My Daughter Was Exposed To Lice

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2008: My Daughter Was Exposed To Lice
By Shellyg on Thursday, April 3, 2008 - 10:49 pm:

A little girl on her team has lice. All the girls share the catchers helmet when they play Catcher. My daughter and this other little girl are the main catchers. Is there anything preventitive that I can use? The Mom of the other little girl sprayed the helmet with some lice stuff. Ewww, I am really grossed out!

yuck - the mother knowing her dd has headlice let the kids share the helmet? That's just gross.

Try pure tea tree oil. A few drops, rub it in your hands and smooth it over dd's head. It has a strong smell, but it works.

Is the coach aware this other child has lice??? And they still allow her to use the helmet??? UGH

Is this something they found out? OR did they know she had it when they played?

Tea tree seems to work well, you can get it at Walmart and any pharmacy. Anything that makes the shaft of the hair "dirty", (hair products), seem to help too. Some people swear by the VO5 with tea tree in it. I have so been there by the way, it doesn't matter where you live, or how clean you think you are/try to be, it happens.

Good luck!!

I know it's not feasible for everyone, but when mine still played summer rec I always bought my kids their own helmets, even catchers and allowed no one but them to use them. I figure the cost of treating head lice is equal to the price of a helmet. they lasted for more than one season as their heads don't usually grow that much from each season.

Mine both play travel ball and it's pretty much understood at this level that you use only your own equipment. No one shares bats, gloves, or helmets.

Lice went around my ds's class, but he never got it. I swear it was the pomade that I use in his hair each morning. From what I understand, lice like nice clean hair. So, if there is product in it, that helps.

I hope your dd doesn't get it. And, I would stop sharing the catchers helmet until you know everybody else is all clear.

Is there a way you can get your dd her own catchers mask/helmet? My dh coaches, and we have 2 catchers. Dh has the other gear, but they both have their own head gear.

My kids wear their own helmets. When the coach tried to insist they share, I refused. I even went and had them airbrushed with their names. Problem solved, no one wants to wear a helmet with someone elses name on it.
You can get them at Target or Walmart.
If you discover she has lice PLEASE try the non chemical approaches first. My daughter almost lost her eyesight from one of the products!

I was told to wash your hair with salt as well. The salt dries the nits and also helps scrap them from the shafts of hair.
