What does the inside of your vehicle look like??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: What does the inside of your vehicle look like??
By Trina~moderator on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 07:55 pm:

Just curious, as I couldn't believe how dirty the insides of peoples' cars were when I worked at a Car Seat Check today. We're not clean freaks by any means, but our vehicles look immaculate compared to cars I worked in today. I can understand dirt/sand/crackers, etc. from normal wear and tear but the TRASH floating around was just gross! Also lots of loose items that are potentially very dangerous during a crash. Yikes!

By Gammiejoan on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 08:03 pm:

I keep the inside of my van clean and neat. There are no loose items lying around at all. I do have a few things in the side pockets.

By Ilovetom on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 08:23 pm:

LOL. It's pretty clean *now*. Now that all my younguns are grown. I used to say - "I can't wait for ya'll to drive so I can trash your car".

Mirror mirror on the wall. I am my mother after all.

By Truestori on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 08:33 pm:

My car gets messy with paperwork etc. but I try to keep all trash cleaned out each time we exit the vehicle.

By Vicki on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 08:43 pm:

Mine is clean! I hate clutter in the car as much as in the house!! LOL

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 08:55 pm:

It's probably cleaner than my house right now! LOL

By Colette on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 09:19 pm:

Mine is clean. I try to vacuum it every week or two.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

Mine is actually spotless. I just had my carpets shampooed, its been washed and waxed and pretty much looks brand new. But I am always picking up trash and crumbs out of it keep it looking new.

By Kellyj on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 09:27 pm:

Right now mine is pretty clean...but only because DH took it to get cleaned out. :)

The exterior on the other hand looks awful! I had a flock of birds take off right into my car yesterday and now it's covered in bird excrement. One little bird got her wing caught in my windshield wiper. I had to stop at the mall to get her out. Thankfully her wing was okay.

By Mommyathome on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 09:40 pm:

Nearly spotless :) That's the way I like it!

By Jelygu on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 11:15 pm:

Generally clean, with a few papers and a little bit of grass in the floor.

By My2cuties on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 11:29 pm:

clean, clean, clean, inside and out. DH cannot stand a dirty car or house. There is never trash in it, but sometimes it does get extra clothes in the floor. oops.

By Yjja123 on Thursday, October 7, 2004 - 11:44 pm:

Clean. I am very particular about my vehicle. Kids can only drink bottled water in car. No sodas. I try to limit food in car too.
I hate seeing filthy cars especially brand new ones. I mean after you spend so much money it doesn't make sense to trash it. A friend of mine bought her car the same month I bought my suv. Her car literallly smells and the seats are stained! Yuck! It is only 5 months old and it looks like it is several years old.

By Paulas on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 02:12 am:

Cleaner since I read this post!

By Eve on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:07 am:

I wouldn't say our car is disgusting, but not super clean either. I always have something in our car! I have two outfits in ziplocks, a small pillow for DD, a roll of paper towels for car sickness, my umbrella, box of tissues, oh and some happy meal toy. I usually have a leftover coffee cup or water from the day before. There sometimes are shoes because DD always takes them off. I just brought in 2 pairs yesterday.

Have said all that, there are not fast food bags all over or anything, but it's definately not super clean.

By Marg on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:30 am:

You sound like me Eve.

I always carry extras for Alyssa, the child attracts mess:)

But otherwise, it is very clean, I try to clean it out once a week on Thursday or Friday. Flylady:) I always clean it out Thursday or Friday because the kids are homeschooled on Fridays and we don't use the vehicles much on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Just short trips to get the mail, go to church, etc.

By Bellajoe on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:49 am:

Right now it is nice and clean because i cleaned it out and vacuumed yesterday. It is usually not really a mess either, the most i have in it is the kids umbrellas in the pockets behind the front seats and my umbrella in the pocket of my door. There may be a water bottle from the day before too, but thats about it.

By Rayanne on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 08:27 am:

Right now it is clean. Chris cleans my car all thee time. The only things in mycar are a bokk and two dvd cases that are all Rylee's.

By Kernkate on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 08:35 am:

Mine is clean. DH is a clean freak when it comes to our cars. He cleans them both every Saturday.
My trunk has about 3 umbrella's, 2 folding chairs for soccer games and a soccer ball.
The car I am driving right now is my DS who is at college and the car has never been so clean!!

By Trina~moderator on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 08:59 am:

Glad to hear there are clean cars out there! :)

LOL, Paula!

Eve, that's normal stuff. I've been in your cars and they're NOTHING like what I saw yesterday. LOL! I'm talking lots of gross trash and tons of junk all over the floor. So much so that you couldn't even SEE the floor. One car looked like it hadn't been vacuumed for years. Ewww! My van never looked that bad, even at it's worst. Not to mention the fact that if I knew other people would see the interior I'd make an effort to clean it up. KWIM?

By Fraggle on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 09:32 am:

My caravan is pretty clean, but of course like Eve and Marg, we always have stuff in the car for emergencies. Since it is a caravan, there is not a trunk, so the carriage and the potty are usually in the back, too. Should I be securing these somehow?

By Conni on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 10:15 am:

I do clean out *trash* each time we pull in the garage. Kids are all told to *get their things and take them in* each time we get home.

I wash the exterior once a week (sometimes I go longer in the winter when the weather is bad or too cold obviously). I do vacuum out atleast 2-3x a month, just depends on the month. But I dont do it every week as I probably should.

