Is there a way to find this out?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2004: Is there a way to find this out?

To find a persons name by their vehicle license plate number? DHs friend is being accused of stealing a trailer he bought a while ago and the guy is threatening to take him to civil court but wont tell us his name and the military police couldnt either. We have his license plate number. Is it possible to find his name?

I would think it is possible, but you would have to go through the police to do so...when you get pulled over how do they know who the vehicle is registered to (for sure) if they can't get your Name by the license plate number? you know? Maybe someone knows more than I do but just throwing my 2 cents in. :)

Contact vehicle registration, I don't know if they would release it to you, but they will certainly have it. Honestly though, I wouldn't stress it too much, because if the guy is seriously pursuing it, his name will be on the court documents. And if he caught wind of your friend going out of his way to find out his name, he could try and say your friend is harassing/retaliating against him. The accuser sounds like a shady person, if he won't give up his name. It may be wise to just wait him out, and call his bluff.

Does your friend have a bill of sale? Does he have contact with the person that sold it to him? Just to be on the safe side, I would tell him to give his SSGT a heads up. I know Dave is more likely to go the extra mile for his Marine if he knows in advance what is going on.

In texas this is easy to check! You go to wher eyou renew your plates and you tell them you want to trace plates. You have to sign the document and pay 5 dollars. You need the plate and the behicle info (like it is a ford taurus). They will run it and hand it to you. The only kicker is, your name does stay on the request, plus you have to fill out a questionaire on why you want to know, pretty simply one has to do with legal issues.

Does he have a receipt? If so, doesn't that have the guys info on it? If not, and he paid in cash, I have a feeling this could get ugly!!

Yes, you can find a persons name and address by their license plate number.

I agree, if your dh's friend has a receipt, canceled check or any other proof, don't worry about it, but give his SSGT a heads up. If he doesn't have proof, he should contact the person he bought it from and get proof, like a written statement, (unless this is the person threatening to sue him), or get in touch with any witnesses to the transaction and get written statements from them, and definitely give his SSGT a heads up.

There are a lot of issues associated with trying to trace someone by a vehicle tag, and most states are much tighter on privacy issues than they were in the past. I'd let that go. If any legal action actually takes place, the guy will be outed anyhow, and if it doesn't, it doesn't matter.

It sounds like a potential scam or con to me also.
