How late do your dks stay up in the summer?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: How late do your dks stay up in the summer?
By Debbie on Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 12:04 am:

Twice this last week the neighborhood kids have come to our door after 9pm to see if my dks can come out and play. I think this is way too late, even in summer. Also, it is getting dark, and I don't let my dks run around the neighborhood after dark. Besides, my dks are getting ready for bed at this time. They are 10 and 8. They take showers at 9pm, have a snack, then read, and they are asleep no later then 10pm. When they have had a really busy day, we push it up 30 minutes, and they are asleep by 9:30.

I am friends with the mom of one of the boys, so I am calling her tomorrow, so her son will stop coming over that late. My oldest has a fit when he can't go out, he thinks it is unfair.

So what time do your dks go to bed??

Mine, 11 and 14, are generally in bed by 10--definitely on the weekdays, maybe a little bit later on the weekend depending on what is going on. They are in from playing with friends by 9, except sometimes my 14 y/o can stay out a little later depending on who he is with and what he is doing. My 14 y/o works out 2 hours every day with a summer school program (weights and speed drill running), bikes all over town with his friends, and skateboards. He's exhausted and ready for bed!

My kids do stay up later in the summer, but they are not outside playing after dark.I would be suprised if a child came to my door at 9pm. Even though my son is going to be 14, nobody comes to the house that late.

My kids are allowed to stay up till 11:00 during the summer since I don't work during the summer and they don't have to get up early. If I worked, and they had to get up the next morning, they would have to go to bed earlier.

We live out in the country, so they can play till about 9:00 or 9:30 outside if they want, but I wouldn't let them go to a neighbor's house or anything. Most of the time, they are played out by then, and are inside.

I am respectful of others. I don't let them call friends before 10:00 in the morning, and I only let them call friends after 8:30 if it is the ones I know the parents, and they don't mind. And then it is only up till 9:00.

By the way, mine will by 9 and 12 next month...

My kids do not have a set bedtime in the summer. They are a bit older though. 17,14,12 and 11. As long as they do not have any plans in the am they can stay up as late as they want; most nights. They do tend to put themselves to bed around 11 pm. They may stay up to read or watch a movie but generally fall asleep fairly quickly. Some nights I tell them to go to their rooms but not very often. They tend to sleep until 11:00 am, which gives me quiet time in the am, so I don't mind if they stay up. However if I go to bed before them they can not use the family computer, which is in the livingroom.
The kids can go out to play after dark if the neighborhood kids are playing "man hunt" ie: hide and seek. We live on a street between two cul-de-sacs, there are about ten kids in the neighborhood around the age of 12. I know them all and the parents also.

On Friday night DH and I were finishing up some gardening in front of the house at 10pm and we saw quite a few of Kaitlyn's 5-6 year old friends still playing outside. I was amazed. Both my kids were already in bed. I think my kids are still at the age where they need a structured bed time or they will make me miserable the next day. LOL I imagine when they are older they will come in when it gets dark.

My kids are 10 and almost 12. Bed time is 10:00 during the summer, but I'm OK if they're up later if something special is going on. They don't play outside past 8 or 9. It starts to get dark then, but also the bugs are atrocious.

By Breann on Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 03:50 pm:

We usually send them to bed just after 9 or so. If we are all outside, they end up being up a bit later.

By Bellajoe on Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 04:27 pm:

THey stay up till 9:30-10:00, but usually we get them to get in bed by 9:30. They are inside by 9:00 though. They are 7 and 9.

Mine is 7 and he's generally in bed by 10:00-10:30... He starts summer school next week for three weeks and he'll be in bed by 9:00.

My kids are 18 and 16. A lot of nights, I'm in bed, before they are. LOL!

By Tink on Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 11:18 pm:

My kids are 11, 9 and 7 and they are in bed around 9 most nights. My kids don't sleep in no matter how late they stay up so things are miserable around here if they stay up late too many nights in a row. Of course, we let them stay up later if there is something going on or we have friends over. They don't play outside with the neighbor kids since we live on a semi-busy street but if they are in the backyard, they head in around 8.

Mine just went to bed but their cousins and aunt were here. Should have made it a sleepover lol! They come inside before dark but they aren't out on their own. Mine are 9,8 and 4. Friends hasn't been an issue yet.

By Brandy on Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 11:49 pm:

as late as they want but in the house by dark time...

By Rayanne on Monday, June 30, 2008 - 08:17 am:

Rylee goes to bed between 9:00 & 9:30, and when school starts she will be in bed no later than 8:30. No matter what time she goes to bed though, she wakes up every morning at 7:00/7:30. My child will not sleep in!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR

By Kaye on Monday, June 30, 2008 - 08:50 am:

Mine are 14,12 and 10. If we are doing nothing then we send them to bed around 10. I don't let them run the streets often. If they are out playing with friends, we are inside by 10 unless something specific is going on. Like if a neighbor is having a party for all of us. Typically when the kids are all outside, the adults are too. It is light here until nearly 8:30 now. My kids will sleep until woken up or noon which ever is first. So I just don't mind them staying up.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, June 30, 2008 - 11:45 am:

My kids aren't ever running the streets. There is no one their age around us, to hang out with. LOL! They would be in by dark, anyway. Sometimes, they are out walking the dog, as the sun goes down, because Jasmine tolerates the temperature much better then. She is black and walking in the afternoon, on a warm day, is hard on her.
