Men simply do not know how to be sick

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2004: Men simply do not know how to be sick
By Ginny~moderator on Monday, November 29, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

My dear son was sick in bed all day Saturday and Sunday - low grade temp, body aches, general feeling of lousy, low appetite. But, of course, he had to go to work today because there were too many things to do, even though he has about 50 sick days piled up. So, they sent him home at 2 because he was sick. And he expects go to to work tomorrow.

MEN!

I know you probably can't tell him, but he needs to stay home, so he can rest and get better.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, November 29, 2004 - 08:01 pm:

Oh, I can tell him, and I've told him. But, like most men, in one ear and ......

They don't think that "real men" ever get sick. I mean, can you imagine John Wayne with the runsies? LOL (I didn't think so)

Wow! Some one clue my dh in because he is the worst when he is sick! I would rather take care of all 3 dks while they are puking up their guts than him doing the same! The whining...and moaning...and the fact that he always manages to get sick the day after me and it's always worse than anything I have! Luckily, he's not sick very often. He must just save it up until he can do it *really well*!

Ginny, men don't know how to do much of anything. Can you tell my dh isn't being so "dear" right now??? Hope Scott's feeling better soon.

My hubby's a HUGE whiner, like the rest of the male race!! Everything is SO MUCH WORSE on him! I have been sick with a chest thing for weeks, as have the kids. Life went on, and I nursed them and myself back to health. Nothing was put on hold because I was sick. Now he has a bit of it, and you'd think the world was ending. GEESH!!

Ginny, DH is a baby when he is sick. He would still go to work (even when throwing up) but once he walked in the door out came the baby. I get sick and I am holding my self up with everything I have to get what I have to get done done. He gets sick and the world stops.... My son is the very same way. The girls will stay in bed and I have to ask them if they need anything. He is sick and I am running about for him all day... MEN!!!

Fortunately, Scott is like me - when we are sick we want to be left strictly alone unless we ask for some particular thing. Now, my ex wanted everyone to hover over him, rub his back, soothe his forehead, fluff his pillows, offer juice, soup, etc. It was quite interesting - when I was sick he hovered and when he was sick I left him alone. We didn't communicate very well.

What drives me nuts with DH is his daily "play-by-play" on how his illness is doing. It's details I don't really care about and he always says he's getting better, even when you can plainly hear that he isn't quite better yet. He is very noisy when he has a gunky throat! Ugh!

By Debbie on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 - 11:54 am:

Ginny, he sounds just like my dh. He was sick over Thanksgiving. I asked him to please see the doctor yesterday. He insisted that he had to much work and too many meetings. I couldn't believe he was actully going to work. Well, he ended up going to the doctor yesterday afternoon after his assistant begged him to go and quit coughing all over her. He has the bronchitis that I have had for the last few months. The doctor told him to stay home for at least a few days. Do you think he listened?? He is at work as I type this. URGGG to men. Either they are Big babies or they keep going until the just drop.

I hope he is feeling better soon, Ginny.

Well, I was in a super good mood at lunch today, and dh came home and gave me the litany: My throat hurts, my chest is filling up, my sinuses are killing me, my eyes are hot...
*sigh*
I hate when he gets sick. Fortunately, he likes to be left alone. But I HATE crawling into bed next to a sick man! Sometimes he offers to sleep in the spare room, or I do! I'm definitely not the nursing type (except for my kids). I just hope he keeps his germs to himself...

Hubby sleeps in the basement, when his nose is bothered by allergies. It's a good thing. When allergies are bothering him, he's just so loud. Between clearing his throat and snoring more, I would get NO sleep. Sometimes, he sleeps in the basement (on a couch), if I'm sick, too. Neither of us really likes to have company when we are sick, at night, anyway.

By Janet on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 - 10:14 am:

Dh was in the spare room last night, and we both got sleep! LOL Even when he's healthy, he snores so much that I'm awake several times saying, "Hon, please roll over!"

DH is such a "baby" when he is sick. I have never seen a man who thinks that they can'y do anything when they are sick like him. He does go to work, but when he gets home, he wants me to care for him. I milk it for all it's worth when I am sick so he can care for me like I care for him. LOL.:)

By Breann on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 - 06:59 pm:

My husband rarely uses his sick days at work. He likes to save them and use them for fun days off work. Sometimes I tell him he really should stay home if he's sick, but he always says he is fine.
