Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2008: Wow - Breakdown of Amazon .com refund after a return - beware!! They will get you!

I can't believe this breakdown of a refund when I returned something to Amazon.com I knew about the shipping - and I was prepared to eat it, although I didn't expect that to be so high, either. But there was no mention of a "restocking" fee! I got back $1.11 for a book I paid $10.20 for!!!!
I'd have been better off donating the book to my library!
Read the fine print!
Ame

following is the breakdown of your expected refund:
Item(s) Returned:
1 "Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Integration Issues"
Reason: I accidentally ordered the wrong item
Item Details:
Price $10.20
Shipping $0.99
Shipping Discount* $-0.99
Restocking Fee $-5.10

Prepaid Return Label Deduction $-3.99

Total: $1.11

Since you used a pre-paid mailing label to return item(s) for reasons which were not the result of our error, the cost of return shipping has been deducted from your refund.

OMG! That's ridiculous.

That is definitely unfortunate, but since Amazon is just a bunch of warehouses located all over the country, I can see why a restocking fee would be high... It now has to make its way back to to whatever warehouse it came from I assume. I am assuming all returns go to a central processing center and then get shipped back to warehouses. I could be wrong though. And if I'm right, that's probably also why the return ship charge was so high....now they have to in turn ship it to the warehouse.

Thanks for the alert!

Wow, I'm really surprised, I ordered the wrong book and it had all ready shipped but not arrived, I was persistent on the phone and had to call a couple of times but they credited me for the book and because shipping to return the book was too high they did not ask for it to be returned. Basically even though it was my error they sent me the book for free.

I had a great experience with them, I think it's worth a phone call to dispute the charges and see what they say.
