Hey Karen,

Ddil called and said that the weather is supposed to be arriving tomorrow, are you guys nervous?? Told the kids months ago to get their emergency money in order of course they did not, but that's another story, I don't have it to send to them, her mom is going to see what she can get together and wire it through Walmart. Any info that you have would be great. Thanks alot!

Kelly

Not Karen, but you can go to Weather.com and type in a city or zip code at the top to get weather conditions and forecasts for areas across the country.

Thanks Trina, I've been going to the weather bug, I just wanted to know if she heard anything locally on the news.

Nothing going on here. We're supposed to get some rain, nothing like FL. 1"-3" on the south shore of the lake....more on the north shore. Of course, it all depends on how much Fay weakens and how fast the weather moves through.....

So far, I'm not fazed by this, we get torrential rains in *normal* summer thunderstorms here....street flooding is common here.....since this area is at or below sea level, much of it depends on pumps to pump the water out of the streets, and they can only handle so much rain per hour - 1" the first hour and about 1/2" an hour after that. Anything over that will cause street flooding until the rain stops and the pumps can catch up.

Thanks Karen, whenever your in an new area it makes you worry more than you would if you were living there for a long time. Thanks for the update, I do appreciate it.

Where are the kids living? Are they in Belle Chasse?

Raining here in Pensacola, not very bad but all day. The roads here flood easily so I'm not traveling anywhere. Wind gust are mild but frequent. So far, so good :)

Today, WI had BEAUTIFUL weather for an outdoor wedding! Only when we left, about 10:30pm or so, was it starting to get a little chilly. I'd brought a shawl along and that was fine for most of the evening, on my bare arms. It was only hot, during the wedding itself, which was around 4pm. Then the sun went down and it was so comfy! (Nephew and bride.)

I know that Fay is a tropical depression now and I hope it doesn't cause too much more trouble for my southern friends.

Annie, I spoke with my sister in P'cola late yesterday afternoon - she and her friends had just spent the week doing reno/remodels on the house she just bought - and she said it was mostly windy with light rain. Her friends, however, had driven up from where they live, east of Orlando to help her and were anxious to get back home to check on THEIR house.

We are supposed to have rain all day, with flash flood watches, but that is the same as a *normal heavy rainstorm event* here.

Kelly, if you talk to your kids, just remind them that *if* they are out driving around today and get caught in one of those long, heavy downpours, not to try to drive through the water, pull over somewhere higher than the road and wait. Better yet, stay home today. That's what WE are going to do - blew off the errands, because we HATE driving in that kind of weather.

Sometimes tropical storms can do more water damage than hurricanes. What just happened in certain areas of FL is a perfect example. We were on the east side of one that hit TX 10 or so years ago, and again 15 or so years ago, and got around 24" of rain with each one of those - and they did not even officially hit here. So it really depends on how fast any weather system is moving and how severe it is, and exactly *where* it's located.

Just rain here for us all day on Sat. Nothing really heavy but constant. My sunroom leaked a bit but I put out bowls to collect the drips.
I told dd to find a ride to work and back if she wanted to go because I was not going to drive anywhere. She did.
Ds had his friend plus little brother over all day yesterday and then for a sleepover. I ordered pizza for them The driver said there was alot of water on the roads but not actual flooding.

By Karen~admin on Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 03:12 pm:

Steady light to sometimes moderate rain and some wind today, we've had MUCH worse weather than this on several occasions in the past month, not related to any tropical system.

Kelly, again, in this area, since it's coastal AND low AND mostly protected by levee systems which basically hold rainwater in, the kids should always pay attention to the news/weather and plan accordingly. You get used to dealing with heavy rains and flooded roadways down here, unfortunately, it becomes a part of life. I always say we live in the armpit of the nation. LOL

Now, when tropical systems are expected to impact us, you need to stay informed and be prepared. Local news (I prefer WWL), the Weather Channel, NOAA are all good sources. Ditto radio.

Tell your kids that during hurricane season (June 1 through Nov. 30) they should keep a battery operated radio, working flashlights, a gassed-up car, supply of bottled water and non perishable food and any Rx meds filled, *just in case*. I imagine to a newcomer to the area that sounds a little alarming, but really, it's just common sense. At least you get notice with tropical systems - it's tornados that occur within them (and in other parts of the country) that you have no control over.

Karen, they are in Algiers, I'll tell them what you've told me, my dil is getting really good at watching the weather, on Saturday they gassed up their car, went and got the water, and three months ago when i asked you all of these questions the first time they bought a large clear tupperware container to put all of their stuff in, they did however have to get the batteries, but they have a weather radio and all sorts of things, but the call often to just let me know what is going on so that I don't worry and they feel more secure going over things just in case they forgot something. They were scared out of their wits when they got caught out on the flooded roads back in May I believe it was and now when it rains they stay put. They didn't take the emergency money seriously but now they have realized that it's necessary to do so. I am glad that you are down there so that I can ask questions thank you again!

I'm 10 minutes from Algiers and the weather is clear today. Overcast, but no rain. We might get some rain tonight but it's not supposed to be heavy. Tell them to have their important papers (insurance policies, birth certificates, banking info., etc.) in one spot to grab if they have to evacuate at some point this hurricane season.
