Still has strep

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Still has strep
By Cat on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 04:22 pm:

Randy finished his medicine on Tuesday (10 days of penicillian) and by yesterday morning was complaining his throat hurt. So we went back this morning and they did a rapid strep test and sure enough, it's still there. So now he's on clindamycin for 10 days (four times a day!!! Yuck!). I hope this knocks it out. At least they have one more weeks of fall break so he'll finish his medicine the day they go back to school. Kids...

I hope this med works for him.
Poor kid sick on his fall break!
What a bummer!

Sometimes strep is resistant, especially if you have a child that's been on antibiotics often. Mine had it so many times that Amoxil never worked for them and they had to take Augmentin all the time, or a Bicillin injection.

Clindamycin can be harsh on the tummy, so be aware of that. I've been on that more times than I can count this year for all the dental stuff I've been through, and you should stay pretty much vertical for 30 minutes after taking it. Check to see if there are any foods/drinks/dairy products you shouldn't have while on it, or within the hour of taking it.

It *can* cause stomach aches and nausea/diarrhea.

Hope he's better soon!

Thanx, all. He's not "sick" really. His throat just hurts! I told a friend of mine that Robin's probably the carrier since he never gets it. She's a nurse also, and she said the med he's on is very strong so it should do it's job. He hasn't had any problems with stomach aches or anything yet so I'm hoping he won't. It's so hard to try and give the med at 6 hour intervals (I'm NOT waking him up to give it to him!) especially when he can't lay down for 30 minutes after taking it. The penicillian was twice a day. I liked that. Oh well. Can't have everything, can we. It's only 10 days (now 9 and counting).

I hope this medicine does the trick for him Cat. My youngest ds always gets strep. He sometimes has to go through 2 rounds of antibiotics. Also, a tip my ped. told me is to make sure and get him a new toothbrush after 24 hours of taking the medication and then a new one after he is finished with it. He said that the bacteria stays in the toothbrush so you need to replace it.
