Another Big V question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Another Big V question
By Kym on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 - 03:58 pm:

Well after 4 kids we've made the decision to end our child bearing years:)
My dh is going in tomorrow for the procedure, and he's a panicked mess, he usually is a very calm person but I can tell he's scared of any problems. He is very healthy and has not been to a Dr. since he was 15 he's now 38.
So I told him I would post here to see if anyone's dh had any of the negative reactions following. TIA

My hubby did have some negative reactions. He was very sore for several days. He did stay in bed for the weekend, other than one trip to the bowling alley to watch his son's party, he walked in, sat down for an hour and the walked out. Other than that he was on ice all weekend. Monday he went back to work in pain and really stayed that way for several days. It wasn't severe, just very very uncomfortable he said. The other bad side effect was for the first 6 months he thought things just didn't "feel" right. He said the sensation of ejactulation was different. But I think that was mostly psychological..LOL. You are to resume intercourse soon, you have to clear out the pipes. Anyway, 3 months after the op he had big regrets on doing it and was not really happy with the choice. However, we just passed a year now and I think he is much happier with the decision. We sure have sex a LOT more. Of course we both struggle a little with the finality and both kind of wonder if(hope) it will grow back :) All in all it was just not the walk in the park he expected, but wasn't horrible either.

My husband just had it done 4 weeks ago. He was in and out of the office in less then an hr. He was sore when he came home, and walked funny LOL :) He was sore for 2 days, he said it wasnt really painful, just very uncomfortable. He used frozen peas for the first 24 hrs. He didnt even take any Tylenol. He didnt swell either. I guess each person is different. On the Third day he was at the auto parts junk yard, searching for parts. He found if he did too much those first few days, he would be sore.He didnt stay in bed, he sat on the chair mostly, he did go up and down stairs slowly.
He said sex feels exactly the same way, he has noticed no difference. We are told to use condoms until January til the final check.

My husband had it done, and was in and out in 20 minutes. It took two days to recover fully, but he did swell because he went back to work the next day. We never went back for the recheck, I just couldn't handle that part of it!! LOL

Its been 4 years and its great not to have to think twice about birth control.

My DH had one 2 mos. ago. He said the actual procedure wasn't nearly as big a deal as he had anticipated. He stayed in bed or on the couch with ice packs the first day. The second day he took it easy but was up and around. By day 3 he was still sore but pretty much back to normal activity. He had it done on a Thursday and returned to work on Monday. He didn't feel up to resuming love making until 2 weeks later. At that point everything was in working order and no differences noticed. One month afterwards he suffered one of the complications of V - epididymitis. He took antibiotics and Motrin for 8-10 days and is now fine. We were instructed to use another form of BC until tests prove the procedure was successful. We've yet to get to that point. I *hope* it took! Waiting for Melanie to tell her story. :)

My DH had few problems with the actual procedure (although he did say that the urologist was a little rough while searching for the vas deferens), but he was sore off and on for a good week. He had it done on Thursday and was basically on the couch with frozen peas on his nether regions for 2 days. He's a minister so Sunday was a full 12 hr day for him and he was pretty sore that evening. Back at work 8-5 on Monday and sore each evening for about a week. Ready to try things out :) after a week and has reported no problems during sex. Do go back and get the sperm counts though. It took us 3 re-checks and 6 months to get rid of the little wigglers. The urologist told my DH that he had never had a patient have such a high sperm count so long after a V unless it grew back (of course, DH gloated--LOL). The doctor wanted to re-do the procedure, but we got him to a hold off a few more weeks and recheck again and we were sperm-free. It certainly does explain how I got pregnant on the first try with both kiddos! :)
