Upsetting news from the dr. Need support

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Upsetting news from the dr. Need support
By Kristie on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 10:23 pm:

I had to go to the ER Friday because I have had extream pain for 3 weeks now and am 2 weeks late on my monthly. They said I have a massive complex cyst on my right ovary and possible endometriosis. I have to follow up with a doctor because they said that this CAN NOT be ignored. She said that the cyst is big enough that if it were to rupture it would be extreamly seriouse. Does anyone know of any good web sights that I can go to to find out exactly what I am dealing with? I have to go to a family practice clinic that has practice drs and I want to know everything that I am dealing with before I walk in there because I DO NOT trust them, but it all I can afford. I am so scared and in sooooooo much pain. They gave me 50mg of morphine and sent me home with 50mg demerol pills for my pain and it isnt even makeing me comfortable. I am sitting here crying my eyes out and probabley over reacting. Please give me any info you can think of. Thanks ahead of time everyone. You always come through for me.:)

I don't have any web sites or experience but I wanted to give you a great big hug and remind you that we are always here for you. I'm sure that others here have gone through this but I thought you might need this quick.

I am so sorry, I wish I knew of a website, or knew of a way to help you. I will be praying for you, (((hugs)))...The family practice may refer you to a specialist, and they will HAVE to treat you. (even if you have no insu. or an insu. tht they do not accept)

By Palmbchprincess on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 10:49 pm:

No experience, but big hugs to you. I know it is hard having a doctor you don't trust, and this must be so scary. You do have an advantage since you have already been to the ER, and know what is going on. I'll be thinking of you, please let us know what happens. (((Kristie)))

Kristie I wish that you could get to Gillette. My OB/GYN, Dr. Sheppard, is awesome & I am she would work with you.
I do not have any knowledge about what you are going through, but please know my prayers are with you.
I am here if you need me.

Kristie, I went and did a search on google and there are a lot of sites talking about Complex cyst. I suggest you just do a search on your own and do some reading because being informed is key to making sure you get the best treatment possible... Google.com is a great search engine...

Big hugs and take care of yourself.

Kristie, I don't know of a web site to help you, but I just wanted to say that when my sister was about 23-24 she had a cyst on her ovary. She had to have surgery to remove it and was in the hospital a day or two. She lost a bit of one ovary during the surgery, but she went on to have a son two years later, a daughter two years after that, and another son two years after that. She is now perfectly healthy. Hugs to you.

Kristie, I had a similar cyst on my right ovary and had it surgically removed - cyst and ovary - when I was about 19 or 20. I had four pregnancies after that, 3 sons and a miscarriage. I never had endometriosis, but I know they are handling it much better now than when a friend had it (about 20 years ago) and she got pregnant and has a beautiful daughter now.

You do need to see a good gyne/ob immediately, preferably one who has lots of surgical experience. This pain is not going to go away and you may be risking serious complications if it is not dealt with quickly.

This says you can treat future cases by being on birth control?

By Mommyathome on Monday, October 18, 2004 - 12:10 pm:

((((hugs))))
I hope you find the answers you are looking for. I currently have ovarian cysts, but so far they haven't been as extreme as you are describing.

By Kay on Monday, October 18, 2004 - 12:17 pm:

Just to ease your mind, please know that you are NOT seeing 'practice' doctors if your family practice clinic is a residency training program. Every one of the doctors at our family practice clinic (I work for a medical association) have a medical degree. They are working on a specialty designation....family practice *is* a specialty area. I know doctors who have left residency programs before finishing and still were able to practice medicine.

I am posting only for educational purpose - there are a lot of misconceptions out there regarding these programs, many of which are very highly rated. (Plus, you're getting the doctors who have the latest education.)

By Kay on Monday, October 18, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

Also, to clarify something else - a specialist does not *have* to accept you simply because you were referred....unless there is a referral arrangement between the two facilities. In many family practice clinic operations, specialty physicians from the community volunteer as faculty and mentors, and take these patients.

