By Brandy on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 07:52 am:

in 2 more days i'm going to be getting on a plane i've never been in one before help me out here girls = ) thanks Brandy

By Jackie on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 08:12 am:

It will be fine. I love to fly. After driving long distances, Id take flying any day.

By Luvn29 on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 08:15 am:

You're not alone, Brandy. I've never flown in a "real" plane and am scared to death of it! However, I plan on flying to Hawaii one of these days, so I'd better get used to the idea!

I've been on a small plane before at an air show. It took us around the county and I loved it! I bet once you're off the ground you'll find it fascinating!b

By Kaye on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 08:44 am:

I actually hate to fly, but do it pretty regularly. First dress comfy, but what will get through security. It is a hassle to have to debelt, etc. You will have to take your shoes off, be prepared, I wear slip ons :).

On the plane itself, I found that I bring a bottle of water that I sip on to keep me a little busy. Something to read, like a readers digest, I can't ever fully concentrate, but a short story works. And for me, I take off my shoes, something about being barefoot makes me feel more connected...kind of weird, but I never wear shoes at home.

Anyway, if the flight there is bad, drink before you head home :)

Oh they do sell alcohol on board, but you need cash, but take it easy, altitude does affect how it works.

By Bellajoe on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 09:09 am:

Bring some gum to chew in case the air pressure change bothers your ears, chewing gum helps.

Little tip for ya: Don't drink water or eat the ice from the plane, they don't clean the water container(or whereever they get it from) so there are tons of bacteria you could be drinking. I always ask for my drinks with no ice. My SIL told me this. She used to travel quite a bit for work. She always got sick while traveling. Once she heard the news story about the water and ice on planes, she started telling the flight attendent "no ice" and she hasn't got sick while traveling since. :)

Bring your ipod if you have one. We downloaded one of the LOST episodes to watch on our iPod on the way to Vegas. That killed an hour of the flight which was nice. If you can do that it would keep your mind off the flight. Also some planes now show movies or sitcoms on the flight. If you have headphones they might work, or else you can buy them for a dollar on the flight.

Dress comfy like Kaye said.

I find that taking off and landing are more nerve wrecking, the flying part is fine. After a few flights, the taking off and landing are actually kind of fun. :)

Remember, you can't bring water or any liquid thru security. If you are bringing a carry on and have your shampoo and stuff in it, they must be in a 1 Quart plastic baggie.
Where are you going??

Airport rules

By Karen~admin on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 09:24 am:

I used to be terrified of flying, but I'm fine with it now, and you will be too. Wear comfy clothing. You CAN purchase food/drink to bring on the plane once you have gone through security.

Ditto bringing the Ipod - or a good book to read.

Make sure you have your photo ID with you, you will need it.

Check in/print your boarding pass online @ home before you go, if possible.

Wear slip-on shoes or sandals if possible, because you WILL have to take them off to go through security.

The one quart Ziploc bag rule applies - but you cannot have any liquid/gel/aerosol containers that are larger than 3 ounces in it. They will make you throw it away if you do.

Where are you going and how long is your flight?

By Jtsmom on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 09:40 am:

I don't like to fly either, but when I think about it most of the time it feels just like you are riding in a car. I have never had any horrible turbalance yet, but either way, it sure beats driving!! We just drove 15 hours to Oklahoma and it would have only taken 2 in the plane!!

By Conni on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 10:10 am:

I have flown several times now... It's not bad. Getting through the aiport is the pitb, imo. lol How long is yours flight? If it's several hours, they'll play a movie for you and feed you some lovely garbage. haha If it's short flight, don't worry, you'll be FINE!!! :)

By Conni on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 10:10 am:

hmmm, I typed 2WPM and had 20 incorrect woords just now, I think. HAHA

By Brandy on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 10:36 am:

By Boxzgrl on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 10:50 am:

I've flown twice. Once in the summer of 1998 going with my Grandpa from CA to WA so the flight wasn't long and I was 15 at the time so I thought it was fun. The second time was this last holiday season. My first flight as as adult AND with 2 kids! LOL I was very worried up until the day of the flight and in all honesty until the flight was at full altitude after take off. I realized I got myself worked up over nothing. The flight home was a breeze as far as being worried but the last hour of the flight we had the worst turbulence and I hated it! The one thing I read that helped A LOT though is that when you hit patches of turbulence or feel that "something isn't right", see how others are reacting around you. Chances are they've flown a lot and would spot something wrong better than you. That advice calmed my nerves a lot.

By Luvn29 on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 01:17 pm:

LOST episode??? Hahahahahaha!!!

She's already afraid of flying. That one just cracked me up...remember how they ended up on the island? LOL!

By Bellajoe on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 02:16 pm:

OMG I"M SORRY. I didn't even THINK of that!!!!!!
I had flown plenty of times, and didn't watch the plane crash scene while we were on the plane.
:)

Download "Friends" or something. That's much safer. tee hee.:)

I don't mind flying. The airports are what causes me the most issues.

Brandy, start a list (cell phone, chargers etc) and keep adding to it as things come to mind. Then when you go to pack you can check things off as you bag them up. Each kid gets a list of required packing (clothing etc.), which they in turn add to, and then I go back through their bags to double check everything. Makes packing things much easier when you don't have to try and remember what you had meant to pack a week ago. Giving the kids list also helps to shorten the time it takes me to pack.

I want to come. Have a great time, I am sure the flight will be nothing but a thing.

By Brandy on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 02:51 pm:

my kids will be in school = ) i'm going with just my mom and don't be upset anyone at me for not taking the kids they already went with her and my dad about 3 or so years ago = )

By Bobbie~moderatr on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 03:31 pm:

Upset?? are you kidding me? I would go in a heart beat.... Kids? What kids? The flight will be fine...

By Brandy on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 03:48 pm:

= ) lol Bobbie = )

By Tayjar on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 03:55 pm:

I always take my laptop and watch a movie. I take a snack and drink, too. I buy these after I check in. the flight will be fine. The airport is the scary part of traveling.

By Yjja123 on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 05:01 pm:

I hate flying too and will be going to Hawaii next month
:( It will be my longest flight ever.
I plan on taking:
a few books
Portable DVD player
Ipod
Snacks
And... the biggie :) SLEEPING PILLS :)

Have a great time on your trip!

By Karen~admin on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 09:56 pm:

Brandy, have a GREAT time!!!!

Yvonne, I hear ya on the sleeping pills! LOL I plan to do the same thing when/if *I* ever fly to Hawaii, or especially to Australia, which is one of my *dream* places to go!

By Brandy on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 11:41 pm:

thanks again everyone...i plan to have a wonderful time = ) there is a camera i have my eye on Karen if you can imagine that lol it's a kodak 12 mp 5x opitcal zoom...i'm going to look further into it tomorrow... = ) yay...

By Crystal915 on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 05:10 pm:

I also go for the sleeping pills on long flights, like to Hawaii, but for in continent flights that wouldn't help. Can you ask your doc for a Valium or something before you fly? I know a lot of ppl do that. Honestly, it's no big deal, just take some music, a good book, whatever calms you. Have FUN!!!!!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 05:13 pm:

Have fun, Brandy!

pen/paper is fine

By Happynerdmom on Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 08:17 pm:

You'll be fine, Brandy! Have fun!! I've done lots of long plane trips, the longest ones being to Asia and back, which also included my then 2-year-old, and five-year-old!:)
