Trick or Treating?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Trick or Treating?
By Jelygu on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 10:29 am:

Since Halloween is on a Sunday, will most people be trick-or-treating on that Saturday night because of the church and stuff? I know that it has happened that way in the past, so I was wondering if it would be that way this year.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 10:36 am:

Our community is celebrating on Saturday. Trunk-or-treat will be happening on Saturday night.

However, we will probably have a few trick-or-treaters on Sunday night as well. But, the majority will be on Saturday.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 11:26 am:

In our small town they will probably just have one night of trick or treating and that will be Sunday night. I would much rather it on Saturday tho. We will see.

By Jackie on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 11:58 am:

In our town, the trick or treating hrs are always the same, dusk until 8pm.. But it will still be on Oct 31st

By Lorebunde on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 01:40 pm:

I never would of even thought that it would be on a Saturday. Usually it is celebrated on the day it falls. Maybe this is a tradition in some areas?

By Mommmie on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

We (this city) always do it the day it falls, no matter what.

By Tonya on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 02:08 pm:

day it falls here too.

DId you all relaize that is the fall back night for time too for those of you in areas that your time changes. So fo allot fo us it will be darker sooner that night.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 02:30 pm:

My city does it ON halloween from 4pm until 7pm. We will be going to my sister's house in a different city, so the cousins can trick or treat together and the adults can socialize in my sister's warm house. It's a nice subdivision and they can go by themselves. Then we all eat supper together. I'm looking forward to it and made sure I didn't have to work that day.

Our town is trick or treating on Sat. from 5-7.

By Ilovetom on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 03:07 pm:

Our is tiny too and our paper suggested trick or treating 6-8 on Saturday.

I can't wait. I have teenagers now, but I love to see the children dressed up.

By Angellew on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 03:12 pm:

I, too, would have never even considered Saturday!!??!! It is just tradition to celebrate on whatever day it falls on. And, since I live in the Halloween capital of the country, Salem, MA... it MUST be on Sunday!

I can't wait!!!!

I hadn't even thought about this! I'm am really hoping it's on Sunday. I have plans to go see one of my favorite bands on Saturday. I need to look into this!!

By Bea on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 05:13 pm:

Around here, the cities put the trick or treat times in the paper, and encourage people to abide by it. They haven't posted it yet. I'm hoping it's Sunday night, since our cruise gets in that morning. I really enjoy having the kids come.

By Emdee on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 07:44 pm:

Do other places have churches that hold some sort of fall festival to celebrate? Here, it is the equivalent of trick or treating, along with games, etc. where the kids can dress up (appropriately) and come and have fun. That is what we have here, and since it is at church anyway it will of course be on Sunday. Just curious if this is just something that happens around here!

By Melanie on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

Trick-or-treating is always on Halloween here. It took a while for me to get used to that because where I grew up it was almost always on a different night. Our school has a Halloween festival the Saturday before Halloween (or on the 31st if it falls on a Saturday).

By Vicki on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 08:04 pm:

Well, in the past it has always been on the 31st. But I did just read in the paper that it will be on the 30th! I am not sure if it is because it is a Sunday or what, but that is what our paper had!!! Might have to call just to be sure!! I am glad it is on Saturday night if it is! Too much fun and sugar to get the kids to bed on time for school the next day!!

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 08:24 pm:

A lot of communities do it on Sunday anyway. They have it on the Sunday before Halloween, in the afternoon.

By Momoffour on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 09:34 pm:

Ours will be on Saturday from 5-9 but I don't let my go anymore here anyway. 2 years ago we went to a pretty nice neighborhood with alot of other trick or treaters and we came to this one house that was handing out suckers and she gave the twins one well we didn't think anything of it because it was a sucker so we let them have it before we got home they were both throwing up it was nasty. The older girls didn't get one because they were with there Dad on the other side of the road.I called the police to see what we should have done and she said that I was the 5 caller that day that there kids had a ate someting that made them sick. I told her that I could remember the neighborhood but couldn't remember the home. So we go to my parents the live in a houseing complex that they know everyone so we go there. plus other family members home. then we come home to have a little halloween party with Pizza and games.

I guess our town is too large to coordinate times and days for trick or treating. I've never heard of doing it on any day other than Halloween and no one specifies time. They start showing up around 5, we leave at 6 to do ours in the childrens' godmother's neighborhood, and we get home around 9 and the older kids come around until 11, which is curfew.
Most of the larger churches offer some kind of festival the same night but they are so crowded that we prefer to do it the old fashioned way. :)

By Wandilu on Thursday, October 14, 2004 - 10:38 pm:

our church has a fun night for the kids and grown-up's,too.they have games, food, and lots of fun things.

By Jackie on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 07:08 am:

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and we didnt have any specific trick or treating hrs. I remember that if Halloween was on a school day, we would come home, throw our books down and be on are way. We would come home for dinner, then go back out until around 8pm. Now if it fell on a weekend, it was like "JACKPOT" day, we literally went trick or treating all day long, and thats no lie. So when we first moved here, and I saw they had trick or treating hrs, I thought it was odd.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 02:37 pm:

I have always lived where trick or treating happened during specific hours set aside by the city! I just can't imagine kids coming to my door all day long!