A doctor in private practice cannot be forced to accept a patient.

Back in January I was diagnosed with CIN(Cervical Intraepitheleal Neoplasia. (HA HA.....now I know why they call it CIN). That is like skin cancer of the skin of the cervix and could progress to full blown cervical cancer.

I searched every web site I could find, every search engine, etc....all they did was make me petrified! I didn't get any good info on it.

I eventually got a brochure from my doctor that explained it so that I understood exactly what I was dealing with.

Why don't you call your DR and see if he has any printed information on your condition that you could pick up, or if he could suggest some places for you to research.

That was the best thing that I ever did.

Hope this help!

Good luck and I will pray for you!

By Kristie on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - 04:45 pm:

Kathrine I have had CIN also at high grade. I have also had little fluid filled cysts on my ovaries before I got preg. with my son and they didn't cause me any discomfort. I have had 2 LEEPs, 4 Colposcopies (sp), 2 cervical biopsies, and exploritory lapriscopic surgery. I also have had my tubes tied so I don't care if I cand never get preg.
Kay, I didn't mean to insinuate that the doctors aren't real doctors at family practice. I'm sure that there are many places in this country where the doctors at the practiceing clinics are great. That is not really the case where I live. I personally have had bad experiences at this place. I KNEW something was wrong with me and was told by some smart alec dr. that cramps are part of being a woman and that I should just deal with them like most women do. Then my mom paid for me to go to a OB/GYN and they found pre cancerous cells on my cervix. So if I have little faith in them I can't help it.
Anyway I did get in to the clinic and am set up with one of the head drs. of the clinic who specialies in female problems. They are goona suppress my period for 6 months and see if the pain will go away and if not then they will have to send me to a surgeon because they don't do surgery there. I go in for another ultrasound on the 28th to see if the cyst has shrunk then I go back to the dr for the results of my pap. Emily, I have heard of your doctor in Gillette and have heard really good things! Your lucky to have a dr that is cool about payments. I did qualify for the slideing fee and only have to pay 25% of my bill and prescriptions! They just opened a dental clinic and they have counseling too and I only have to pay 25%. So at least that is good news! I'll write again when I know more. Thanks to those of you who sent encourageing words to me. I am glad that I have your support!!!!

By Emily7 on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - 05:05 pm:

I am glad that you qualify for a sliding fee.
I will keep you in my thoughts. Please keep us updated.

By Katherine on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - 07:15 pm:

Geez Kristie,
you have had a really rough time with your female parts! I thought what I went through with the CIN was awful, but you really take the cake.

I will definately keep you in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

By Kay on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - 07:33 pm:

Kristie, what that doctor told you was inexcusable. Since he refused to take you seriously only for another doctor to find something, I urge you to file a complaint through your county medical society. Feel free to email me privately at: wacomedicine @ cs. com (without all the spaces) and I will be happy to locate the nearest entity to you.

Part of my job is to help the physicians keep an eye on each other - high quality and professionalism are very important to them, and if we allow less, then I haven't done my job. :)

By Kristie on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - 11:44 pm:

Thanks for offering the help Kay. This happened a few years ago and the dr that treated me isn't even there any more. I did luck out by getting the dr that I did get though. Can you believe he just talked to me for 20min before he had me undress and examine me!! That has never happened to me before. Your right Kathrine I have had a lot of problems with my women parts, which is why I am all for getting a histerectomy (sp). I know I am only 28, I'll be 29 in a few months. My mom went through menopause in her early 40's and so did my grandma. So I will probley go through it in about 10 yrs anyway so with my problems I opt for sooner than later. This pain affects EVERY ASPECT of my life. I can't play with my ds, I can't make love with my dh, I can barely stand long enough to do the dishes. I hope this dr will help me and take me seriously. Thanks for keeping me in you prayers girls!!!!!!
