My sister is getting her son a PS2 for Christmas so she has mailed her old PS to us. We know NOTHING about this stuff. Can you still buy accessories (like joysticks) and games for the original PS?

By Yjja123 on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 09:00 pm:

Yes! Target has a lot of them.

By Paulas on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 09:10 pm:

Thanks!

Can you play the new PS2 games in the older systems?

By Yjja123 on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 09:14 pm:

I do not think so.

By Vicki on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 09:36 pm:

From what I understand, you can't play newer games than your system. A new system can play both old and new games, but a old system can only play old games.

By Kaye on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:31 pm:

But you can buy PS1 games at places like game stop, EB games and blockbuster. You get a much better price on them that way!

By Brandy on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:37 pm:

I have a question also sorry Paula for asking on your thread but are there any Playstation 2 games that are more kid oriented ? if you could send me somewhere that has them lol = ) thanks Brandy

By Boxzgrl on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:46 pm:

Does your sister know that a 3rd Playstation will be coming out very soon?

By Yjja123 on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:49 pm:

When I did a check on ebay some Authur games and Monopoly also came up.

I'm not sure if she knows about the PS3 or not.

By Brandy on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 06:25 am:

Thanks Yjja = ) and Paula also = ) The thing is with the playstation 3 coming out it's electronics something better is going to always be coming out every year the retail industry knows what they are doing the know the kids will have to "need" the newest ones so that's why they make them available although my kids are just now getting the "old" playstation two this year for christmas but only because i purchased it for an awesome price..The playstations and stuff are just like the game boy then what game boy advance and then sp and now the nintendo ds well my kids have the game boy advance and i asked them both the other day hey do you want the ds next year and that's it for christmas and they both said yes so we will see lol = ) sorry for rambling = )

Even if the PS3 is coming out soon I still think that it is fine to buy a PS2. We love ours and honestly there are 1000's of games out there. Even after the PS3 comes out there will still be plenty of PS2 games I will be interested in purchasing and playing, and they will probably be cheaper to buy off ebay. By the time I run out of games I want to play on the PS2 the PS3 will probably be cheaper just like what happened with the PS2. I have to give a standing ovation to Sony tho making the games still runnable in later additions of the PS. It would have been very easy for them to make the new platforms not run the old games.

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 11:21 am:

The "new" playstation is not a PS3 right now... it's a slimmer version of the PS2. I'm willing to bet that since they JUST released the Slim it's going to be quite a while until 3 is out here. ALL PS2s can play the old (purple backed) and new (silver backed) games, plus DVDs. Some games for kids... Cool Boarders, Tony Hawk's skating games, Madden football games (the 2005 is down to 20 bucks at Wal-mart.) The new Lemony Snicket game, NASCAR games, NBA 2K5, all the NCAA sports games, Jax and Dexter (I think that's the name of it), Crash Bandicoot, plus all the cartoon character ones mentioned earlier.

I just checked on PS3... it's not even going to be released in Japan until Spring 2006... though it should be interesting to see what Sony comes up with!

By Boxzgrl on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 12:03 pm:

Glad you checked that Crys, DH bought a PS2 a few months ago and the saleslady tried to talk us out of it and preordering the newer Playstation (which we didnt even know about at that time). So the only difference is its slimmer? Arent they slim enough?? lol!

Paula, if I had the guts i'd pack up DHs PS2 and ship it off to you while he's at work, i'm sick of sharing DH with Tony Hawk and Pro Baseball 2005! :) I did marry a Marine so I guess I should be happy that he didn't buy XBox because I would then hate Halo 2!!!!

By Paulas on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

LOL Melissa...you could just send me the controllers! LOL

Talked to my sister today and she was aware that a newer version is coming out but refuses to pay the price that it will be. She bought my nephew a XBox last year for almost $600 but he wants some XBox games and some PS2 games so that's why she is buying him the PS2 this year for Christmas. And in case you are wondering...yes, he is a little spoiled! :)

Another question: do the controllers for PS2 fit the PS1? I'm assuming they do since my nephew has kept the controllers. I saw some used ones on ebay so maybe I'll bid on those.

Right now I am the high bidder for:
Bear in the Big Blue House
Goofy
Skrek

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 03:49 pm:

Yes, they fit, and there is a Dualshock controller Sony makes. The Dualshock 1 is made for PS1, but works just fine in the PS2, but is half the price of the Dualshock2 @ Wal-Mart. It'll probably cost you more to buy them on Ebay than it will to buy the $10 Dualshock1 at Wal-Mart. (I only know all this junk because Nate got a PS2 as an Xmas gift from me. I refused to spend 2X as much to get a "slimmer" one, which you can't find in stores anywhere, so I bought a used one, and spent the money I saved on games.)

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 03:51 pm:

Oh, duh... I was all confused... you are getting an Original PS, not the 2!! Silly me, disregard last post! New controllers for PS1 are available at Wal-Mart... :)

By Missmudd on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 05:33 pm:

I personally would buy the 'real" ps controllers. I have bought the cheepos and they dont last near as long. The original ps controllers that we bought 2 years ago only just died but the generic ones that we bought have not lasted near as long.

PaulaS - You can go to www.ebgames.com and either order online or find a local store. They carry tons of used games for new and older gaming systems. If you have a local buy and sell paper they often have ads from people trying to clear out their old games to make money so they can upgrade to the newest game system. Also try pawn shops and such.

For info on what to buy check out some back issues of EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) at your local library... or try this link http://egm.1up.com/do/sortIndex?ct=REVIEW

By Paulas on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 - 01:16 pm:

wow..thank you all so much. There is a local eb games ( about an hour away ) so I will check it out the next time we are in Grande Prairie.

By Paulas on Thursday, December 23, 2004 - 12:58 am:

So, my sister's package arrives today with the playstation in it. It's just the playstation and no cables, controllers..nothing! I call her up and she said the cables attaching the Playstation to the TV my nephew uses with his XBox, the controllers he kept (which I knew) and she forgot to mail the power cord (will send it later).

Meanwhile...I've won two ebay auctions so my kids could play the silly thing. So, I've bid on a Playstation:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8156215294&ssPageName=ADME:B:BN:CA:1

check it out. I figure this is a better deal than buying the controllers and cables

By Feona on Thursday, December 23, 2004 - 06:53 am:

Oh goodness. That is a good deal. Now you need a lot of playstation games

I search for

lot playstation games

What every number it is.

By Missmudd on Thursday, December 23, 2004 - 10:59 am:

Just as a word of warning, I looked at the auction you are bidding on. Have you asked the seller how much to ship? I dont see that anywhere in the auction and they could decide to charge a crazy amount for shipping. I would contact the seller right away and figure that out.

By Paulas on Thursday, December 23, 2004 - 12:55 pm:

Thanks Kristin. I emailed him for a shipping amount. I'm hoping that since we are both in Canada it won't be too bad.

By Mommmie on Thursday, December 23, 2004 - 01:18 pm:

You might call the EB Games that is near you and see if they are selling any used PS game consoles. If so they should be super cheap. Our Gamestop sells used systems, but I don't know of EB Games does. If they sell them, they should come with controllers.

By Paulas on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 01:59 am:

Checked out Toyz store that sells used stuff. Ouch!

used controllers $15 each
power code $7
cable $10

Think I'll check ebay and EB games
