What do I do with an car seat?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2008: What do I do with an car seat?
By Jjb on Saturday, June 7, 2008 - 09:41 pm:

I haven't posted in a long time. We're in the process of cleaning things out of our house and I have two Britax Roundabout car seats we no longer use. They are 6 and 8 years old, but in good shape. I've tried to consign them and bring them to goodwill but no one will take them since they're older. I hate to put them in a landfill especially since they work well and I know there are many kids who should be riding in a car seat but aren't. Do you have any idea who may take them?

I typed this quickly and realized that the grammar is pretty poor with the title- sorry!

Car seats expire 6 yrs. after the date of manufacture. Most consignment shops will not take used or expired car seats due to liability issues. Either destroy them so that no one can use them OR donate them to a Car Seat Inspection Station in your area.
SeatCheck.org

They will either destroy them or use them to train new Child Passenger Safety Technicians how to install car seats.

Used Seat Check List

I love the idea of donating for seat check practice. I hated destroying my perfectly nice looking Britax. Our local seat tech said to write "DAMAGED, NOT USABLE" all over the seat when you throw it away so that passer bys don't pull it from the trash to use for themselves. And remove the straps as well and toss so the seat cant be easily reused.

Thank you Trina! What a great idea.
