Do you wear your wedding ring?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Do you wear your wedding ring?
By Sunny on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 01:49 pm:

Inspired by Trina's post, Do you wear your wedding ring? Are there any times you take it off?

When I was first married I never took my rings off. Then I got pregnant with #4 and my fingers started swelling up. I had to take them off. Since I'm not a jewelry person (much to the dismay of my DH), I got used to not wearing them. I rarely wear them anymore.

By Melanie on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 01:51 pm:

The only time I have taken mine off is when I was pregnant and my fingers swelled. Otherwise they are always on my finger. :)

By Tink on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 01:53 pm:

Sunny, I have a nearly identical story. My dh isn't very particular about me wearing them and they were always getting caught or scratching something. I always feel ashamed when someone asks why I don't, though.

By Colette on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 01:58 pm:

I never take mine off except to clean them.

By Kaye on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 02:05 pm:

I don't wear mine either. My original ring was a bad design and although pretty, it was uncomfortable. I had it resized at least twice trying to fis it, thining if it was bigger, or smaller it might move less. My hubby completely supported me not wearing it because I had a huge gash on my hand from it, once I had kids I was always catching it and then it woudl push into my hand..ouch! So on our 7th anniversary he bought me an anniversary ring, I mostly wore that for a long time. I am not sure why I quit, I just did, now it seems to have "shrunk" :) I also inherited a beautiful diamond solitare from my SM when she passed. I would like to have that reset into a setting for me, but money has kept that from happening. So I wear that sometimes too as is, but I feel weird wearing someone elses ring (my sh bought a gold band for me to wear with it) anyway, so no, I don't. I am not a jewelry person either, but I also just haven't had the ring of my dreams yet either..lol

By Andi on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

Only to clean it. :)

By Eight_Kids on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 02:50 pm:

I lost my first one....took it off to put bug stuff on the kids and left it on the hood of the car....never did find it. DH just recently bought me another band, but it had to be sized and it fits perfectly on my thumb! Interesting place for a wedding band huh? But it's been there ever since! :)

By Cat on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

I wear three rings. My wedding set, my mom's old wedding band that I had resized to fit my thumb, and my anniversary band. They come off at night before I go to bed (can't sleep with jewelry on--drives me nuts!) and go back on after I get out of the shower and dressed. I take them off to put hand lotion on and then put them right back on. I use a lot of lotion because with daycare my hands are wet a LOT. I still end up with cracked fingers. (youch!) So if I didn't take them off to put lotion on they'd be filthy and just plain gross. There are some days I don't put them on at all, but not very often. I did have to have my wedding set resized after Robin was born. It went up 1/2 a size (just like my shoes! lol). On really cold days I sometimes feel like it's going to fall off and I figure if I lose that last 15lbs I may have to have it resized again! (wouldn't that be nice???) I feel naked going out without my rings and watch on. I can go without ear rings or a necklace, but can't have naked hands. :)

By Trina~moderator on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 02:56 pm:

Up until yesterday, when my diamond fell out, I only took them off to clean. When I get my ring fixed I'll have to change that. I hate going without my wedding bands. :(

By Annie2 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 03:37 pm:

I'm on my third diamond and second band.
My first diamond was given to me from my mom when dh and I first were married. We didn't have much money so we used that one until dh could by me one of his own to give me. I have put that one diamond ring with my departed mom's bands and ring for the kids to inherit one day.
The diamond that dh bought me was a tear drop style and kept scratching the kids. My original wedding band is thin, white gold and the diamond he bought me was set in yellow gold.
In 2000 both my MIL and Mom passed away. I was left with a few pieces of jewelry and a few lovely stones. I had some reset into a two different rings. One is my wedding ring and one I wear almost everyday. Dh bought me a wider band to go with my new wedding ring. I put my original band and second diamond away for safe keeping. I wear them once and awhile if feeling nostalgic. :)
I wear my band everyday, take it off for mixing meat, dough, applying lotion, etc. I wear my diamond most days but usually not if I am staying at home.
Everytime I go to the mall, maybe once a month or so, I go to the jewelry store where they clean my rings and check the prongs for free.

By Missmudd on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 03:49 pm:

I wear my rings all the time unless they are in the shop, which is usually once a year or so. I am really hard on jewelry. After 14 yrs of being married the wedding set is showing signs of wear, we are discussing replacing w/ a new set and renew our wedding vows at the same time so I dont feel funny about a wedding set I didnt get married for lol.

By Yjja123 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 04:05 pm:

I am on my third set.
When we married in 1993 I had a sapphire diamond ring (more like a cocktail ring than an engagement ring). It was all we could afford.
After my son was born Hubby surprised me with a marquise diamond surrounded by sapphire baguettes. It IS a pretty ring but drove me nuts. The diamond caught on everything. I lost the diamond once (luckily is was insured) and broke the setting twice.
Last year we celebrated our 10th anniversary. Hubby bought me a diamond anniversary band, and a sapphire anniversary band. I wore them stacked together.
For Christmas he bought me a diamond ring (round brilliant diamond that does not catch on anything) that now sits between my 2 anniversary bands. I love them and have fun mixing and matching them. I only take them off at night.

I wear mine all the time. I do take it off to sleep and shower and when i am cooking something extra messy. But I do feel naked without it.

My dh wears his most of the time. He is in construction and doesn't wear it while working for obvious reasons. He has recently lost weight and now the ring is really loose on his finger. WE have to get it sized.

By Kristie on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 04:32 pm:

My DH and I ALWAYS wear our rings. The only time we take them off is when we put lotion on or if there getting cleaned.

