My dog woes continue.....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: My dog woes continue.....

Some of you saw my post this weekend about getting a dog. He has medical issues right off the bat that I was not expecting. I guess I don't know really what I am looking for rather advice or just a vent. The lady who gave him to me totally lied about his condition. They think that he has mites. The doctor could not find them but they treat him anyway. Of course it is the kind that can be contagious to humans. But he has been treated so I am not to worried about it. It is in the back of my mind though. Because of course that would be another dog related expense. Plus I of course don't want that for my kids. I am just wondering at this point we have only had him for a couple of days. Should I just cut my losses and give him to the animal shelter? I know that my dk's would be heartbroken. I would not do this if I thought he would be put down. But they should have resources that we don't have to help him get better. Right now though I have to take him every two weeks at $30 dollars a pop for treatment, he still needs all of his shots and I need to get him some meds today for the itching that will be about $45. He also has this smell that we have to put up with until he gets better. I am just so torn up about this. Money is tight and I can tell my dh is not happy with me for bringing this on us. But he is being very good about it. Not to mention the neighbor was snotty with me yesterday when she found out we got a dog. We share a yard. This dog will not be out much. She mentioned that she was supposed to be getting her sisters dog and I think that was really the problem. I of course can't give him to someone else at this point because I can not lie to someone else about him. One bright spot is he is a good dog. Listens well, walks on a leash, does not bark at all hardly, potty trained and lays down a lot. Of course right now he is on benadryl for the itching so that could be part of his good behavior. I am sorry this is so long I just am worrying myself to death and needed to talk. Thanks.

Beth, there is a website called www.imom.com I dont know too much about it but from what I get they help you out financialy if you qualify and run pretty much off donations.

And for the future, if you do a google search for financial assistance in Illinois there is a program that does free spay/neuter for those on government assistance (food stamps, WIC etc...) so if thats you thats something good to look into as well.

If you need any further assistance my friend is a veterinarian and went to school at Purdue in Indiana so she may have some resources. If you need them ask me and i'll email her. But check out that website and see if they can do anything.