We do have *stuff* in the van all the time like others mentioned above...
Right now is soccer/football season for my boys, so we keep 2 fold up chairs and a blanket in the back of the van (for watching practices and ball games). A first aid kit is in the back as well. Ds (4-1/2) has 2 folders he keeps in the back of my seat. One for preschool and the other is for his bible class on Wed nights. He also keeps a little bible in there too (he gets a treat if he remembers his bible--so he likes to just keep one in the van. lol) He also keeps a crib sheet in the van, so he can cover up with it when he gets cold or when he wants to sleep. Middle ds keeps his gameboy and whatever book he is reading in the back of the passenger seat and oldest ds keeps LEGOS in the storage compartment next to the back seats. I always have a LIST in the van for me to follow (lol!), my backpack with my school books are usually in the van, my purse and my MP3 player that I use at the gym. If we are traveling to Tulsa or somewhere I put our portable TV/DVD player in for the kids to watch. Oh of course we keep a flashlight, gloves, tire gauge, etc... and other safety items in the console...

My van is only 2 years old and I wish I could say it was spotless. :( But we have had drinks spilled on vacation, a mystery piece of candy stained a spot, etc...And thats WITH clear rubber mats *protecting* the foors. The leather seats are very easy to keep clean. But if I had it to do over again I would spend the extra money and have my floors scotch guarded!!!

Trina, I too am wondering now if I should have these larger items secured somehow?

By Trina~moderator on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 10:37 am:

Anything that's not soft and squishy (like a stuffed animal) should either be in the trunk, back of the van, in pockets/storage areas or secured somehow. Many SUVs and minivans have cargo hooks for that very purpose. Loose objects become dangerous projectiles during a crash. Common sense comes into play. Yesterday a mom had a screwdriver on the seat between her two kids. She seemed surprised when we told her that wasn't safe and moved it to the trunk. Argh!

By Bea on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 10:37 am:

I have a dear DH who is a neat freak when it comes to our vehicles. His Caddy is always spotless inside and out. He details my van about once a month. We are always careful about food and drinks in our vehicles. Except for sand on the mats, my van is usually very clean.

By Audreyj on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 11:35 am:

My car is pretty clean. We have a little habit when we get out of the car, I tell the kids, "get ALL your stuff, toys, books, whatever...and take it inside the house...." They are pretty good about it, so there's not a lot of pile up. AJ

By Eve on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 01:34 pm:

No one wants to fess up to a messy vehicle?? LOL! When I got in mine today, I picked up my trash. LOL!:)

By Trina~moderator on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 02:04 pm:

LOL, Eve! Well, I can honestly say my van usually looks better than my house. How's that for a fess up?! LOL!

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 02:29 pm:

Mine is dirty, needs to be vacuumed, but not full of trash. We try to throw away any trash a couple times a week at least. But my car is still pretty dirty, and driving me nuts. LOL

By Unschoolmom on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 03:28 pm:

Mine's clean at the moment but usually there are old french fries that have settled to the floor along with small toys, hairclips, chocolate bar wrappers, change and furtively removed socks. Above that are the water bottles, which get 5 cents at the local depot so at anytime we've got a small fortune in there. Above that are the sweaters or coats abandoned in warm weather. There's also always a bag of clothes from my daughter's latest overnighter at the GPs. The top layer consists of the bags the above mentioned french fries originally came in, stuffed animals, newspapers, junk mail and books, books and more books.

By Cocoabutter on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:26 pm:

I keep it pretty clean, but after we get home from a road trip (parents and in-laws live about an hour away) then I have to go thru and totally clean out the car- toys, trash, food, and everything.

The outside, though, that's never clean. :)

By Cakekisses324 on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:43 pm:

Mine is NOT clean. It is pretty messy actually. I have 2 cars, the one I use the most is my company vehicle. Its has alot of work related stuff..papers,supplies etc..
My other car is clean though:)

By Paulas on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

LOL EVE...I read this post...went out and cleaned it and then came back and posted about my clean van!

By Coopaveryben on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 10:59 pm:

I'll fess up...mines a mess. I try to vaccum it every week or so but that doesn't always work out. I let my kids eat in the car and if I lift their car seats up....there are crumbs. There are kid shoes, socks, school papers, toys, backpacks, soccer chairs, baseballs, etc. My car has always been this way, ever since I started driving but now I have a van and their is more room. I just told the kids today we need to clean out the car tommorrow.....you guys have guilted me into it with your clean cars.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, October 8, 2004 - 11:50 pm:

Finally, some people whose cars aren't that tidy! Maybe I'll clean mine out this weekend. there is some trash and it probably could get vacuumed. I have to work tomorrow morning and it depends what time I get done. Clinic is open from 8-12, but sometimes done around noon, sometimes done around 2pm! So, I might not care by afternoon what my car looks like.

By Kaye on Saturday, October 9, 2004 - 09:08 am:

Might currently is picked up, but far from clean. I will admit there are times that I have taken a garbage sack and a laundry basket to clean out my car. We live in my car sometimes, we have girl scout stuff, boy scout stuff, PTA stuff, baseball stuff, swimming stuff, etc, filled up in the car, because we have times that we don't run home. Oh and we eat in the car way too much. I keep a first aid kit, I keep a phone book, and a hurricane kit under the front seat of my van, so those are stuffed too. I once took my van camping with the gs, I had a gallon of blue drink that had a leak in it, well 2 hours later we get there, no blue drink, but the back of my van will never be the same. I blotted it up, when I got home I shampood it, but it was too late, it is the ugliest looking stain, looks like mold, but it isn't. So there is that, I win messy van awards! When I taught I loaded kids into their cars on the front porch, someone that had a child there had bought my old car, I thought I kept it messy, well not in comparison, there were cigarette butts and who knows what on the floor board...eww. I will say my van can get to be a huge mess, but I do attempt to clean it out once a week, not including vacumming though.
