Dh's drivers license dilemma

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: Dh's drivers license dilemma
By Mara on Monday, November 8, 2004 - 10:25 am:

My dh is very rough on his drivers license. Because it is in his wallet in his rear pocket it takes a lot of wear and tear. Well, the license broke in half. He took some clear tape and taped the two pieces together. When they expired he went to get another one and they would'nt issue him another. Even though he had both pieces and everything was still readable on it they said that they could'nt take it. They said that he must show is birth certificate in order to get another one! The problem is we have looked EVERYWHERE and cannot find his birth certificate! We are in Indiana and he was born in Texas. It will take 8 weeks and $16 to get a copy from Texas. I don't understand why he has to show proof. We have marrige license, checking account, loans in his name, and BOTH pieces of his license....GRRR. I'm just really frustrated with the whole thing. A few years ago I remember losing my license and when I went to get a replacement I don't remember having to show my birth certificate....

I don't know about your state, but I lost my purse and driver's license last year. I am a AAA member so I went to the AAA office for help, and they were able to issue me a substitute license on the spot complete with picture. It may be that this is because the license is expired. Don't they send you a renewal notice in the mail when your license is due to expire so you can pay the fee and get the new license before the old one expires? That's what they do in Pennsylvania.

It may also be that the person he spoke with in the driver's license office was just being officious. Try calling the main state office of your department of motor vehicles and telling them the story and see what they say.

The AAA people were also able to help a friend who was not an AAA member - they just charged him a larger fee.
