Need Pet Advice ASAP

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Need Pet Advice ASAP

My 2 *lovely* dogs got into a fight this morning bad enough to where I would try to pull them apart and they would try to bite me, which has NEVER happened before. It's sad to say but I had to actually kick them apart before one was seriously hurt. Like I said, NEVER happened before. Lexi had quite a bit of blood oozing from her face so I brought her in the house to clean her up. She had a nose bleed, mouth bleeding and a few lacerations. She looking better now and her snout swelling is going down.
I looked at Nikki at there was no blood so I left her outside to give them a break from each other. About 20 minutes ago I let Lexi back out (about 3 hours after the incident) and Nikki has blood on her mouth and all over her paws (from cleaning her mouth). I checked her out and apparently one of her teeth came out and the socket keeps bleeding. As luck has it on base there are no children allowed in the vet until after 3 (2 hours from now) so I cant take her but does anyone know how to stop the bleeding? I've had quite the morning and this just sums it up.

When you clip their nails too short they say to dip the nail in cornstarch. I don't know if that would work or not.

To be honest, I'd hesitate to try much of any home remedy for fear of making it worse. I'm assuming that they can get dry socket and the likes just like humans.

It's always something. It's either fur or skin kids.

Well, thank goodness it's starting to clot, which is better than nothing at this point. When DH gets home from work he can give them both a bath to get all the blood off of them and then i'll look at each of them again to make sure I didn't miss anything else. What a day!!! I'm sure a changed person, before DD I was running to the vets office (or in that case taking my pets to work :)) for the smallest scratch and now its shifted to running to the pediatrician for every small cut! Never thought the tables would turn!

I know it is in her mouth but try flour/cornstarch, the vet told me to use that one time. I would also take the one in who has the bites, you would not believe how quickly they get infected. My dog got bit one time and I almost lost her because of infection, it didn't look bad enough when it happened to take her to the vet.

I also got bit trying to pull my dogs apart one time, there is a scar on my hand (and it has been about 15 years ago). The vet told me to hit them with a stick, it sounds horrible but he said that is they only thing that they will feel enough to startle them for a moment.

Good Luck!

Yikes! You can also turn a hose on them to break it up. Hope they are ok. (and you too)

It might be a little late now, but can't you call the vet and ask their opinion on what you should do? I have never heard of a no kids at the vets rule! Is that common in other areas??
