Went to the Dr. today (and have a ?)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Went to the Dr. today (and have a ?)
By My2cuties on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 11:50 pm:

Well, I went to the Dr. today (my first visit). But she wouldn't see me yet because I am only 10 1/2 weeks, so they just drew blood and all the fun stuff and I go back in a couple of weeks.

Ok here is the thing, I have been like major sick lately and I have lost 10- 15 lbs. since I have been pregnant. They were kind of worried about it and said I may need to go to the hospital and get an IV if I got dehydrated and all that.

Well, she called in a prescription for reglan and fenergan. Well, fenergan I have had before because I was sick with my other 2 children. But it is the Reglan I am worried about, on the bottle it says inform your doctor if you experience sadness, mood swings, and something else. I just don't think that is something I want to take.

I guess my question is Have any of you taken this, I know my mom said it was also used for Cancer patients with sickness. Any info would be helpful, I trust my Doctor, but I was just kind of questioning this one, I have never had it before. And she told me not to even start taking prenatal vitamins yet. :( I hope I get better soon and I hope my little fella in there is okay.

That again for reading and any info.

I used this with my last two pregnancies. It is similar to fenergan. Anti-nausea, made me really sleepy. I have mild depression occassionally and I didn't notice any mood side effects. Maybe a little cranky because I wanted to go to sleep :) I am more concerned by the fact that she didn't prescribe prenatals. My OB called in a prescription when I called to say that I suspected I was pregnant because she felt it was better to have them and not need them than to go without. Can you call and request that she call in a prescription? You'll be out of your first trimester if you wait much longer. Lots of hugs being sent your way. I hope the meds help your tummy.

The top link is the most informative. Metoclopramide (Reglan) effectively relieves nausea and vomiting by increasing the muscular contractions of the stomach and intestines, thus relieving pressure. These problems can be caused by chemotherapy or a gostic reflux disease. It has not been found to be harmful to unborn children.

I didn't get sick when I was pregnant, though I did eat a lot of crackers!

I've taken Reglan for nausea before. My friend was taking it before she had gall bladder surgery, and in fact, still takes it. I'm not real familiar with the side effects, but you need to realize that *all* meds have side effects, and you sure be aware of that with a pregnancy. I have an Rx for Phenergan right now - it makes me sleepy! The Reglan doesn't make me feel sleepy, or anything else, for that matter.

OH - I forgot to say that when I was pregnant with Jen, I lost 12 lbs. the first 3 months also. I was SO sick! My doc at the time gave me Vistaril, but I hated it because it made me act bitchy and didn't work that well anyway. He then put me on something else, can't remember what, and it knocked me out so I wouldn't take it (3 other kids in the house!).

I hope you start feeling better soon!!!!!

She probably told you not to start prenatals yet because they can upset your stomach. If you're concerned about it, you can take Flinstones or something similar. My doctor told me to do that for awhile if the prenatals got to me.

My son was on it for a year because of reflux. If I remember right it empties your stomach out faster so there is nothing tot come back up.

I am 23 weeks pregnant and still have a hard time with prenatals! I take Flinstones--they don't make me as sick, but the others make me so sick. My prenatal nurse the first visit told me to worry more about eating a healthy diet rather than taking the vitamins, but I was worried about that too. I get extremely sick with pregnancies (lost alot of weight with #1, had to have fluids twice--once overnight) and dd#1 came out with no major problems. I am sorry you are sick. I also took phenergan, but can't this time much because it makes me too tired to take care of dd. I hope you feel better soon!

I took Reglan for a totally different reason than others here! I used it for breastfeeding! For some reason it stimulates milk release/production. I experienced NO side effects with this medication except the easier release of milk.

Thanks All, I have a prescription for prenatal vitamins but I am not supposed to fill it til I start feeling better. I have been napping around all day and I have been able to eat some good food today, Thank God. Anyway, I am going to try the Reglan this weekend (while DH is home to watch the girls) and see how it makes me feel. Thanks again.

Adorable girls. It won't be long before you have to change to My3cuties.

But anyway, Reglan is a fairly safe product. I'm a little surprised that the bottle had a note on it about mood swings, etc. I would have expected the patient information leaflet to have something like that but that is one of those things that occurs in a very small percentage of people. For example:say they gave the med to 1000 people in testing and while taking it 10 people said they experienced the effect, the drug co has to note it. But in actuality the effect may have been something that would have happened anyway because of the pt's illness or just life.

Reglan is a safe drug that we use constantly in the hospital. In 19 years I think I can remember twice of pt's having ill effects from it and neither time did it have anything to do with mood swings. It may make you feel a bit more tired but the Phenergan will also.

Prenatals--get the OB to give you samples of a few of different ones. My OB gave me 2 that were big brand names. Threw 'em up as fast as I could take 'em. My family doctor gave me a prescription for a cheap generic and they were absolutely fine. No problem. But if Flinstines work, that's better than nothing.

Good luck sweetie.
