Wonder why you're tired? According to study, husbands create extra 7 hours weekly housework

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2008: Wonder why you're tired? According to study, husbands create extra 7 hours weekly housework

Read this article in Rueters: housework

According to the study, "having a husband creates an extra seven hours of extra housework for women. But a wife saves her husband from an hour of chores around the house each week."

".. single women did the least amount of housework, at about 12 hours a week. Married women in their 60s and 70s did nearly twice that amount, while women with more than three children spent 28 hours a week cleaning, cooking and washing."

How true, how true!

I will tell you, just last night! Made a nice Sunday dinner, ate with my family, cleaned the whole kitchen, loaded the dishwasher, washed the pans and put the away... my kitchen and dining room were spotless when I went to bed!!! When I got up this morning, IT WASN'T! My DH, after I had gone to bed, decided to make himself a sandwich and read the Sunday paper! The paper was all over the dining room table, WITH the dish, napkin and glass from his sandwich. Then, the kitchen!!! HOW do you make a complete mess in a kitchen making one tuna salad sandwich?? My DH can! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

By Amecmom on Monday, April 7, 2008 - 10:37 am:

He left a stinky tuna salad dish out all night! YUCK! :)
I have to say that you can't tar all husbands with the same brush! My husband puts his stuff away, cleans up after himself and helps with the kids. He can't stand to see a dish in the sink so it needs to be washed or put in the dishwasher right away. I don't think I have extra housework because of a husband.
I also don't think it is gender dependent, but rather just how you were brought up and how generally neat and clean you are.

My dh sounds like yours Angellew. A bowl of cereal or a sandwich for a midnight snack tarnishes what I do before I go to bed! Then sometimes he decides it is time to get on everyone's case to clean up, usually when I'm preoccupied with schoolwork or the like.

By Angellew on Monday, April 7, 2008 - 02:11 pm:

Dish out.. Yes! Stinky... NO! The cat thought he hit the lottery last night, cause anything that may have been on the plate was licked clean!!!

I can't say the same for the kitchen though. I can tell you what he ate just following the trail! Bread crumbs on the counter, salt, pepper and garlic powder on the cutting board with the tell-tale bread-shaped "blank spot"! Smudges of mayo on said cutting board, but the mayo knife WAS in the sink!!! Drops of milk on the counter! Hence... tuna sandwich and a glass of milk!

He HATES when I do that! Once, I found one oat in the bed! He had really tried to clean up that one time, and I found ONE OAT! LOL!

My hubby was working in the kitchen this morning. He scrubbed the cake pan clean, that didn't get clean in the dishwasher. He even came down to my computer desk and got the dirty dishes that I forgot to bring up, although, he missed the dirty mug. LOL! So, he was fixing messes, not creating them!

My hubby is like Dawn's. He will clean up after himself and others. He is often doing our chores for us.

Some of you lucked out in the clean hubby department! I'm sure my dh makes enough mess for me to make up for the deficit your dh leaves. He's a slob and manages to dirty at least three rooms each night after work, which is after I've gone to bed. He just doesn't seem to understand how frustrating it is to go to bed with a clean house and wake up each day with more mess to take care of.

Since the deployment, I definitely noticed that my DH helps with Connor a lot, but the messes have increased...cup rings, dishes, tracking in dirt, but by far it's the laundry and messy bathrooms that take the cake because it's like pulling teeth to get him to help in that arena and it's a lot messier when he's around! LOL

Although, with our new and permanent house, he's vowed to take care of our lawn which is a nice change. He's already aerated and fertilized which he rarely did in our last houses! I also need to get him a tool belt because he's become a lot more handy and I think those are sooooo sexy!! (Shirtless, muscular husband + tool belt= hello!)

By Reds9298 on Monday, April 7, 2008 - 06:33 pm:

Heidi, ROFL about your tool belt comment. Amen sister! :)

Ditto Ame And Dawn - same here. I can't say I've ever really cleaned up after my DH, so they all can't be lumped together. He's very tidy and always picks up after himself. He puts his dishes in the dishwasher after meals, laundry away, dirty laundry goes in the hamper and not the floor, etc. He's really great about that. Nat also picks up most of her things herself, which has been a training in progress for a nearly 4 year old, but she does well. I think some of that is just genes - she got the tidy and organized genes from both of us. :)

DH's aggravation for me is that he doesn't turn off lights when he leaves a room. It drives me NUTS! So I do find that I follow behind him turning off lights, but if that's my biggest concern, I'm doing alright. :)

I'm not sure if middle-aged hubby would look so sexy shirtless, with a tool belt. LOL! Besides, he's really not one to be shirtless, in the first place. With freckles and red hair, he is much better off staying covered, to prevent sunburn!

Although hubby in his new jacket, that he got on sale for $20 (normally about $100!), that's a different matter altogether! I'm not sure what it is about the jacket, but he sure looks hot!

Hubby and lights? Argh! You'd think since he is the one paying the electric bill, that he'd be more careful, but I'm way more obsessed about lights being off than he is.

Well, here's a shocker...my dh doesn't agree with the study. I didn't pursue the conversation any further. lol

DH is a big help too. I noticed it mainly after he deployed. I probably ENDED UP with 7 hours of extra work. LOL I can't wait until this is over so I have my toilet scrubber and dish washer back. ;)
