also mentioned another dish on another post called "Shania Twain Potatoes" which sounds interesting as well. :)
