Bed Wetting Question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Bed Wetting Question
By Tonya on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 - 03:01 pm:

I bet by the title yuu thought this was about a kid well guess what it is about me. I am 27 yrs old and don't know what to do. I sleep so hard I dream I am in the bathroom and I just go and usually once I have started it wakes me up but by then it is too late cause the bed is quite wet already. What do I do ladies. I cut out drinking later in the night like 8pm. I had these problems until I was in my early teens because I slept so hard it never woke me but this is crazy.

I cannot go to the Dr. because I do not have insurance and cannot afford another bill right now so any advice would be greatful. I am at the point right now where until it is under control I think I am going to start wearing a pad to bed at night to keep me from having to wash sheets every night when I get home.

So you had the problem until your early teens and it went away and is now back? Do I understand that right? How long has it been going on this time? Having the baby could have something to do with it.

I had the problem until I was 12-13 and it went away and I will say there are nights that I wake up and have to run to the restroom or else but here in the last month it has gotten to the point where I wet the bed. I went to the Dr for it when I was youngr and they tried the sheets that ring and my parents use to get me up in the middle of the night to go and that helped but I am one who is going going going all day and at night I am out when I hit the bed.
I don't know what to do.

Tonya I know you have been under an large amount os stress, could that be the problem?
Are you having any other symptoms of a UTI?
I wet the bed when I am pregnant with a boy, that is how I know I am pregnant.

Like Emily7, some of my first thoughts are stress and some type of infection. I know that you don't have insurance right now, but if it is something that needs to be treated and you don't treat it, you are going to have much larger medical bills from a hospital stay than from calling a doctor. I really think this is serious enough to warrant a call into the dr at the least. I have never heard of a dr charging for a call!! Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Just as a warning - physicians *are* now able to charge for phone calls. I know it sounds ludicrous, but it's being done. I work in the medical community, and while I don't know any personally who do, I do know it's being done in some practices.

Other than seeing a doctor, which I really think is necessary, you could wear something like Depends at night. At the very least, a maxi pad would help absorb fluid. As mentioned, it could have to do with child birth. A friend of mine once told me she needed a special procedure done on her urethra that stopped leaking and bed wetting. Sorry, I don't remember the details.

Well you know you should see a dr, but I also understand why you can't right now. My son had this issue, nothing was phycially wrong with him, he just sometimes woke up wet. He went for a couple of years dry and then having accidents. I will say that for him it is almost always linked to be sick, it usually happens right before he gets sick. However this is what our pediatric urologist said, absolutely avoid the four c's, caffine, citrus, carbonation and chocolate. Make sure you limit drinks after 6 PM, really no more than a couple of ounces when you brush your teeth and no other. These two things alone made a big difference for us. What they said with my son is nothing is wrong with him, but when you are sleeping when your bladder is full it tells you by spasming, these spasms should wake you, but if you spend your whole day ignoring them then at night your body has a hard time adjusting. So make sure you go to the bathroom often, also avoiding those c's help get rid of the smaller spasms. Good luck.

Try wearing the Depends at night and set your alarm for a few hours into the night so you can get up comfortably to pee.
Try an OTC med for a UTI before you call a DR. It won't hurt and may save you a buck. Good luck!

well try strengthening the pc muscles, but then again you have to be awake to tighten them. If loose muscles are a problem then kegels or ben-wa balls will work great.

I also wet the bed once a long time ago when I was drunk and did the same thing- I dreamed I had to go pee and dh said (in dream) "Well, GO!"

I remember I was told to do those exercises when I was PG, and I didn't, and now sometimes when I sneeze, I squirt at the same time! I wouldnt know I had to go pee otherwise!

Seriously, I would definitely say you are under stress from going and going and going all day (I hope all those goings aren't just to the potty!) Anyway, when I get stressed, as do many gals, my immune system wears down and I get sick. You may be prone to an infection of some sort. If it is bacterial, and doesn't get treated, it could be life-threatening.

But I would start by cutting down on your stress and activity. If you can take a nap somehow during the day, you won't be so dead tired at night. Find a way to slow down.

Good luck!
