Closet smells like feet

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Closet smells like feet
By Katherine on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 12:10 pm:

Do any of you have a problem with your closet smelling from having your shoes in there? As far as I know, everyone's shoes start to not smell so fresh at some point, so how do you combat that?

I am a freak as far as smells go. I have the nose of a blood hound, so smells really really bother me.

Any suggestions on how to freshen my closet?

Thanks!

Try putting a package of baking soda in the corner of the area the shose are kept. Also, I'm sure some odor powder made for shoes would help combat this. Febreeze might also work. Nate notices smells much more than I do, and he loves Lysol. HTH!!

I don't think there is an area of our house that hasn't been touched by Febreze at some point. We love it. I also like to put dryer sheets in shoes that I know won't be worn for a while. I also think that cedar blocks will help combat the smells.

I love the smell of cedar. Do you get them near the moth ball section at the store? Also, do you just put them out anywhere?

I love Febreeze too. I spray it everywhere! Not helping in the closet though.

I use those cedar air freshners.
They are the hanging kind and work well.

I've gotten them at Bed, Bath & Beyond. They smell so nice and you could put them right by your shoes.

I'm pretty sure Febreeze would mask the smell but not kill it. The smells in sneakers and shoes are from bacteria and Febreeze doesn't kill bacteria. Wash the sneakers if you can and spray the inside of shoes with Lysol. Baking soda after to absorb the smells or some charcoal (not sure they make charcoal things for shoes but I buy charcoal for my fish tank filter for maybe a buck and it comes in handy little bags that would fit in shoes).

LOL. I just think this sounds like something I would say so I just thought I would add it.

I have been knonw to store dryer sheets in out of season shoes..LOL. Also if you can find the stinky pair of shoes then buy some odor eater stuff and spray them and seal them in a garbage sack for a few days. As far as how to never get that smell in your closet. Store your shoes in those plastic boxes :)
