My DS Totalled His Car Today

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2008: My DS Totalled His Car Today
By Hol on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 03:17 am:

He is okay, thank the Lord, and so is the other person. However, now we have the hassle of police reports, finding another car with the limited money that he has to spend, etc.

Mike has had his license since September. We made him wait until he was almost nineteen. To his credit, he works and saved enough money to buy a little car. A local person had it on their lawn for $2200.00. It was a 1993 Honda Civic. It was high mileage but with a few minor repairs, it ran like a champ. It had new tires on it and passed state inspection. He paid cash for it and only carried liability insurance on it because of the age of the car.

DH and I have spoken to him on numerous occassions about not making unnessecary trips, both because of the cost of gas, and everytime you go out, you increase your odds of an accident. The novelty of driving was still new to him, so he looked for excuses to go out. He and my other DS work in the same place, so he was the transportation for both of them, since Shawn doesn't drive.

I no sooner got to work today and I got a call from Mike with the news. The police were there. He had gone to a coffee shop for breakfast, and when he was making a left out of the parking lot, he pulled out into traffic and didn't see this black van coming until it was too late. It was raining and it IS a very bad spot to make a left out of. I will take a right, go down the road, and turn around in the local gas station. I don't attempt a left turn out of there.

The car was towed. Both he and the other driver refused transport to the emergency room. Then when the other man's wife arrived, she saw a small gash on the back of his head. I guess it was a work van and he had pipes and tools in the back, and something hit him in the back of the head, so she drove him to the hospital for stitches. Mike asked the police if they would drop him at work, which they did. However, I felt so queasy and couldn't concentrate at work, so I left and got him and brought him back to the hospital where I work to have him checked at the ER. I had to see for myself that he was alright. He is fine. I don't know how the other man is tonight.

The car was towed to a garage that charges $24.00 a day to store it, so we have to find a salvage yard to take it off our hands in the next couple of days. DH didn't want it towed to our property because he said that it could be leaking fluids, and he didn't want it getting in our ground water. (We have a well).

Hopefully, he has learned that his parents aren't totally stupid, and that our advise should be heeded. Wish us luck as we now start the hunt for another $2000.00 car. The main thing is that it COULD have been way worse. I am most grateful for that.

I am so glad that he wasn't hurt!! My dd will be sixteen in October and she is so anxious to drive! I'd just as soon continue to drive her around rather than worry about her being on the roads. Again, I'm glad that your ds is alright!!

As you said, things definitely could be worse. Doesn't make it easier to deal with it now, though. I'm so thankful he and the other person are okay. It would have been a heavy burden if the other person would have been hurt. I'm glad he doesn't have to deal with that. And I'm sure this will be an important lesson to him that may end up saving his life down the road. All things happen for a reason.
