HYPOTHYROIDISM

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: HYPOTHYROIDISM
By Mommy3girls on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 12:29 pm:

I just got a call today from my DD's Doctors office. My oldest DD Jami - 17 years old has just been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism! AT 17!!!!

We have to take her to the Buffalo's Childrens Hospital to see an Endocrinologist and they started her on levothyroxine - 75 mcg. - Im hypothyroid also and on 100 mcg so she's not far behind me.

The high end of Normal is 5.5 - thats the HIGH and her TSH was 14.20!!!!! Thats off the charts! We had no clue! I was diagnosed and didnt ever suspect I had it. 17 and she will be on medicine for the rest of her life now!

I just dont understand how a perfectly healthy - extremely active teenager gets this disease!

I think it is just genes then. The girl up the block was born with no thyroid! She will be okay. Don't worry about anything since there is nothing more to worry about. She just has to take the medicine.

Is the medicine hard to take?

I know my friend was always playing with her medicine at that age. Oh look I lost five pound by taking extra medicine. Typical thing girls do with their weight.

I guess it is hard since we believe our kids are perfect and it is hard if they have some problem. They don't deserve it!

She is bullheaded and stubborn like her Father & refuses to take the medicine!!! Her father wont take any either - not even an aspirin or cold medicine! Just suffers through. What an idiot! My husband - not daughter LOL....anyway I have to get her into the DR so they can explain what it is & how important the medicine is. She thinks she is fine & healthy - feels no symptoms - so she says Why do I need the medicine? UGH!!!! Really?? Did I raise that?!