By Cakekisses324 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 06:04 pm:

Yes I do. I dont always wear my engagement ring, but always wear my band. We also just got married too so...(9-1):)

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 07:09 pm:

I'm not a jewelry person either, but I ALWAYS have my wedding ring and engagement ring. Only exception was for 6 days after dd was born. I swelled from the IV. Other than that, always on. I feel nekid (that's southern for naked) without them.

By Boxzgrl on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

Always, i'm proud to show i'm married to the man of my dreams! :)

And here on base it helps keep the single Marine away, if you KWIM! :)

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 07:40 pm:

I wear mine most of time. For a few months when I was pregnant, both times, my fingers swelled up too much, so I took my ring off. If I'm mixing meatloaf or meatballs, I take it off. The thought of ground beef stuck in the nooks and crannies grosses me out! For hand lotion, I usually take it off and forget to put it back on! LOL!

So, anyway, most of the time with a few exceptions. My hand feels naked without it, too! I go to readjust it and it isn't there. It feels so funny!

By Jelygu on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 07:45 pm:

I wear mine all the time, just take it off for lotion and if I am using a harsh chemical for cleaning or something.

By Melana on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 08:08 pm:

Mine never come off except as most of you do to clean with harsh chemicals or if I'm making something messy or cleaning them.

DH on the other hand NEVER wears his but once in a great while, he says it doesn't fit right and when he wipes his face it scratches him. It used to bother me, but it doesn't anymore.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 09:42 pm:

Actually, I only wear ANY of my jewelry when I go out of the house. Sometimes I wear my rings when I'm at home all day, sometimes not. I love to wear jewelry, but at the end of the day I want EVERYthing off. Plus, my hands swell at night, so there's no way I'd try to sleep in them.

By My2cuties on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 09:47 pm:

Dh and I wear our rings all the time. I have taken mine off to get it cleaned but that's it. I love my ring. :)

By Beth on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 09:47 pm:

I have not worn mine for at least 3 years because my setting fell out. I cannot afford to have it fixed and mine was not insured. Dh had lost two! But guess what the firemen actually found his first one that had been gone for 6 years behind the drier that caught fire! So he now is wearing his again. I acutally don't see it being long though because it drives him crazy. That is how he lost it it in the first place. He takes it off when he does stuff because it rubs his finger.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 10:18 pm:

On all the time, unless my fingers are swollen, I'm pregnant, or mixing meatloaf or meatballs. I couldn't wear my rings most of the time that I was pregnant, since my fingers were swollen.

Sometimes my fingers get swollen now and I just take them off for a while. Otherwise, on my hand all the time.

By Insaneusmcwife on Sunday, October 24, 2004 - 10:54 pm:

I wear mine all the time and I am also wearing his on my thumb until he gets back.

By Brandy on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 07:43 am:

I wear mine all of the time except for when i was pregnant eons ago lol..Danny does not wear his because of the work he does(Army Mechanic) and the newer set he got 6 years ago is too big for him..also when he is home he doesn't wear any either because he works at a junk yard.I would rather him not wear them so he won't get his hand or finger chopped off by getting it stuck somewhere...

By Fraggle on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 09:01 am:

I wear my rings all the time (except for when I was very pregnant). My rings are pretty much the only jewelry I wear. My dh barely ever wears his.

By Boxzgrl on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 10:23 am:

My DH ever wore his in Iraq. I thought it was special. Hes on the cover of a book done about the war and his ring is showing, its soo shiny in the real picture. I wanted to cry when I saw it. :)

I can see his ring! Wow, amazing that he didn't lose it or something! I would be afraid of that. You would never find it in all that sand!

By Rayanne on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 11:21 am:

Melissa, that is so neat.

I always wear my ring. I had to take it off the day I went into the hospital to have Rylee because it was way too tight. Besides that, the only time I take it off is clean it. I love my rings.

By Janet on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 11:28 am:

I usually don't wear it unless I'm out somewhere. I don't wear it around the house, or gardening, or cooking... My dh has a cheap one we bought for the wedding ceremony, but he farms and works at a factory, so he never has it on for safety reasons. And, I need to add, it doesn't bother me one bit. My ex wore his all the time, even when he was cheating on me.

By Emily7 on Monday, October 25, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

I always wear mine.
When I got to big with my ds I was so upset that I had to take it off. My dh went out & got me a band to wear.

By Marcia on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - 12:23 am:

I haven't worn mine for many years. Actually, other than some bracelets, I don't wear any jewellery. I took it all off when preg 10 years ago, because I started reacting to everything. I've tried several times, but everything gives me excema. I missed it all for quite some time, but I'm used to it now.
Hubby doesn't wear his to work, because he's a butcher. He puts it on when he gets home.

By Nicosmom on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - 02:13 am:

I started to go without mine after I had ds. I always felt like I would scratch him or something. I also could not get used to wearing it all the time and getting it wet and dirty, and now it is too big. So, I don't wear it that much. Oh and when I do wear it people say "You're married! You look too young to be married!!" I look like I'm 16.

By Tunnia on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - 08:47 am:

I usually only take mine off if I am doing something messy - like making meatloaf. I'm only wearing my wedding band right now though because I squashed my engagement ring (while it was still on my finger - ouch) a couple of months ago and had to use pliers to get it off so now the ring is ruined.:( I need to take it to my jewelers and have the diamond put in another setting, but I haven't had the time to do that yet. I am very upset that my engagement ring won't be "the same one my dh gave me".

By Eve on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - 09:51 am:

I usually just wear my wedding band alone most days. I also take everything off to sleep; I always have. I can't remember if my rings still fit when I was 9 months pregnant with DD.:)
