Remedies for canker sores??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2006: Remedies for canker sores??
By Mom2three1968 on Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 09:53 pm:

I have some pretty painful canker sores in my mouth, all underneath my tongue. I would say that i have at least five or six. Does anyone know of anything other than orajel that I can use?? The are so painful and certain foods really aggravate the sores, and also just my teeth rubbing up against the side of my tongue. Anyone have any good ideas???

Orabase. It's OTC and is a gritty paste that will stick to them and cover them while they heal.

I hate canker sores. I'll have to try to remember that stuff the next time I get one. They can be soooo painful and it seems the ones on the side of your tongue get bit all the time, because they are swollen!

I used to get these so badly and we always used Orabase. I don't get them often anymore but my dd does. I didn't even know they still made this. We swish and spit with Milk of Magnesia and Benedryl liquid every couple of hours and that really seems to help. If you get them that badly, give your doc a call. There are prescription meds they can call in for you.

There is a supplement that you can take. Lysine, you chew it up and let it bind to the sores.

thank you everyone for all the great ideas, I have lysine I will try that and also heard about the milk of magnesia, and benedryl. I want to get the orabase too...They are really sore that's for sure.

We buy bottles of Peridex from our dentist - swishing with it twice a day will eliminate bacteria and help them heal much faster. As for immediate relief of pain, we use Baby Orajel - the adult kind is not nearly strong enough to numb it.

Hello - I get canker sores alot, and what I find helps prevent them is swishing with Listerine every day - I still get them, but not as often. Also, I saw a canker sore type patch in the drug store - I think you place it on the canker sore and it stays there till it heals.
