More car help needed... VW owners anyone??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: More car help needed... VW owners anyone??

Ok, I must have jinxed myself saying we have had no problems with our VW Jetta. We were driving the other day, with cruise control set, and all of a sudden the CC kicked off. Then the speedometer went dead. The tachometer, and clock are still reading, but my speedometer and odometer are not. The gas gauge is now off, and obviously CC is not working. We took it to Autozone for a free diagnostic, but they don't have the type of plug our car uses. The fuses are not blown, but we are almost positive it is a relay or fuse somewhere. It's not a vacuum line. The manager of the Autozone said we need to locate the relay box, but Nate said he's not sure this model has one. He's pretty sure he can fix it once we figure out the cause, but VWs are difficult. Does anyone know if it has a relay box, or what may be causing this? I know we have a few car savvy dads (and moms!!) We're trying to avoid huge repair costs if possible. We've got a Hayne's guide for our vehicle on the way, but any quick advice would be appreciated. BTW... it's 2001 Jetta Turbo Diesel Injected. TIA!!!

I bought a new VW Golf in 1989. I will never buy another VW. Good luck trying to find service that can figure out the damned electrical system. All I can say is "Good Luck" and hope you have a better warranty than I had at the time.

No warranty... I'm stressing!!! I love the car, except the size... but now we're really in trouble if we can't find the problem!!

I have also heard that these cars can be a nightmare to fix!! I hope that isn't the case and you find your answers quickly and cheaply!!

I have a 99 Passat....why don't you call VW and talk to someone in the Service Department. Tell them you don't have the money to bring in your car right now so your DH is going to try to fix it. Tell them what is going on and you want to know where the relay box is...I'm sure they will help you. You never know, maybe more people have complained about this problem or there was a recall you never heard about and they will fix it for free.

Hope it works out. Let us know what happens :)
