Jewelry I want to sell

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2008: Jewelry I want to sell
By Annie2 on Sunday, October 5, 2008 - 11:02 am:

How do I do it? Craiglist or Ebay?

My jeweler sent my diamond off to NY and Chicago with no takers. My gems are appraised at a high value but no one will buy them from me.

I need the cash, will never wear them again, what should I do to sell them?

I would try both. Just choose which one to do first. Put them up for the price you want. If it doesn't sell on one site, move it to the other.

Have you tried selling it to jewelry stores? Will your jeweler buy it from you?

Annie, are there any consignment type jewelers or jewelry repair shops that deal in pre-owned jewelry in your area? There's one outside of New Orleans that does that - they do repairs on mostly vintage or custom jewelry, and they sell pre-owned jewelry, much of it vintage (and absolutely GORGEOUS stuff! :) ).

Honestly though, I'd try running an ad in the paper - I see ads for wedding sets all the time. You will get more money for your rings if you can sell them outright. Do you have a current written appraisal? That will certainly benefit you if you try to sell it outright.

I'm not that familiar with Craigslist, but I do know people who have found great buys on big ticket items there. eBay - I am inclined to say you *probably* won't get your money's worth out of it there, although you can set a reserve - but the question to ask yourself would be *could you get more selling it elsewhere*? After all, anyone who shops on eBay and Craigslist is looking for a good bargain, so you might not get the most money for it.

Did your jeweler happen to say *why* there were no takers on your stones? And how long did he try?

We have a local jeweler here that I heard buys stuff. But mostly people take her jewelry to redo. Someone I knew took in all of her stuff from an ex and had a custom made "get over the divorce" ring..LOL. It didn't cost her anything due to how much stuff she brought in.

My diamond is appraised at the $10,ooo mark. My jeweler took it out of the setting and sent the gem itself to Chicago and NY. No one is buying gems right now, second hand because they buy their gems from DeBeers. (sp).
I also have a ruby necklace and a blue topaz necklace which I will never wear again.
I have all of this jewelry which is supposed to be an investment; according to dh, but I can not unload it.

If you do need to sell right now, I would wait. It is a hard time to get the value right now.
Ebay would be more difficult than craiglist. People want to see jewelry in person before spending thousands.
You rarely get what jewelry is appraised for. The jewelry is appraised for insurance value and that tends to be more then retail value.
For example, I have an eternity ring appraised at $5,000. My jeweler says the actual value is more like $3,500.

I need to sell my diamond, now. Dh isn't paying me crap. I guess I will put an ad in my local paper. I have a male friend that with go with me to meet a buyer. I will get the cash first before handing over the stone. I know it won't sell for the appraisal value but I will try to get the best price for it.
Thanks
