Redecorating question...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Redecorating question...

I'm very excited ! I just won a worker's comp case, where I was working in an old building that has black mold (and several other things in it )that made me Very sick.I haven't bought new furniture in over 20 yrs. So,we've decided to take some of the money and buy a new bedroom suit and maybe a few other pieces for the house. My question is this,do you keep with the same type of wood for each room,or does it look ok to have different wood types in different rooms? I already have an oak dinette table and chairs,so I'm going to get an oak china cabinet to go with it.So,I have found a BEAUTIFUL BEDROOM ( it's in the Grandma's Keepsakes selection) suite,in the oak wood. But I have also found another suite that I like, but it's a dark wood.SO,do you normally keep all the wood in your house the same(i.e. coffee tables, dinette set, bedroom set, et center ,etc ) or does it look ok to have different wood? The darker wood bedroom set is also a very good quality wood, and its about $15oo.00 cheaper. But ,since I probably won't have the chance to buy like this again,I won't to make sure that I'm pleased with my choices.I'm just confused about the how-to's of decorating with wood...and if I go with the light color wood, since I've always had dark wood, will I wish I had stayed with the light wood !?!? I mean, the dark wood ?See,I'm so stressed,I can even type right !!!! Please help me,before I change my mind and tell the workers comp people that they can keep the money...and my dh has me committed........

I think it's fine to have different wood in different rooms. As for whether or not you will regret buying the darker wood, that's hard to say. I know I used to have a preference for light wood. But we bought dark wood for our formal areas and our bedroom, and I still love it after having it for 7 years. :)

The way I decorate with my wood furnishings is that each piece of wood in the same room has to match but other rooms I have other styles of wood. Like my living room is the cherry oak mission style wood furnishings, and so are all the other wood items in my living room. My kitchen table is just plain oak, my bedroom is walnut. I think its all personal preference but I feel if I match my whole house to a certain wood, i'm overdoing it but if I mix and match pieces in the same room there is no *theme*

Good luck and congrats!

I have different kinds of wood throughout our whole house. It is even okay to mix and match different types of wood within a room.:) It really depends on your decorating style, how each room flows from one to another, etc. Take your time deciding-then you will be sure the set is the one you want.

Thank you all so much.Your advice helped me tremendously !!! DH and I went back to the furniture store and picked out a beautiful oak hutch/buffet to match our oak dinette table that we already have. Then we picked out a BEAUTIFUL solid cherry sleigh bedroom set.I wouldn't have been comfortable picking out different wood patterens if ya'll hadn't encouraged me .Thanks again. The store that we're getting them from is a "mom an pop" store, and not one of the big chain stores.I got them to compare their prices with the ones from the big stores that I have looked at,and it is unbelievable how their prices are sooooo much lower!!On one set that I was concidering,(and it's the exact set,not a cheaper made set)they were $900.00 cheaper!! The one we picked out is a Vaughn-Bassett solid cherry sleigh bed(king size)minus the matt/box springs, dresser, mirror, chest and 2 night stands for $1529.00.! That was waaayyy cheeper than the other places that we checked .And,again it's solid cherry wood, not veneer.Since they are an independant dealer, with less over-head,etc,they can sell it like this.I'm so happy, but it'll be a couple of weeks before it will be here because they have to order the larger bed. Thanks for letting me rattle on !!!!!!!

Yay! That sounds similar to what my dh and I plan on getting this spring. I love cherry wood and I think that mixing woods is fine. I'm glad you went ahead and got the set that made you happiest!
