What else are you voting for??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2004: What else are you voting for??
By Vicki on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 09:47 am:

I was just curious as to what else everyone is voting on today! Here the big things are issue 1 (gay marriage) and then locally, we have a school levy and a levy for a big community park (I voted for both) that we are all watching very close. So what is going on in your area???

By Missmudd on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 10:54 am:

In oregon we have a measure similar to yours about one man one woman = marrage. I think I probably voted different than my husband on this one..... I decided that religiously I am against gay marrage, morally however I can not deny a couple the rights and responsiblity of legally binding themselves together. In community property states (not oregon) if you live together long enough you are married if you do it offically or not. I really struggled w/ this one. I have had my mail in ballot for 2 weeks now and just turned it in yesterday. What I finally decided is that my religion (catholic) would never sanction gay marrage, that said I have always been taught by my religion to be tolerant of other peoples beliefs. I would be much happier if the gay community could find some word that ment marriage w/out using marriage. Let us hetro folks have our word and you guys figure out another word that means the same thing :) I do not think that a gay couple who want to get married are a great threat to our society, I do think that people who choose to act like tom cats of either sexual orientation are the bigger problem. Boy I am afraid of the heat I may take on this one :)

By Vicki on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 11:04 am:

I am not even going to say how or why I voted the way I did on our gay marriage issue. I don't want heat from either side!! LOL

By Janet on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 11:05 am:

We've got a very hotly debated school referendum in our district. Illinois schools are in such terrible financial shape, and our government is letting us twist in the wind because none of our leaders wants to be unpopular and make the tough choices. We've cut and cut and cut, and are still on a downward slope. It's so sad that our children are paying the price, but that's what we face. Anyway, in an attempt to keep our school district solvent for at least the next couple of years, we are voting on raising property taxes .55 on the dollar. There are many, many people who don't want this, and it's controversial because our farmland value is so depressed right now (we are a rural district). It's been ugly and I'll be so glad when tomorrow comes and it's over!

PS to Kristen... it's never easy to be firm on your convictions. :)

We are voting on limits for malpractice lawsuits. They are so bad here that we are losing doctors because they can not get insurance. We are also voting on if a poor school district is allowed to take money from a richer school district.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 12:01 pm:

We have a school referendum as well. One very old elementary school needs work and the high schools need revamped gym facilities. Since I have one kid in a high school and one who will be there soon, I voted yes.

School Referendum Facts

The school referendum has been quite shoved down our throats, though. Everytime there was a school function, we got a brochure. Never mind that you might have gotten 2 or 3 times already. Then they had a brochure on the tables at several local restaurants, too! LOL!

Also, a hotly contested US Senate race between Russ Feingold and Tim Michels.

By Cat on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

School mill levy and more money for our fire protection district are big ones here.

By Melanie on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 01:37 pm:

The biggest one locally I am watching today is our School Board election. My best friend is running and I am keeping my fingers crossed she gets on so she can help make some much needed changes!

We also are voting on stem cell research and widening a section of highway.

By Mommmie on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

Nothing!

Emily - Our poor school districts are supported by our wealthy districts and it's a nightmare. They just declared it unconstitutional, in fact, so now they have to figure out some other way to pay for schools in Texas.

By Emily7 on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 01:48 pm:

Our school district is the wealthiest in the state, so it would be money leaving our county. I feel bad, but I voted against it.

By Mommmie on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

That's good. Our district sends out $40 million a year and it's been horrible! It ruins a budget. They have to cut teachers and programs since they have $40 million less to work with - every single year. And that's our property taxes they are shipping off!

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 02:49 pm:

Nothing here. I had asked if we were voting on any referendums/propositions because in Travis County there was an error occurring for early voters who used the touch screen and voted a straight Democratic ticket. Their votes were showing up on the screen as Bush for president if they skipped the proposition at the bottom. Strange, but apparently it was noticed and corrected.

By Kim on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 10:37 pm:

We had to vote on whether a child's parents should be notified before and abortion....not asking consent, just notification.

We voted to get rid of the amend for the bullet train in FL that costs a LOT a money

We voted for med malpractice lawsuits and lawyer percentage

We voted on whether a patient should have the right to view the doctor/med practice's file if there is something negative in there

We voted on whether doctors who have more than three bad practice strikes against them should be allowed to practice in FL......I am assuming that right now there is NO limit???

Something about slot machines in Dade and Broward counties

And I think I am missing one or two.....

We only had 3 items on our ballot this time.
President
US House of Representative which was a Democrat or
Republican Bush hater
State Representative unopposed

Not much voting this time

By Kristie on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 01:09 am:

Emily,
I was gonna ask you how you voted on the Amendments, if you don't mind me asking. I voted yes on all four. I do understand why you voted against that one with the money for schools. The reason I voted for it is cuz they have torn down 3 grade schools hear last summer because of the condition of the buildings. Now a bunch of the schools are crowded cuz of the lack of schools. I'm glad that I have Russell where I do cuz it's not close to the middle of town and no one thinks about takeing their kids to school there! But I would feel the same way you do about it if I lived there!! What did ya vote on Amendments C and D? Don't answer if ya don't want to. I voted yes.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 08:06 am:

Our school referendum passed! I'm happy about that.

By Vicki on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 08:45 am:

Our school and park issues failed. I am bummed about that!! Not that our schools are in that bad of shape, but the extra money for improvements would have freeded up some money in the general fund!!

By Cat on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 08:50 am:

Our school mill levy didn't pass, again. :( Over 25,000 people voted and it failed by 200 votes. There's talk of a recount, but I don't think it will matter. This is really going to hurt the students in our district. We're already over crowded, with over 2000 students in modulars and trailers. I'm very upset about this. Dh is happy because our taxes won't be raised. Yeah, that's nice, but the kids really needed this. :(

By Emily7 on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 08:56 am:

I also voted yes on C&D Kristie.
